I know not all people are easily confused as I but several people are using duplicate Avatar's to identify themselves with...

There are 17 different catagories under the Avatar collection and it would seem that we have plenty to choose from.

I personally as other's have told me they responded to a posting thinking it was one person and then when they got a strange come back after their post they went back and looked up the name and then realized that the picture was not the person they thought it was...it was the same Avatar used but different name...

I know I use the picture as a way of recognizing who I'm talking to and I think others do to...

So If you see you are using a picture that someone else has been using, please consider changing your Avatar to another...it gets really confusing for me and other's on the network...

We won't throw a fit if you decide not to change, but everyone here is so special I know I don't want to get you confused with someone else...so please consider helping keep this simple minded redhead straight...

I knew there was a reason I always liked pictures in the books...read?...there are words there?

As a fellow red head wink.gif , I have to agree.....it would be nice to limit the pics to one person each. I tend to look at the pics and associate them with a person. On one discussion board I was on, once you picked an avatar, that avatar was listed as 'taken' and frozen so no one else could take it.....maybe that could work here. I know for the pic I use, I mentioned to Paul how I admired the pic and asked if I could use it for an avatar. He then added it to the list. It's not that I'm upset to see others using it.... I guess I kind of see avatars like our signatures, something personal reflecting the person. Just some thoughts. smile.gif

Posted by: Aaediwen 14-Nov-2003, 02:39 AM
I add my vote. It can be quite confusing when multiple people use the same avatar. Mine is my own, taken from the cover art on my book, because I wanted to be sure that I had a unique avatar that noone else could take. I know I identify someone by the avatar before I do the name when I'm reading the boards.

Posted by: oldraven 14-Nov-2003, 09:22 AM
I've seen this problem. Seems there are two Elspeths out there. tongue.gif And that's not the only instance.

I use my own, as you can see. Something that identifies me, because it was made by me. It's really not that hard to do. Get your hands on a copy of Photo Shop and go to town. smile.gif

Posted by: myriad 14-Nov-2003, 09:47 AM
wow, I didn't even think to look at names. I even got a name wrong and the picture was different. I hope changing mine doesn't confuse people too much. I am pretty happy with the one I have.. so I will leave it alone. Thanks for the note on practicing safe avatar. lol

Posted by: bhalilama 14-Nov-2003, 12:11 PM
sad.gif I didn't realize I was sharing an avatar. I'm going to change . I will post back under the new one. (Just like anything else you don't realize that it is you until you get caught)

Annebelle,is anyone else using this avatar?I'm not savy enough to replace it with one of my own.If you or oldraven or Richard can 'walk me thru it' I will try.I plan to take a course next season. Talking about being a airhead!!!

I think you are ok. I haven't seen another like it.

Posted by: Herrerano 14-Nov-2003, 01:27 PM
Golly, hope I don't confuse folks too much since I change my avatar quite frequently. But then I am fairly easy to identify anyway since no one else has the Galicia flag and nifty crown thingy that is prominently displayed below my avatar.

Leo, who has somewhat of a short attention span and bores easily. cool.gif

I didn't pick my Avatar...the girls that work for me did. They thought I should use a picture that looked most like me... so I'm announcing that this Avatar is officiallly taken now...I origionally wanted to use one that was goofy. More like Gollum. Fits my personality..never thought of myself as a beauty...more the beast!

God broke the mold when he made me, so now the Avatar is taken too...crack slam boom!

Now the Avatar is broken too..

Maybe Mac should fix the system to where once you pick a avatar no one else can come in later and pick the same one. Would stop the duplicates.

Hey Dreamer Girl,
Where have you been? Let me know how you are doing! What's new?

I go to the Dr tomorrow...ankles are still really swollen...I am getting around better but I stay on my feet way too much...

I try to stay off my feet as much as possible on Sat afternoon and Sunday which is my only down time...
Ice paks and heat tubs are my best friends....Dr will put me on physical therapy starting this week...now the fun begins...

