Well, I thought the best place to look for help would be in this forum, so here goes!

We are working on a heraldry database that contains alot of family information. We have plenty of reference material on Scottish surnames, but we are having a difficult time locating any reference material, books, encloypedias on Surnames for English, Welsh and Irish.

What we are looking for are books that have family history, coat of arms, mottos, etc. for the English, Welsh and Irish.

We do have 2 reference books for the Irish, but still not as in depth as I would like to see.

If you have any suggestions or links to places we could purchase these type of books it would be much appreciated!

Maybe if you try visiting the www.houseofnames.com? Me, myself has been thaught the art of creating coat of arms, and I use to find this site quite good - although, if you want to see the coat of arms, you have to pay - but still you can read about a names history for free!

This is the only place I can think of to put this question...I am looking for a crest or some such for the name of Colter... I have found the name in the northern part of Ireland spelled that way and in Scotland in the spelling of Coulter. However my son wants a shirt with a family crest and I don't know where to look. I'll try the site of houseofnames.com as you suggested Eiric but if anyone else has some suggestions...I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks for any help you can offer!!

I've only done research on the Scots, but along the way I have run into a couple of references to the Irish. Electricscotland.com has a few pages devoted to the Irish, including this one that has crests for some families. You'll have to check into the legalities of providing the crests on your own. wink.gif
http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/scotsirish/index.htm
Ninety Irish surnames are listed there, as well as a link to an online book that claims to list 1,000 Scottish and Irish names.
The information is rather sparse, usually no more than a few paragraphs but better than nothing. As Electric Scotland states, the Irish aren't their focus but you cannot provide a comprehensive history of Scotland without mentioning Ireland.
