I would just by a high quality sauce for a base (with a minimum of added sugar) and fry some good ground sausage (add other things that you like such as mushrooms, fresh chopped garlic etc) Add all the ingredients then simmer together to get the flavor through out the sauce and it should taste very good.
One note - do not go overboard with any one ingredient, remember less is more.
Good Luck

Red wine always helps a tomato sauce. Also adding additional herbs, like basil, or oregeno.
The way I do it is- Take a teaspoon worth of herb in m'hand. Rub both hands together with herbs inbetween. What this does is get the aromatics of the herb (oils) working. And will flavor your sauce with more intensity. Because the oils have been 'released'. Do this above your pot of sauce and let the now crushed herbs fall into the sauce. And I agree less is more. Because you can always add to it. Once it's in, it's in.

Start with 2 cans of tomato sauce. Add a dash of oregano and basil. Stir in 1/2 lb. of ground beef. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar. Cook for 15 min. Add 1 cup sugar.

If my sauce is thin and don't have enough time to simmer it down, I add a little cheese. Romano or Parmesan is best, but I've use cubes of cheddar. Once the cheese melts, the sauce is improved.
