There are lots of activities to do at a Celtic Festival/Highland Games. Tell us your favorite activity and let us know about your most enjoyable time at a festival or any unusual stories! |

Well, let's see... Massed Bands - Having both perspectives from (sober and not so sober), it always stirs emotions. Having two other perspectives (participant and spectator (in both cases sober and not so sober)), it is equally stirring. Highland Dancing - Love to watch but I have to say that some of the dance moms and teachers are worse than hockey parents. Heavy Athletics - Always a favourite (notice the Canadian flavo"u"r to that word) Clan Tents - For the first time this summer, there was actually a representative of the clan MacPherson so I was actually interested for the first time. Concerts - When we can actually pull away from our tent, this is great. The proximity of our booth to the stage at the Fergus Highland Games allows us to catch the main stage entertainment. This year, John Allan Cameron and the Cottars played. Once, we actually closed and packed up early so that we could catch Solas playing. Vendors - Love checking out the stands but most festivals allow too much junk vendors in. Whiskey Tasting - Glasses are never big enough. Men in Kilts - Not my cup of tea. Women in Kilts - This isn't the Pub is it?!? |

I can only talk of Metal Festivals but the things I love most is: Camping Atmosphere and tons of ppl that like the same stuff as you do! |
Posted by: TracieE 26-Sep-2003, 12:54 PM |
Just love them men in Kelts. I enjoy the other stuff but a man in a kelt is just to sexy. |
Posted by: scottish2 26-Sep-2003, 01:22 PM |
ah to use a marketing phrase (I think leggs pantyhose) Nothing beats a Great Pair of Leggs. And to not get confused in my case refering to female legs, just to make that perfectly clear as mud. |

Only been to one so far, last year in Ligonier, PA but it was awesome. I voted for men in kilts out of consistency, but what I really loved was the concert. Clann An Drumma played and it opened my ears to an entirely new musical form. They were great! Then again I loved the heavy athletic as well. Whoever came up with those contests had to be a wee bit nuts. Part of the fascination. |
Posted by: Elspeth 26-Sep-2003, 04:30 PM |
oops.... wasn't done. We did experience an interesting phenomenon that I wonder if anyone else has experience. We could actually still hear the strains of bagpipes for days afterwards...... |
Posted by: Gaelic Bread 26-Sep-2003, 06:29 PM |
Men in kilts... women in kilts... children in kilts... dogs in kilts... get the idea?! Tell the truth, it's even more fun running the USAKilts Store at the things. The friends that we make, and the people who just hang around to gab and have a good time make the whole thing worth it! |
Posted by: Macfive 26-Sep-2003, 06:33 PM |
I agree, you hear bagpipes for days later...even in your sleep. The most unusual thing I saw happening at a Highland Games was actually at the Dancing. The girls dress fell off during her dance!!! She was actually very good about it, she would dance, it would fall off, she would pull it up, she would dance! |

Well don't leave us in suspense Paul did she win? |

Hmmmmmmmm.......... |
Posted by: scottish2 26-Sep-2003, 09:13 PM |
Just wanted to make sure it was clear as I saw another post that had a similar comment. |
Posted by: Catriona 27-Sep-2003, 06:06 AM |
MacFive Just to show that I read all your posts very closely...... Whiskey with an 'e' is Irish, Whisky without an 'e' is Scottish... |
Posted by: Annabelle 27-Sep-2003, 09:46 AM |
Even though I love the concert, men in kilts are really No1! Pretty legs! So how come when women don't shave their legs ours are not as pretty, and we are certainly not as hairy, well most of us anyway. |
Posted by: MDF3530 27-Sep-2003, 04:33 PM |
I voted for the heavy athletics. Just to be different. |
Posted by: scottish2 27-Sep-2003, 04:40 PM
Traitor! Off with his head LOL |
Posted by: maggiemahone1 27-Sep-2003, 04:46 PM |
Tough decision, I voted for the MEN IN KILTS! maggiemahone1 |
Posted by: MDF3530 28-Sep-2003, 01:59 PM |
Seriously, I voted for the heavy athletics because that is where most of the field events for track and field competitions started. |
Posted by: 3Ravens 28-Sep-2003, 03:42 PM |
Well....the music wins by a hair! But if I could have voted a tie, the hairy legs would have been right up there! Doesn't matter whose tartan they are wearing, I just like those men in kilts. There were definently some men in kilts at the Williamsburg games yesterday! WHOO-HOO!!!! |
Posted by: RavenWing 29-Sep-2003, 10:47 AM |
There should have been a choice called "Men in sporrans" |
Posted by: 3Ravens 29-Sep-2003, 11:41 AM |
Is that sporran by itself, or over a kilt? |
Posted by: Mimossa 29-Sep-2003, 04:12 PM |
i do so love men in kilts especially when there are whole bunches of men in kilts of course i love the music as much i like to listen to fab music and watch the men in kilts time for a pint mostly i love my man in his kilt MMMmmmmmmmmmmmm yummy |
Posted by: Macfive 29-Sep-2003, 07:07 PM
I never knew that. Thank you! Does one make you more drunk than the next? |
Posted by: scottish2 29-Sep-2003, 07:25 PM |
Best way to find out is give it a whirl. LOL |
Posted by: Catriona 30-Sep-2003, 03:41 AM
It's just become the conventional way of differentiating between the products of the two countries.... It's silly, but it is something that always sparks a debate on other 'Scots' boards I visit! I think US bourbons may use the Scots spelling, although I can't be sure as I would only drink them when I was really desperate for a drink! I have to admit that I quite like the occasional Irish whiskey.... I'm with Scottish2 on how to learn which one makes you drunkest, quickest |
Posted by: 3Ravens 30-Sep-2003, 05:46 AM |
Here's how I tell 'em apart....Whisky should be neat, and whiskey goes in coffee, with whipped cream! (but watch out for those whiskys that taste like someone set a peat bog on fire and then put it in a bottle, you always wake up on the floor after those!) |
Posted by: Annabelle 30-Sep-2003, 09:11 AM |
Greetin's all, There ia nothing so moving as at being at a Scottish Tattoo! Amazing Grace always makes me cry. Although I do hear the pipes for 3-4 days later... it's like replay for me, ha ha! Guess you have to love it. Annabelle |
Posted by: Keltic 30-Sep-2003, 09:17 AM
It makes me cry when it's played badly! |
Posted by: MDF3530 30-Sep-2003, 04:10 PM |
I have left instructions with my next of kin that at my funeral mass, I want "Amazing Grace" to be the recessional. It is to be played by a solitary bagpiper in full regalia, and the bagpiper is to lead the party out. |

