Hey Gang

I thought since only a handful get involved in our politics forum this might be better placed here.

As some of you may know recently the new National Do Not Call List came under attack by the courts saying this is protected speech because it is not equal (other groups can still call you) but all this is is telephone harrassment which is illegal not protected speech. So here is what I propose. In the past I have used airhorns the type you can buy at Walmart in their boat section and when a telemarketer calls blast them out. Enough blasting and they'll stop calling you. If the courts will not let us request these criminals to stop then we have to take actgion into our own hands and this is the next best solution and the next best deterant.

So lets all get our horns ready. toot.gif

And thanks Paul that's the perfect smilie. thumbs_up.gif

That is a great idea!

Posted by: scottish2 01-Oct-2003, 08:45 AM
yeah figure if they want to harrass us we'll harrass them sort of fight fire with fire. Obviously the courts have decided they want to allow the telemarketers to make harrassing phone calls so this is our use of our free speech.

If you like this suggest it to all your friends soon enough we'll replace the 50 million on the do not call list with 50 million air horns blasting the telemarketers ears off. toot.gif toot.gif toot.gif

Great Idea. But the telemarketing call i have been recieving are all pre recorded messages...

Posted by: scottish2 01-Oct-2003, 12:51 PM
Anyway to leave a message or talk to someone after taped message if so play it through once then blast them out. toot.gif toot.gif toot.gif

Unfortunately, the guy on the other end of the phone is usually some poor sod trying to make a living, just like you and me. He doesn't deserve to have his ear blasted any more than we do. Now, if there was a way to airhorn his BOSS..... toot.gif toot.gif I have caller ID and an answering machine, and I just don't interact with them.

Posted by: scottish2 01-Oct-2003, 07:36 PM
I look at it this way he/she knows his/her job is extremely unpopulor yet they chose to still do it. There are plenty of decent jobs out there and they chose the one that harrasses their neighbors. SO I have no problem with this. toot.gif toot.gif toot.gif toot.gif toot.gif

I agree fully, Dave. thumbs_up.gif beer_mug.gif

Posted by: scottish2 02-Oct-2003, 04:27 AM
It still amazes me though that this judge would rule that telephone harrassment is protected speech just because the law is unequal. Yes I agree it is and the other groups (Cherities and political groups) need to be added to this do not call list but telling these telemarketers they can continue to harrass us is unbelievable!!! censored.gif

Posted by: Laxchief 02-Oct-2003, 10:31 AM
Two issues:

1) Air horns won't do much to a taped message;

2) They could, however, cause genuine harm to a live person at the other end. Hearing is a fragile thing and can be badly harmed by even one single exposure to noise.

And, no, this can't be justified by saying "Well, they shouldn't have taken that job in the first place."

Using the air horn will only cause grief to that one individual caller. It will not stop the next guy from that company from calling you and will not stop anyone else. In other words, it has no more effect than simply hanging up, which is a lot easier to do, causes no physical harm, does not require reaching for anything during the call and requires no additional expense.

Posted by: RavenWing 02-Oct-2003, 11:12 AM
i still like the ar horn idea. I wish I had one last night. A person with a very thick accent I could barely understand called up asking for someone who didn't even live here. When I told them no, they have the wrong number they insisted on verifying the number, which was correct. They then asked if they could talk to the person who owns the place and I said "Not if you are selling anything". They couldn't come up with an answer so I hung up.

Posted by: scottish2 02-Oct-2003, 12:49 PM
To me telemarketers are no better then common criminals because they use harrassment by phone as their weapon of choice. And an airhorn I will gladdly pay the price for and after enough word gets around that people are using such tactics the calls will have to subside. It may take one at a time but across the country those 1 at a time will add up. And as I said to me these are no better then common crimianls invading my right to privacy so I could careless what happens to them. censored.gif censored.gif censored.gif

Now for a solution to the idiotic SPAMMERS!!!! censored.gif censored.gif

I guess I have a lot of patience, probably why I like fishing so much. When I get those telemarketers using the prerecordings. I wait until they give a number to call, which is usually an 800 number or push a certain number. I wait and comply to their request. When I do get a live person the first thing I do is ask for their Supervisor and inform them that I recorded the name of the Company and or telephone number, and if they call back, I would sue for harassment. I have learn a little patience talking on the telephone to service reps. since my wife is one. BUT SHE IS NOT INVOLVED IN TELEMARKETING OF ANY KIND. She can stand them either.

