I'm heading to Alaska in 11 days. My daughter told me to pack lots of layers. Right now it's 8 below, high winds and about 3 to 4 feet of snow where she is. She said the locals are excited I'm coming and they are planning on showing me all the sights.

Starting out to be a good year.

A week ago my daughter told me she wasn't renewing her contract and she was moving back home in May. And now I just got home from work and checked my email to find out I won a CD this month. How cool is that!! And seeing what CD it is, I'm going to have to make sure my daughter doesn't find out. It might come up missing once she returns home from Alaska.

Thank you
I can hardly wait to hear it.

Note the wind speed and the temp. Right know it's 4:30PM in Bethel and the windchill is around -34*F.
I would feel better if she were closer to home.

I don't have the words to tell you all how proud I am of Mandy. Even with all the obstacles she has proven herself time and again. She has now outlasted some of the new teachers she started with this year. Right now she is fighting a cold...she is susceptible to respiratory illness do to time spent on a ventlator at birth.

stoirmeil...thanks for the information on Erik Erikson. I've done some searches and I am interested in finding out more. This is something my daughter will like to look into.

CR...I have done some gettin-away. Right after Mandy arrived in Alaska I went to Canada for a weeklong tent camping trip, just to clear my head. One month ago I also went on a wilderness canoe trip with two of my brothers. 6 days over 40 miles in with a canoe and a tent. I'll post some pictures soon.

Thanks for all your prayers and well wishes for my daughter.

maggie....I plan on sending her peanut butter, cheese and crackers to suppliment the protien. She is planning on trying some local dishes (maybe)!! laugh.gif

Rindy....I'll try to be better with my updates. I am keeping very busy. I'm still involved in another forum that's for Michigan Geocachers. I am writing a small feature section in a Michigan nature magazine and next month is Prematurity Awareness Month so I've been writing politicians and news people hoping to bring attention to it.

j Padraig moore....She has a one year contract with the school but if she can't handle it they will let her go. They've already lost several teachers since school started.
I hope all the best for your son. Sometimes it feels so good to just be "plain".

Talking to my daughter this morning and she was excited. She had a breakthrough with one of her students and she didn't realize it until she was talking with other teachers at an inservice yesterday. Seems she has a new student who just moved to the "big" town from one of the small villages. His English was poor and as Mandy talked to him she asked if he could understand her English. He said it was hard. She asked him to help her with learning Yup'ik and she would help him with English. Working to help her has helped him understand the school work for his other classes. She is the only teacher this student has had a conversation with.

Also at the inservice teachers came from many of the small villages. They told Mandy she was sooooo lucky living where she did. They were most excited to have flush toilets for the day. And they couldn't imagine three grocery stores to choose from!!!

Hey all....I know I haven't posted much since my daughter flew to Alaska. Though I lurk through here almost daily I haven't stopped long enough to post anything.

My daughter arrived in Bethel and after only one week she was realizing just how far away she was. Cost of living is VERY, VERY expensive so she is counting her pennies. She's been careful enough she bought a kitten for company. Now she has someone to come home to at night. She is teaching 7th and 8th grade children who are at a low 3rd grade learning level. Most are Fetal Alcohol Syndrome kids. There are no water or sewer lines to the house she rents so a truck comes by weekly. She has found out in a pinch she can make her water stretch two weeks. Many of the locals live on whale, walrus and seal meat. Also bear, moose, caribou and salmon are available. Over 90% of the residents are Native Alaskan (Yup'ik....pronounced you pick). The whale is way out of her budget and the walrus meat is called "hairy potatoes" by the locals because of its appearance. She said she won't be eating any of that. Most meat in the store is costly and very close to the expiration date on packages and she said it looks bad. Recently she went to the store just after fresh stew meat was put on the shelf. But Reindeer Stew didn't sound that good to her. There are some roads around town (about 20 miles worth) but none of them are paved. It's rained almost daily since she has arrived so the roads are mud and ruts. She has fallen numerous times and most of her clothes are muddy. A few weeks ago there was a major storm over her area. The winds were so high that no planes could land at the airport for several days. That meant no mail, no supplies, no way in or out.

