One of my favorite Celtic Bands of all time! Sad to see them end. Talented musicians whose live shows were full of energy and so entertaining.

"It’s the end of an era stretching back three decades and 45 Commodore Ballroom appearances: Spirit of the West is playing its final three shows at the Vancouver landmark Thursday through Saturday.

The band, formed in 1983 by John Mann, Geoffrey Kelly and J. Knutson, has gone through many members over the years and faced its share of hardships but kept at it and became one of Canada’s favourite Celtic-tinged rock acts.

On Saturday evening (4/17/16), the band will perform for the last time at the Commodore Ballroom to a sold-out crowd, citing lead guitarist John Mann’s health struggles as the reason for their departure.

Mann was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 51.

"It's been hard, since Johnny's got a serious struggle ahead of him, being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's,” said guitarist Geoffrey Kelly. “That’s really going to change the trajectory of things, hence these farewell concerts.”

“The time has come to go out on a good note,” Kelly said on Thursday. “We wanted to call it while we were still certain that we were giving our best show at the level of consistency we have always strived for."
