I just have to express that my favorite CD is from Barrdas called "Barddas!" They are truly terrific musicians and vocalists! Is very hard to pick out my very favorite songs on the CD. They are all very lively, upbeat and really makes you feel like you are back in the 18th century when this kind of music was probably played and celebrated! However, my personal favorite is the song called, "The Conjuring" as I love Celtic instrumentals. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves Celtic music! I anxiously await their new CD!

Favorite One CD? That is likely picking a favorite child. rolleyes.gif

Right now, it's Not Enough Shouting by Wolfstone walkman.gif

Ooh! I love Wolfstone too! I don't have that CD you mentioned. I have "Almost an Island." I hope I got that right unsure.gif I love their music, but a friend of mine insists that they broke up a long time ago and I see no indication of that, have any of you? I sure hope not!

Picking one favorite Celtic CD?? Why don't you ask me to talk about your age or weight while I'm at it. Losing battle either way. Soo so very many excellent CDs. I've started thinking of the following answer to the question:

Oh, I could not resist! There has to be one CD that is your favorite at this time and play over and over! wink.gif laugh.gif

Been bouncing all over the place
Just got in
Moya Brennan: two Horisons
Schooner Fare: Day of the Clipper
Schooner Fare: Alive!
Smoky Finish: Clear This Planey . . . Immediately

have been playing those, as well as Rise, Posing as Human... Was playing some Altan earlier while talking to you via PM, was cranking Great Big Sea this morning, and recently downloaded (because I can't find it to purchase) Silly Wizard: Live Wizardry. Drove in to work tonight listening to a Gordon Lightfoot cassette.

The new cd by Solas is one of my favorites also Wolfstones w/ Tall ships is another great cd. I like the fact that Solas is doing americana folk music with an Irish twist really killer stuff. I am a guitarist that ha played with some famous Blues Musicians and have discovered iriish Trad last year and have been learning it with the same fervor that I had when I was a kid hearing albert King for the firsttime back in the late 60's.
I am here in Phoenix Arizona which has a great Irish music scene here and a wonderful culteral center that has tons of activities.
If anyone out there know Solas tell them the Bluzman says "right On!" we are listening........very closely.
I am interested in corresponding with Irish Trad players

Moya Brennan: two Horisons

this is my big favorite
however, there're 2 things I don't like
1. used too much computerized sound
2. sound control, the sound is compressed too much
when listening "harpsong", too much rumbling due to excessive compressing

Posted by: mingkee 18-Jul-2004, 08:34 PM
Clannad: Anam and Banba
they're my all-time-favorite
Moya Brennan has excellent voice, and sounds very touching

Mark Knophler: Local Hero
this is another all-time-favorite
and thanks highlanderradio, that unlocked the mystery of "whistle theme"
love it very well

Chieftains: Tears of the Stone
I never heard Sinead O'Connor has that beautiful voice
"Factory Girl" is excellent

4 Loreena McKennitt albums (Parallel Dream, The Visit, The Mask and the Mirror, The Book of Secrets)
no doubt, McKennitt is a good, versatile signer-song writer
and her music mixed with some South Asian/Middle Eastern feeling, that's ultimate

Moya Brennan: Two Horizons
she made her angelic voice
however, this is not on the top
bad sound editing ruined everything

Emerald Rose: Celtic Cresent
this is a collection of 2 (Bending Tradition and Fire in Your Head)
guitar+whistle make the magic!
"Hill of America" reflects American Dream
"Star of the County Down" is very unique, different from any other versions)

(1/2 Celtic) Gerry Rafferty: North and South
this is a mix of Celtic and Pop
however, "Shipyard Town" is 100% Celtic, along with "North and South"
the bagpipe made up everything

www.celticradio.net

I have several favorite Celtic CDs
on the other hand, I buy it once I like it (dled mp3s)
I have over 40 Celtic CDs, and I like them all
it's IMPOSSIBLE to pick up the best

Posted by: Fearchara 19-Jul-2004, 10:42 AM
I agree...it's difficult to chose one Celtic cd as a favorite. It's a good question, though, makes me stop to think about it but my favorite changes quite often, with my moods, haha...and then I hear a new song on here that I really like.

Posted by: CelticRose 19-Jul-2004, 05:44 PM
yes, I must admit that it is very difficult to pick just one, but thought there was just one that you were listening to more than than any other right now, eh?

I have been listening to Barrdas more than any other, but I also listen to Wicked Tinkers, Wolfstone, Loreena McKinnett and many others as well.

Posted by: mingkee 20-Jul-2004, 05:31 PM
if the listener is REALLY responsible
then the one will surely buy a CD once liked dled mp3s
for me, I bought some CDs after I found I like the dled mp3s

this shows that I like the mp3, and support the singer/writer

Boy! Am I ever having a hard time. I just received my three Twinflame CDs today! Wow! I am even more impressed with how talented these two musicians are! I got "Peaceful Warriors, Journey of Souls and In the River! They are all wonderful CDs! Right now I am their biggest fan! smile.gif

REMOVED OFFENSIVE POST

I can dl the stream
but use this way ONLY for offline listening (e.g. subway), and delete it after listening
there're several CDs I ordered after I'd listened here
once I like it, I buy it

that's it

My favorite cd's are all of the ones by Celtic Soul. I bought them at a local Celtic shop and at their live performances (those are autographed). And I like Aine Minogue, I have Celtic Moon. Since I've been listening to Celtic Radio, I like Noiseful Joy and The Brobdingnagian Bards.