What makes me really sick is I had a week all planned to spend every night last week at the gym lifting weights and running scheduled...all of my girlfriends were going to meet me there...had a friend scheduled to meet me there every night last week...til the accident put a squash on my plans...I'll be better soon and I'll get back there asap!

Dreamer do you ever wonder why you are saying "Calgon take me away"

I always had a hard time with work and then the schedule you just told me about yourself, trying to make dinner for everyone...and finding time to eat. Usually everyone would tell me they couldn't eat before working out, makes them sick...my whole family was in that stuff in Baltimore...

Now that I'm into Fencing and Swords, they look at me like I'm crazy..I use to have everyone say "why don't you do martial arts with your family?" I got so sick of hearing it....cause I don't want to alright? Have you ever felt this way?

When I'm practicing with Swords my kids would stare at me like I'm weird. Now they stare at me trying to decide between them who's taking me to the Emergency Room this time...Haven't cut hands ever...

Hopefully you'll get a minute to spend on yourself...be good!

Annabelle

Posted by: Dreamer1 16-Nov-2003, 01:17 PM
OOOH, someone who understands!!

Annabelle, you're absolutely on target about the whole eating-before-class thing. Dinner is spaced around them all.

Do you know, last year I seriously considered taking Fencing classes here but two things held me back. Most importantly, I'm afraid I'd really hurt someone! The other is a lack of Time, and how best to spend it. I love to watch Fencing and Swordplay, though. It's exciting, and can also be very beautiful in the movements. I have to hand it to you for taking it up, WOW!!!
thumbs_up.gif thumbs_up.gif Get back to it asap. Sure wish I could watch you!

Dreamer there were times that by the time kids got done with Martial Arts in the evenings and driving back to Annapolis from Baltimore we would stop and get something to eat at a Hamburger place...made me wonder if kids eating that late at night was any better for them...and then we'd get home and I'd head them to bath and then bed...god forgive them if they had homework too.

It brings back memories here! Good days are here for you! Remember this converstion in years ahead...these are really good times. Even as hectic as they are right now...I do miss them terribly...and I miss the kids...all in college and not here now...boo hoo! No one to skateboard with, pooie!

Posted by: Annabelle 16-Nov-2003, 06:00 PM
Tartangirl that's exactly why I didn't pick the Avatar for myself...I let the people who work with me pick it...if I'd done it I would have gone for goofy...but they didn't like the ones I picked...they though it should show what you look like...I thought it should represent your personality...

That's me, class clown!

Annabelle,

We do the hamburger stint, too, when my husband teaches his evening class. The girls bring their homework along and do it after we've eaten. At first we got some strange looks from people, but lately I've seen several families doing the same thing. We all smile at each other-it just makes things so much easier sometimes! If the girls are really quick, and don't have any problems to work out, then we may have time to head to the Mall for windowshopping before picking my husband up after class. It's become a sort of girls' night for us.

I'm sorry that yours are all away now. sad.gif Are they near enough to come home on weekends sometimes? Remind them of those days and see if they understand how precious time together is. What are their interests now? What are they all studying? I know it goes fast! Sometimes I wonder, if we had the power to slow their childhood down so that they stayed children and didn't change, would we do it? It's so hard to watch them grow up in such a hurry, knowing all the responsibility, etc, that's just waiting around the corner for them. Would you do it?
(Think of Tuck Everlasting).

Ah well. I've got to get mine heading to bed.
Take care!

I thought that my Avatar should represent my personality and I was fortunate enough to be able to include the ones I love. My wife took the picture and Leopold is as close to a child (the meow boy) as we have besides our poodle. Besides that I do have the same hair color even if mine comes out of a bottle rolleyes.gif and we do bear a family resemblence. tongue.gif after all I was raised by cats.

Sis, you need to start the program I started a couple of years ago...

