Not sure where this one comes from but all the ingredients are world wide and those of you that feed children know how difficult it can be at times!!!

Recipe Name: EGG IN THE NEST Category: 18TH CENTURY Serves: 1
1 Slice of bread 1 Large egg 2 Slice bacon
Fry the bacon in your skillet. Meanwhile cut or tear out a circle (I use a biscuit cutter) in the center of the bread. When the bacon is done remove it from the pan and place the bread in the pan. Crack the egg into the hole you created in the bread. Place the cut out portion in the pan to toast. Fry egg to your liking, turn over the cut out portion to brown the other side. The egg and bread can either be turned for a few seconds or left as sunny side up. Serve with the bacon.
For some reason kids love this simple breakfast....might be the name

"TOAD IN THE HOLE" Contains sausage and other ingredients not in this recipe... Catriona has a recipe for " Toad In the Hole" posted here that is like the one I have , but this is not it!
As is in everything , regions have names for things that might not be the same in other regions.
Do not close your mind nor pallete to things you might think you know, experiment, and try different things.

We called this egg in the hole when I was a kid. My mom made this all the time. I've tried, but I can't ever make it right. My egg white is still runny, but the toast is burnt. I'm normaly a great cook (at least thats what my husband tells me), but the littlest things I can't ever get right.

ah, i didn't know this existed. i was reading the dreaming jewels by Theodore sturgeon, which mentioned "carnival eggs"--eggs fried in the center of a slice of bread, the centre of which has been punched out w/ a water glass. i can't really cook, but for some reason i can make these...i've been eating them steadily all summer. they're good w/ some seasoned salt or a bit o' taco sauce. at least, they are to me. perhaps i'm strange. i'll have to try it w/ bacon.