As for me.....I'm a nervous wreck!!

I dropped my daughter off at Detroit Metro Airport for her 5:00pm flight. She called me from Chicago during her layover. We talked through most off it. Now she'll call me sometime around 3:30am from Anchorage. An 8 hour layover there and then the last flight to Bethel. I just checked the weather for Bethel and it says "SMOKE" sad.gif Wild fires on the tundra.

I feel so old right now rip_1.gif

Well my daughter flies to Alaska on Aug 3rd. She is very excited and looking forward to this adventure.....I think it will be quite a shock for her though. I talked to her earlier tonight and she couldn't wait to tell me about her new Alaska digs. She is renting a whole house, bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, fully furnished with a washer and dryer. The sewer and water trucks come by once a week to empty and fill the tanks accordingly. If the pipes are frozen when the trucks come the landlord will thaw them with a propane torch (pipes are all above ground). Right now the landlords whole family is in the hospital getting their tonsils removed. They've all had a lot of sore throats. All this for only $950.00 a month......oh yeah...the house......it's 20'x20'. unsure.gif

Getin-away-that is so neat about your daughters job offer. I lived in Anchorage, Alaska. My brother was born there. It is a beautiful state. My girlfriend went to Bethel in 1980 and stayed for about 3 years. It was a real culture shock for her.
She was shocked at the alcohol and drug use in the area. I have often wanted to go back and I have looked into working as a nurse with the Indian health Service but I couldn't talk my husband into going.

I know my daughter is excited about going, but I'm have some reservations. She was born three months premature and has Cerebral Palsy. Since she started college, every winter has been very difficult for her. The colder the weather gets the less mobile she becomes (stiffness and sore muscles) and she fights colds thru the winter months. She had surgery on her leg last December that left her in a full leg brace because her knee is to weak to support her weight. To put herself in this position she is quite literally risking her health. She wants to be a positive role model but risking herself to do that doesn't seem right. I'm doing my best to be supportive but it sure is difficult.

Well I haven't posted much lately and I haven't posted here at all. Sometimes between my day job and my volunteer one I could used two or three clones (or clowns, not sure which would work better)!!!

Anyway, I need a place to ramble a little. If any of you remember me talking about my daughter and all we have been through well....there's more. She graduated college in May wearing a full leg brace on here left leg left from her surgery last December. Her leg is not as strong as was hoped for, but that hasn't slowed here down. She has been offered a Special Education Teaching job and she is strongly considering it. The only catch is that we live in Flushing, Michigan and the job is in Bethel Alaska.....3309.9 miles away!!! It is a small Yup'ik Eskimo village surrounded by smaller villages. Though the town only has a couple of roads in it and a few people own cars, there is no road to it. To get anything to town you have to either bring it by ship or fly it in. She would be located on the banks of a large river just 25 miles from the Bering Sea. Bethel is located 400 west of Anchorage. In the area are children who are deaf and some who are in wheelchairs. Can you imagine a wheelchair on the tundra? Some of the disabilities are caused by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Drinking is a major problem in the area. Mandy having lived her whole life with Cerebral Palsy feels she could be a positive influence in this community.

Right now I'm just a little numb.

I was just reading an article on geochaching sounds like it might be fun does it take a special gps?

Nope no special GPS unit needed. I started out with the basic Garmin unit I used for hiking and canoeing. I have since upgraded to a full mapping Garmin, basically anything that you can input a waypoint will work. We see everything being used. A lot of great people from all walks of life are enjoying Geocaching. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you get started.

It's 84*F right now and the humidity is a killer sweatdrop.gif. Very, very cloudy....looks like it could rain any minute. Supposed to continue through Thursday than turn sunny. Vacation starts Friday so that's good (even though I love a good thunderstorm). Going to go north and visit my parents for about 11 days. Do a little kayaking with my da (who's going to be 79 this year). I am also trying to get into shape for an upcoming backpacking trip. Carrying the loaded backpack in neighborhood parks sure gets some funny looks. My da will be walking with me while I'm visiting them (though he said he's done carrying a pack laugh.gif).