On the day before my birthday I start asking people to do alot...every time they say, he it's not your birthday yet...I always tell them, no it's not : it's the official DAY BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY!

THEN YOU KNOW YOU ALWAYS GET THE ROYAL TREATMENT ON YOUR BIRTHDAY...

then the next day your family demotes you down to page again and I still keep asking my family to do stuff and they always say: HEY, IT'S NOT YOUR BIRTHDAY ANY MORE.

I always tell them no it's not, you are right: BUT IT'S THE OFFICIAL, DAY AFTER MY BIRTHDAY....

9 Flags
33 Fun Stuff
2 Highland Games
1 Medival
25 Movies
6 Music
21 Princess
30 Scenes
4 Seasonal
11 Star Trek

I'm not relinquishing my Elspeth avatar, but thought it would be fun for today to invert my age. Yep, 24, not 42. Don't worry, I'll return to normal with the stroke of midnight and turn back into a pumpkin.

Lady Elspeth,

You may be looking at age from the wrong angle. There are alternatives to thinking about age. For example, last month I celebrated my 6th annual 40th birthday. Less painful this way. It also helps if you deceid not to keep up with your age!

PS What ist the propocol about using names, sereen names, etc? Is their one?

Hey Single Speed,

I keep writing my actual age to convince myself I am actually that old! biggrin.gif
I really don't pay much attention to numbers, my forte is concepts. So, birthdays are a tme to make myself remember my chronological age, in case anyone asks me. laugh.gif In my head I'm kinda timeless. Older than I was but hopefully not as old as I will be. There is still too much to learn and discover.

As to protocol, who knows? It seems to go with the individual. If someone signs their posts with a name, then I use that, if not I use their screen name. Or if I don't know someone I use their screen name. If I've witness them surviving a night in the chatroom with Annabelle, then it's onto first name basis! cool.gif

Are you talking about the Highland games? I took Nikki to the Highland games with me a few weeks ago in Tucson. He loved all the attention he got. There were other Scottish doggies there too! I really love the Sheltie breed. They have the most expressive faces. You can almost read their minds. Very loyal and noble dogs!

celticrose, Are Scottish Terriers expensive?

Annabelle

Hi Annabelle! Um......Scottish Terriers as in Scotty dogs? I would expect so about $300-500 for one. My dogs are Shelties aka Sheltland Sheepdogs originally bred in the Sheltland Islands off Scotland. They are very expensive and run about $300-500! However, I only take rescue Shelties now, which means they are given to me for free to a good home. Had four of these barking guys at one time! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! It was pretty noisy at my house back then. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 25-Nov-2003, 10:31 PM
Celtic Rose, I'm sorry to be such a bother but I'm learning here so please bear with me.
Are the Shetland Sheepdogs the ones that they use to bring in the sheep and are trained to move animals?

I think I've seen them demonstrated at the Scottish Festivals but I'm not sure.
Thanks for being the teacher here.

I've seen Scottish Terriers before but finding a breeder seems to be really hard to find...where would I find one? Check on the internet? Call SPCA? Open to ideas..
Happy Thanksgiving All

Posted by: oldraven 26-Nov-2003, 11:26 AM
Check the net Annabelle. Purebred breeders are pricey though. You should also check into what kind of manners the dog has, and if that matches your lifestyle. A lot of Terriers are in constant need of a task, and are a ball of energy all the time. They're far higher maintenance than bigger dogs and can take a lot out of you. Check it out first. smile.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 26-Nov-2003, 01:07 PM
Annabelle! No bother at all! Anyway I can help would be glad to. OldRaven is right though. Check the internet. You know I said between $300-500, but they could probably run for more money than that. I know of someone who just bought a Sheltie for $500. The breeders can really jack up the prices on their dogs, so be careful. I would check the net.

