The Welsh In Pennsylvania

I came across this information in my research. It includes a couple of website links. If anyone has any other information on the Welsh who immigrated I'd love to hear it.


Morgan John Rhys...set up the Cambrian Company, and on 1st October 1796 he purchased under mortgage for £9,450 from the noted Dr. Benjamin Rush forty-three named tracts in Pennsylvania, on the waters of the Blacklick and the Connemaugh, a total of 17,400 acres situated nearly 250 miles west of Philadelphia and 80 miles from Pittsburgh.

Perhaps the first significant settlement in Pennsylvania of the second wave of Welsh immigration was founded in 1796 in present Cambria County. Under the leadership of the Rev. Morgan J. Rees (or Rhys) (1760?1804), a Welsh Baptist minister, a group of Welsh immigrants began the present town of Ebensburg and populated the surrounding area. Cambria County owes its name to these immigrants, who named their general settlement in that area after their former home, which was in the mountainous region of Wales. As late as 1873, the Welsh were still the largest ethnic group in Ebensburg and in Cambria Township. Over these years Baptist Church services in the area were conducted in the Welsh language.

Here are two links to information regarding the Penn Welsh Baptists as they left Penn to settle in the Pee Dee region of SC and also in NC. I'm fairly certain my SC Welsh ancestors were associated with this community relocating from Penn or possibly from Delaware.

I live on Welsh Run Road just up the way from "Welsh Run" ( the stream ) and the "Robert Kennedy ( not the presidents brother ) Church in "Welsh Run".

This is all in Franklin County, PA.

There's a little Welsh church in PA near the Maryland line which still has some services and classes in Welsh - link:

There were quite a few Welsh immigrants to the Ohio and WV areas too, working in the mines and such. In the town of Rio Grande OH near the OH/WV border there's Rio Grande University which offers courses in Welsh. There's alot of ancestry in that area. There's also an area in Vermont, Poultney I believe, where alot of Welsh immigrants settled.