I called my Congressman about this last year and he gave me an address I could be put on a DO NOT CALL and DO NOT MAIL. I still have it if anyone is interested.

But I would really like to use the HORN BLASTER. What a lovely idea.

Posted by: scottish2 03-Oct-2003, 01:45 PM
Yeah I use to use the supervisor approach as well but got tired of then having to listen to that toad tell me how it was going to take them like 30+ days to remove me from the list which is BS they just delete my file end of subject yet would have to spend another 10 minutes talking to that toad about how they were going to take aso long to comply with a simple request. AT & T did this to me several times and for al I know I am still on their list of those to call. So took a solution my dad took up years ago is simple and definately effecdtive especially if others join in. Eventually they will be calling horn blasters and be forced to stop calling and basically comply with the Do Not Call List.

I'll be honest with you...I'm disgusted with the legal system in this country when it comes to the discussion about peoples RIGHT's!
If you maintain your right's and it infringes on someone elses, we just get a lawyer...just so we can have our say.
Then it comes down to who is the best paid lawyer to defend either's rights...somewhere along the way we forget that we all have to live together in this country...try to live your life and make yourself happy without hurting some one else would be nice...
I'm sick of hearing about people's rights...people that argue over that need to get busy and be productive instead of sitting on their back sides.
It always reminds me of the person who has the chip on their shoulder who walks up to you and says"knock it off".
Ok, next time they want you to knock it off - knock em out instead, quick, fast and in a hurry. Then run like you know what!
People who work just want to go home and relax after a busy day.

I had a telemarketer call me one night to ask me to change to another phone company. She started on her spill and I said"excuse me what's your first name"?
Well that threw them completely off guard. The woman told me her name. I said "Patti do you like what you are doing?" See told me "not really" but she had been with the company 5 years. I told her then stop doing it and hung up.
2 month's later Patti called me again...she asked did I remember her calling about my phone line, I said yes. She said she had taken my advice. She had gone to her supervisor and told her she did not want to be in that dept anymore. So they moved her to billing... she called to thank me...
I was very surprised!
Next time someone calls, ask them "Wow you must really like your job right?
If they say no, tell them to do something about it.

Not going to get to much into this here as we have a politics forum but just wanted to reply what I hope will be quickly.

If you want to understand better why the courts don't really care about to many of your rights anymore read this page I did it explains the reasoning behind a lot of their actions.

http://www.geocities.com/libertarian4life2001/Military.html

And to see more about why they don't care about the Constitution as yourself a couple questions relating to income taxation. First if you still have it get your 1040 instructions if not here is a copy from the IRS http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf Note if you're on dial up this will take a few minutes to load full document as it is adobe PDF and is 126 pages long once loaded skip down to PG 75 and take a few minutes to read the Disclosure, Privacy Act, and Paperwork Reduction Act Notice. You note how they bury this in the middle where most people won't ever find and read it? Now note how is is basically a reading of your rights. First Paragraph alone they clearly state and I quote

QUOTE
We must also tell you what could happen if we do not receive it and whether your response is voluntary, required to obtain a benefit, or mandatory under the law.

Then later they clear state several time in the center column that you can be charged criminally. The Supreme Court has already ruled that you don't have to be guilty of any crime to exercise your rights.

So now that you have a little background on this try these questions.

1. How can you file a tax return and not have to waive your 4rth amendment right to privacy? To tell the government to stay out of your private and personal business?

2. And how can you file a tax return and not waive your 5th amendment right to not be a witness against yourself a wittness in this case in the form of your own paperworked force out of you by the government?

Notice how the government never mentions these things to you?

And amazingly enough the courts don't bother to enforce your rights over the governments limited powers.

OK off my soap box.

First, I'd like to say that we've enrolled in both the national DoNotCall and the Indiana DoNotCall lists. And, I am an ex-Customer Service Manager ('70s). Today's telemarketing is crude and rude;today's telemarketing efforts are obviously scripted, and the activity is time-sensitive, i.e., the spiel should take no more than xx seconds, and the customer's comment will be either A or B, and here is your response to A or B (see 'Overcoming Objections' in your 'How to Be a Salesperson' manual. tongue.gif ) With that in mind, the telemarketing caller cannot spend more than so many minutes on the phone call.
My suggestion (vs. the air horns, which may deafen you as badly as the caller!
unsure.gif ) is to ask the telemarketing caller, "Could you wait for a moment, please?"
Then you lay the phone down for several minutes angel_not.gif . VERY few telemarketers will still be on the line after 2-3 minutes wait. rolleyes.gif If they are still on the line after that time, you can simply pick up the phone, quickly say, "Sorry, not interested." ... and disconnect!
That's my tuppence.