I love Scotty dogs (Scottish terriers) . I have several books on dogs when I was doing so many dog portraits, I bought them. The one dog book I have talks about the personality of Scotties and it says the following that may help you:

They make good house dogs, are great guard dogs and can bite. Good with children. Good outdoors or indoors. Can go anywhere and do anything. It is a very sensitive to criticism and praise and should be trained gently. Couragous and undaunted by the face of danger. Well-loved companion dog. Plays well with children, barks little, has a watchful nature in regards to the house. Should be taken for long walks frequently. His hair needs stripping at least twice a year and frequent brushing for its good looks to be fully appreciated.

And to answer your question about Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties). Yes, they are the ones that are used to bring in sheep and cattle. They are herding dogs and like Scotties, you always see them at Scottish festivals. Westies are Scottish dogs too and very good dogs too. If you want to know about them, I can tell you. Just ask! Hope all this helps! smile.gif

OldRaven -- I forgot to ask you what breed of dog is yours? Is he/she still a pup?

Posted by: Raven 26-Nov-2003, 02:00 PM
We got our Tiny toy poodle as a rescue. She is also a special needs poodle (abusive background and a thyroid disorder) We found her on the internet and I think we paid $300 (incidentaly expense) our previous dog (which we lost in Feb after 12 years,,,sigh sad.gif ) I think we paid $500 for brand new in the box laugh.gif

Considering what they give back I don't really think any of our dogs have been expensive.

Rose, she's a purebred German Shepheard and yes still a pup. She's 16 months and not yet full grown, but still a very large dog. She's a pup because she still acts like one. When playing she'll run at you like a bullet train, thinking she's just a VW Bug. We named her Buffy, the Kitty Slayer. After the greatest TV show that ever existed.

dry.gif stop laughing.

We got her at six weeks and she's been the perfect dog........once we broke her stuborness. I've got some pics of her in the Art thread. biggrin.gif

Nice pic, Richard!

I am envious!! I own a repro Bess, and would love to get my greedy little mits on an original. wink.gif

By the way, the Brown Bess was usually smooth bore, and in .75 cal. The barrel length varied from 46 inches for a first model (ca 1750) to 42 inches for a second model (ca 1775) to 36 inches for a third model (ca 1805).

I use to do some re-enactments in my younger days too.

BTW, The Brown Bess was not mine but a Friend of mine. It was given to me on loan during the shoot.

The avatar discussion is actually a good topic. As I am new here I am learning people by their pics, some names, but mostly pics. When I found the site and decided I wanted to join, I looked through the avatars, then scanned through some of the threads. I looked around to see what pics were taken and tried not to pic one that was in use. I hope I didn't take someones pic. Please let me know and I will change it right away. I feel it is only fair if someone was here first that I should change mine.

I also agree that possibly 'blocking' the access to the use of the pic after it has been chosen is a good idea. Can it be done?

Take care

I still have to laugh everytime I think about my g-grandparents walking down the street in Shrule together. Patrick, being 6'7" and 300 lbs and Honora, barely 4'11' and petite. Must have been quite the site.

At 1800 with my grandfather and hit another brick wall. Not sure what to do now. Did you use the websites to do your tree or did you buy one of those family tree software packages?

ASE, I like that =) I will get all the old photos from my Grandma's, we have alot of Sepia photographs, especially from my mothers family. One of her Ggrandfathers brought home a girl from Sicily and she was so beautiful.. She had really beautiful black hair and brown eyes, they said.
I think I would like to walk around in the 19th century for one day or so, seeing how so many things around me developed...

Posted by: A Shrule Egan 07-Dec-2003, 06:13 PM
Fortunately, we have a lot of old letters and pictures but I still needed to hit many web pages and piece a lot of the puzzle together. Didn't hurt, that I was able to track down some of my relatives in Shrule, after 27 years of searching for them. They helped with a lot of the missing pieces. Still missing a great deal of info but we have 9 generations and have I received many compliments from others on some of the genealogy pages of how much I have together. We only go back as far as 1793. Haven't found anything before that.