This sounds like a lot of fun. Does your campsite have to follow the medievel theme or can you use basic camping gear? Will you have a vehicle nearby, if so this will be very easy for you.

Since you will be in a tent make sure you have some type of pad under your sleeping bag. You will feel better in the morning.

With that many people around you shouldn't have to worry about four legged animals. Are you planning on cooking over a fire or using a stove. A stove will be much easier and quicker after a long day. You should try not to take food into the tent. Keep it away from where you sleep. A tarp set up near the tent is nice also.

In the woods will be nice, you will want to get out of the sun some. But check the trees over your tent for weak or dead limbs. These can be dangerous in the wind.

Bring some type of chair. Sitting on the ground can get rough after a while.

With this many people present there should be a water source, but you should make sure.

If anyone has any allergies make sure they bring what they need. (I'm allergic to bee stings so I always carry an Epipen just in case.)

These are just a few basics. If you need more information let me know.

OK... I need more information. What type of camping are you going to do? Tent, RV.....wilderness or campground? Car camping, backpacking? You will want to plan for the type of camping you are doing. I'd be glad to set you up with a checklist for whatever type of camping you are doing. Send me a PM. As your expedition date gets closer start watching the weather in the area you'll be in. You want to be prepared for anything, but not so prepared you are bogged down with gear.

One thing though....it's all a state of mind. If you are prepared mentally a stormy day is just as incredible as a sunny day. I've taken some newbies on wilderness trips before. The first day is the worst. After you conquer this you can handle anything.

I also have a wide range of hobbies and interests though anything that gets me outside is at the top of my list. I am a camper, canoer, kayaker with wilderness camping being my favorite. In August I will be joining a small group and we are flying by float plane to the west end of Isle Royale for a week of backpacking. The plane drops us off by Windigo and we will loop around the western part of the island and return to be picked.

In September I will join my brothers For a week of wilderness canoe/camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

Right now I am the Secretary of the Michigan Geocaching Organization (MiGO). We are part of an international high-tec hide and seek game called Geocaching and it is played using a computer and a GPSr. The local newspaper is doing a full page story on Geocaching and I have been working with the outdoor reporter on this. We are setting up a series of Geocaches to highlight the attractions in our community.

I am also an avid Bird Watcher and a budding nature photographer. And in my spare time I have a day job.

Does anyone else work for a company where there is a philosophy of "screw up - move up"? I've seen my company take people that either couldn't do their job, or did it so poorly, that in order to get them out of their job they PROMOTE them. That way they don't have to worry about performing poorly: they instead rely on their underlings to do their job for them.

Is McDonald's still hiring?

Yeah I do!!! The US Post Office. I'm the main window clerk at my office. The part time window help I had today is also the guy that is the boss on Saturday's. He made a comment that he couldn't understand why the Gov't recognizes Christmas as a holiday and gives us a day off, but not Easter. When I said that it was because Easter always falls on a Sunday, he corrected me in front of a lobby full of people by stating "Easter always falls on a different day of the week every year." He went on to say he knew this because some years it arrives right after his birthday. I guess Good Friday this year is on Thursday. dontgetit.gif

Hey Rose

Camping out in the snow is awesome. We do have a heater but we only use it for about a half hour to warm the tent up before we turn in for the night. After that we just rely on our camping gear. Waking up to several inches of fresh snow on the ground is unbelievable. At the south end of the canyon in the last picture is a river with two very primitive campsites near it. This past weekend we saw a group of ice climbers camped there while they climbed the nearby waterfalls. These are public sites so I'm thinking next winter of taking the train from Sault Ste Marie Ontario north to the 112 mile marker. That gets me right by the campsites and a short showshoe to the canyon.

I hear Oregon is beautiful!! There are some wonderful hiking trails I have recently read about in the wilderness areas out there. I hear the coast is also spectacular. That should be a great trip!!

My daughter is doing OK. Her surgery didn't have the results she hoped for. Her ankle and hip are very weak and she has been fitted with a full leg brace to help her stand and walk. At the same time she continued her student teaching, working with high school special education students while using a walker and an amigo(an electric scooter) to get around.