Something that works and after a few times will get you off the list is to tell the caller that you might be interested but ar busy at the moment and ask for there home number so that you can call them back. They usually hang up immediately and never call back.
I am currently on the Colorado no-call list and have been for about a year and it works pretty well until some judge decides it violates free speech and throws it out. If that happens I do believe that I will exercise my free speech in a matter that wouldn't be appropriate for this site if I start getting the calls again. When I was getting junk calls, the most irritating though were those that had nobody on the line when you picked up the phone. Used to get several of those ever evening. They stopped when our no call law went into effect.

Another way to solve this if you don't like the horn idea is when you get the calls just start acting like your mentally insane and screaming your head off. LOL laugh.gif tongue.gif

I've tried that. They still want me to switch my long distance provider, remodel my house, refinance the mortgage to a lower interest rate, and subscribe to some pile of crap magazine biggrin.gif !!!

well you could always keep that old airhorn ready for the real persistant annoyances. wink.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 06-Oct-2003, 09:23 PM
tongue.gif Here is the easiest thing to say when a telemarketer calls:

"I've just been laid-off, does that matter?"

Most will just hang up on you!

Posted by: Madweasel 07-Oct-2003, 03:40 PM
I did an odd thing to a telemarketer once... before the days when I could afford the whole caller-ID thing.

Poor slob calls to sell me a subscription to a newspaper I already get. I was ticked at this - second call in three days from this paper, and why don't they check their own frickin' databases?!

So I did the only thing a self-respecting looney can do in a situation like this: I interrupted the guy before he could start his schpiel, ordered a pizza from the moron, and hung up.

Posted by: scottish2 07-Oct-2003, 03:54 PM
You should have told him you want to cancel your subscription and see what he says then LOL laugh.gif

Posted by: Madweasel 07-Oct-2003, 04:37 PM
LOL... had the paper been available online at the time, I probably would have. As it was, I needed to keep on top of the important things: my sports teams. wink.gif

When I finally did let the subscription lapse, I got all kinds of junk calls and mail about it - it let up after I moved to a new apt., so it all ended well, anyway.

Now I just screen all calls that come in - if it's someone who needs to talk to me, they have the sense to start talking into the machine, giving me an opportunity to pick up.

That's because the majority of telemarketers calls are made automatically by a computer. If you answer and the computer has dialed but there is not an actual person to bug you, you get the silence. Their computers are actually dialing and making connections too fast for the workers to keep up.
As far as stopping the calls, the no-call lists are an excellent way. If you are able to, getting your number UN-listed also works. Other than the no-call list, another great way to stop the calls is to put a fraud alert your credit through the three major credit bureaus. This also stops all junk mail, including the pre=approved credit cards that everyone gets in the mail at least 3 to 4 times a week. Those are some of the most dangerous pieces of mail that is sent out due to the fact that they are tailor-made for Identity Theft. If anyone is interested in knowing more, just ask. I can either post it in another forum or you can e-mail me. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Richard Bercot 09-Oct-2003, 12:04 AM
Ranger,

I hate to tell you this, but an UN-list phone number does not stop computer generated Telemarketer calls. The computer kicks out your prefix number and starts at 0000 and runs through 9999.

I used to be unlisted and I still got call, when I asked them how they got my number they would tell me the computer dialed it that they no idea who they was talking to.

Like you I have the address and 1-800 numbers to stop the pre-approved credit cards, mortgage companies and other financial companies along with Telemarketer calls.

Posted by: ranger 09-Oct-2003, 12:16 AM
I didn't say that the un-listed number would stop them, but it helps because your number is now off of the national list.
If you have a fraud alert than that's great. If you don't, I suggest getting it. Everyone should. The post was for those that don't or have questions about it. I investigate identity Theft for a living and you would be suprised at the amount of people who are totally clueless as to the steps you can take to prevent identity theft and how easy it is to become a victim.