Barddas! I have been spelling your name wrong all this time..........please forgive my stupidity!

well my current favorite CD is "In the River" by Twinflame! I love every song on there but my faves are Safe and Warm, In the River, Timeless, Lifelines, Arrows, Keepers of the Flame and Surrender! wonderful CD!

My favourite cd of the moment would have to be Ar Mhuin na Muice by ehrm, myself. Well it cost me 20,000 big ones, so I'd better bleedin' like it, innit? Luckily, the reviewers seem to like it too. "Bewitching" is what Hotpress Magazine in Dublin wrote.

If you'd like to listen for yourself, please visit my website: http://www.brid.at. You can also have a look at my "Cd Grand Tally"
(remember savekaryn.com?).

Thanks for reading!

Hi Brid! I checked out your website. Anyway to listen to samples of your music?

Posted by: Aaediwen 13-Aug-2004, 04:20 AM
The sound link on her site smile.gif Think I'll sample some smile.gif

nice smile.gif I perticularly like
"Bídeach na gCarad" and "Green Grows the Laurel". I think I'll like "Caidé sin don tsé sin?" as well, but I've got to either turn up the volume to load it into a wav editor and increase the level on it first, so I can hear it better smile.gif

ok smile.gif May have another CD for my to-buy list smile.gif Still deciding, but promising smile.gif I like what I hear in the samples. "Caidé sin don tsé sin?" is a little weak on balancing the vocals, but I guess that's permissable for a demo recording. Sounds like it's got a good rythem to it. And I do like the vocals. Just think they should be brought to the front a bit more smile.gif

I really like David Arkenstone's Celtic CD's. I like the new age sound he adds to the music.

Thanks! I'm glad you like them. The demo version of "Caidé sin don tsé sin?" in my samples is very badly mixed. It was recorded with Antonio Breschi (really worth checking out www.ethnicpiano.com) and unfortunately we let Antonio too close to the mixing table! rolleyes.gif laugh.gif The melody on the demo is the most common melody sung to this song. I recorded the song on my cd to another tune and with only bodhrán accompaniment. The melody I used is a very rare one brought to light by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan and recorded on their album "Runaway Sunday".

Cool smile.gif Something wants to say you just made my to-buy list smile.gif Now just for the next time I have things streight enough to see how much I can spend on CDs/DVD's

The Rankin Family's first 3 cds are prime - The Rankin Family
Fare Thee Well
North Country
I also love Capercaillie's Sidewaulk cd and Altan's Harvest Storm is great.

Finally, a must have is the Barra MacNeil's Christmas cd. It may sound weird to recommend a Christmas cd in this poll, but anyone who has heard it will know what I am talking about - from the kicking instrumentals to the deeply moving carols in Gaelic and English. It rocks!

I love older Seven Nations. I just discovered Clann An Drumma at the Glasgow,Ky games. They are great! Also like Loreena McKennitt, especially Book of Secrets. I've got to agree. Choosing one is impossible note.gif

I most definitely agree with the older Seven Nations stuff. Actually, I like their newer stuff as well, but it's a different sound: much less Celtic.

My favorite Celtic CD is Big Dog by Seven Nations, and a close second is Rain and Thunder, also by Seven Nations.

For the person who heard that Wolfstone has broken up, that's not true. I heard them for the first time this past Labor Day weekend and thoroughly enjoyed them. I look forward to getting a few of their CD's (hopefully) in the near future.

Celtic Rose, as others have said, you ask a hard thing.

Lately I've been enjoying (apart from Highlander Radio) Karen Matheson (Capercaille), Dochas (my son brought the CD back from Scotland), and Mark Saul (first heard here, CD on order.

My alltime favorite Celtic CDs are the CDs that you can find in random stands in stores like Walmart or something like that. I buy them all, my favorites are Celtic Nights, Celtic Dance, Bagpipes, and Celtic Sounds. I love them!

My sister makes a lot of mix CDs and I have about three of them and it's all a bunch of different irish folk songs. Those are really good too.

Also, recently my older sister and two of my younger brothers and sisters put an album together. Gwen played guitar, Steph and Anna sang, Becket plated banjo and guitar, and Andrew played tin whistle and recorder. I was asked to be in the band but I didn't have time. I was taking summer school and working. So it's kind of a bummer that I am not on the album but oh well. I sent one of my whistle to Andrew and whole bunch of music and instructions and since he knew recorder he was able to pick up the whistle pretty fast, so I guess you can say that that was my contribution to the album. Anyway, my point is is that I really like that CD too. Maybe I'll get Gwen's permission to give a copy of it to Macfive and maybe it can be on the playlist. Who knows.

Hi Chris! Thank you for the word on Wolfstone! A friend of mine still swears they broke up several years ago, but you are the second person I know who has seen them in concert within the two months! Thank you for telling me so I have ammunition now to convince her it is just not true and yippee! As I love that band!

Posted by: sir_tal 15-Sep-2004, 12:51 PM
You are more than welcome. They should have a website out there...

Here we are. According to the all-knowing Google, their website is http://www.wolfstone.co.uk. And I have been there in the past, but it seems to be down at the moment. I would wait until you're sure it's up before trying to use it as ammunition to prove they're still together. smile.gif

Chris, I have seen that website of Wolfstone before and used it as ammunition before, but it helps that others have seen them in concert recently. This is my very favorite band which is why it is such an issue for me! rolleyes.gif
