ok, so here I am, listening to the feature artist, Rise, and I'm just wondering what on earth makes this group a Celtic group? Does anyone know? Their music certainly in no way sounds Celtic. Please educate me.

They may not sound Celtic at first glance, but the roots are there. The subject matter is very Celtic. Cold Glencoe is an extrapolation on "Massacre of Glencoe".
"Time and Tide" and "I will Love you Always" tell a heart wrenching story of two lovers pulled away forst by duty then by arranged marrage. Both common stories found in Celtic music and poetry.

"The Gallows" tells a story of what has been risked by so many in their fight for freedom.

There are other examples as well that I think make Rise a fitting band for Highlander Radio. They retell some of the same stories as in the traditional songs, but in a completely new way.

For more on the Celtic nature of Rise, the review at Celtic Cafe Review is worth a look. You may also want to take a look at Rise's Homepage.

I can see the Celtic link. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I just don't care for their music. To each his own, right? smile.gif

Agreed. Rise is one of my favorites, while I can't stand much of the current more popular music.

Love Rise. I just love them. A few weeks ago I caught a whole album of them on Highlander Radio, and I was so struck with it all (even their cover of "Imagine," which I would't have said would be any strong way to end the CD, but there it is.)

I guess the cut that stands out is Cold Glencoe, since it's more traditional even though it's original. The arrangement is impressive, but it's the song itself that just puts the chill right up your back. As many ballads and performances as you've heard about the incident, none of them attempt the point of view this one does. Just sung bare naked with only the bodhran it would come over as stunning.

Well. Yes. I guess I am a fan. thumbs_up.gif

I ordered their most recent as soon as I heard a song from it here on Highlander Radio. A very personable group, who send out occasional emails to their listeners.

This apparently is where everyone's gonna start throwing tomatoes at me... laugh.gif

I am *not* a fan of Rise.

I just don't like the sound of their singer's voice, and a lot of their music sounds...well, unpolished to me. Hey, that's just me. Hasn't induced me to turn off this station to date. smile.gif

I find their music very engaging, but I am an unabashedly fanatical fan of Scottish folk, especially revival folk. biggrin.gif

Note just arrived from Kris:

We wanted to thank you for helping make POSING AS HUMAN - the 37th most played album in 2004 on the DJL - an amazing position for an indy band from a tiny Scottish island - thank you very much to all of you at Highlander - it certainly made our year!

I have to agree that Rise is definitely a wonderful group, and they do in fact have Celtic roots! Listened to a couple of songs today over at Aaediwen's that I had heard before but when he played them back-to-back revealed a very sad story...I have to say, what a group!!!