Keep looking on every web page you can find and leave as much info as you can on the genealogy pages. You just never know who may have some info that can help you out.

Hope Paul starts up the genealogy page soon. That should be fun for everyone.

I know for certain that within that time there is alot of different Europeans, North Africans and even a Japanese is found. But that's basically it. My family's history is quite an interesting one, being seafarers through out (okay, a few black sheep were allowed wink.gif ).

CelticRose, Family Tree maker is a very good software program for geneology study...it's also user friendly...you can also sign up for updates to the program. My husband and I have used it for both of our family research . I have it on my lap top that I take to the library and I have XP also. You'll really like the program.

My cousin started all of this on Family Tree Maker a few years ago. Unfortunately, she passed away a few months ago at age 48 from smoking. I was given the program and took over adding things to it. I still haven't figured out how to do everything on the program but it sure makes things easy. Guess I should really sit down and read the instructions and use it properly.

I'm still a novice with computers but I haven't had any problem figuring out what needed to be done on Family Tree Maker. Very user friendly.

BTW, my cousin had XP on her computer, so I know Family Tree Maker works with it.

I apologize to you visual types for changing my Avatar, but the woman in the one I had was getting on my nerves.

So, I'm trying out this one for a while. There was another I liked too, so I might just shift around for a bit. Guess I'm feeling restless.

I have a number of them in reserve for myself, but am still content with the cat picture. I have thought about using the one after I freaked out and pulled the trigger, but then better sense has prevailed. (just kidding)

At least for the duration of the cruise (or until the Tullamore runs out!). The Lustful Wanderer is heading up the East Coast to Canada to pick up Oldaraven, then we are off to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. Ireland first, to pick up more Tully.

Hey Maisky and Eamon I'll tell you where you went wrong. First you offer her a glass of tea and be sure to put the lemon in it and while you are in the galley put a good shot of bourbon or scotch in there. She'll start singing old family tunes. And you load her onto the ship when she start's singing "I'm a roving gal, named Sal!

Now I asked you first, you never said how much you'd pay for her. I expect more per pound than you'd pay for fish. I've got to come up with a good Excuse for Mom why she's not around. Oh well, I'll worry about that later. Don't fret guys get the nets and scale out and we will have to start a negotation for her. You've got to make it worth my getting in trouble for now. I'll tell our big brother Richard she's taken an extended holiday...

Well I tried. But look how cute our Avatars would be together. Me with my Wode, you with your naughty bits....

Talk about your beauty and the beast!

Down Eamon!

Remember, Venus was a goddess with the power to turn impudent men into a lovesick frog with nary a princess in sight.

Just enjoy her face and refrain from thoughts of all else.

Elspeth! I love your new avatar! I loved the very first one too, but I know there comes a time when we need a change. This is very nice. I can visualize her standing by the edge of the ship sailing in the wind and her mind swirling with thoughts of the past with hope for a new future. Sigh....

I thought you'd like this one. What a nice way of putting what is in her head. I liked the depth of expression I read in her eyes.

I like it much better only seeing her face than I do in the entire painting. Botticelli just seemed to have given her a form that didn't go with the face, and was more a female-ized man than a woman. tongue.gif

A, its kind of a Love/Hate relationship. I meet a nice redhead, fall in love, and then they carve my heart out with a dull pair of kitchen shears, stomple all over it, fill it with oatmeal and nasty bits, roast it over an open fire, then hand it back to me. Then they usually date my friends. biggrin.gif Have I learned my lesson? What lesson!

Eamon, Not all of us are like that.

Some of us are very sensitive, affectionate and love a man utmostly. The man is always our "Champion". So don't stero type us, not fair. Now most of us do have a temper. When pushed, we push back. But when it comes to the relationship with the man of our choice, he is the "ultimate".

Now our enemies we roast their hearts and serve them up for dessert. Sometime with a little ice cream on the side.
