Found this book in and antique shop. Myths and Folk-Lore of Ireland, Jeremiah Curtin, Weathervane Books, New York 1890.

It has some very interesting and unusual Irish stories passed down through the generations.
I found a web page that has chapter by chapter copy that can be read or printed out.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/mfli/

After reading a few of the stories, come back and give your thoughts on the stories or what you think the lessons to be learned.

This web page also has other older Celtic books (various topics) that can be read on-line.

sacred-texts rocks! it caused me to cancel some plans for my website. I found it when looking for information on the goddess, Rhiannon. And I found there the complete text of the Mabinogion. My studies keep returning to this site, including my last quest to truthfully quote Emerald Rose... "I know the reason why way out of season, Lleu slew the wren with the stone."

Actually he used an arrow. But that reason is in the Mabinogion, as is at least one complete story about Arianrhod. I encountered some sites saying that this story is the only one to survive about Arianrhod, but I suspect that there is more somewhere. Maybe this is all, but there seem to be some things about the goddess Arianrhod, that are not well covered in this one story. maybe I missed those aspects though...

I just read, "The Three Daughters of King O'Hara." What we do for love's sake! Very interesting story. I hope to read some of the others before long. Thanks for posting the website.

A few days ago, Aaediwen and I were discussing some of these stories on the forum chat. One thing that we have found with these stories and many other Celtic Myths is the constant presence of the number 3. Meaning, that there is always 3 of something, 3 days, 3 giants, 3 princes, 3 sisters, 3 golden eggs, etc. Neither one of us could put our finger on the significance of this in all of these Celtic myths.

Does anyone have an explanation or ideas as to why?

A Shrule Egan, that is something to dig into and ponder upon. Very interesting indeed!

I've been pondering this for a year or so now... and it's not just in Celtic lore either. Religon and Geometry carry this as well. the Christian Trinity, the rule of 3, the archetectual strength in form of the Euclidian Equillateral triangle... and there are more and more examples. Most anything else I keep running into like this has some greater meaning in the world... What does this mean?? Diffrent context all the time, but it's always in some key spot.

Fair, Brown and Trembling...It seems that the youngest daughter is always disliked by her older sisters. Once again, love conquers all!

Aaediwen, you have answered your own question in your question

You cited "The Christian Trinity" in one of your examples...

Father, Son, Holy Spirit

3 in 1

All things happen in 3's..

I personally think its all superstition, but my elders tell me its all to do with the Holy Trinity. Hope this helps.

Maybe it's simply a matter that the devine works in triplicate and this is an angle that has beem missed by most who notice the side effects of it (all the sightings of the number 3), but perhaps the root is simply devine prefrence for the number three which does unnoticed. A possible answer I guess.