Our local event was this past weekend. The weather was beautiful, with a slight chill to the air. Lots of great music, from Trad to atl. celtic, or celtic rock. ( no distortion...just kicked up) The big name act this year was Old Blind Dogs. Good show, and a fun group of lads. Ran into a fellow from Ireland that sells dehydrated peat. To use somewhat like wood is used in a BBQ grill. Since peat was the source of heat and cooking . Had some DELICIOUS samples. He was a great fellow. Gave me his address told me to look him up when we go ack over. It was good time! After the fest on Saturday, we gathered at the hotel, that everyone was staying at... Ate a wee bit, had a few pints and had a bit of a Jam. The were about 30 of us all together. It went to the wee hours of the morning... It was a good time as well.... Didn't get to see any of the highland games though... I was working sound at the time...there is always next year... Cheers |

I had ta vote for the Whisky tasting, it adds a nice glow to all the other topics. The music sounds better, the women look even better and with enough even a few of the men start looking good. I know then, that's the time to quit. |
Posted by: High Plains Drifter 06-Oct-2003, 09:57 PM |
I've got to agree with Annabelle, I voted for concerts because Tattoo was not a choice. Bourbon is spelled Whiskey like the Irish by the way. |
Posted by: luannea 07-Oct-2003, 09:07 AM |
No matter the shape, size, style, or occasion, there's nothin' finer nor more pleasin' to the eye than men in kilts |
Posted by: A Shrule Egan 07-Oct-2003, 06:53 PM |
Went to the Celtic Fest in Bethlehem, Pa. last week. Glengarry Bhoys were the main attraction. So, my choice had to be concerts. It would have been the Bethlehem Brewery, if Paul had included it on the list. The Irish Stout was rather smooth. CHEERS!!!!! |

The Ligoner Highland games are by where I live .. There are so many things to enjoy,, but I have to go for the Kilted men ! There is a party at Pennsic, The Men With Out Pants Party,, Kilts only !!!! This year at the games. I saw something , I am still giggleing over.. In the mist of over 100 pipe bands tuning, and endless single pipers, contained in one lovley tree canopied area.. Imagine the sound ! I can still hear it ! There was a woman with a cell phone to her ear, finger stuffed in the other .. "huh? what? huh? " She won the Village Idoit Award of the Day in my eyes ! Paula |

Maybe it was the same lady that I seen at our Celtic Festival in August. My goodness I was beginning to think that cell phone was glued to her ear. maggiemahone1 |

i LOVE THE RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL ESPECIALLY THE CLOTHES |

I'm all about my Scotch. Best I've tasted yet was a bottle of 30yr Glenfiddich pure single malt that Angela gave me this past Christmas. It cost FAR too much though, so I doubt I'll be trying it again any time soon. I usually drink the 12yr Glenfiddich, when I drink at all. |

Mmmmmmmmmm....Men in kilts..... you bet'cha! |
Posted by: Infamous 26-Oct-2003, 03:31 PM |
I prefer the heavy athletics (that I participate in) and, of course, the music. jJust wish there were more closer to home. |
Posted by: Pagan 04-Nov-2003, 02:56 PM |
I love to go and watch all the people. Austin is a great town for people watching. All ways something going on in town. I love music and live music is even better. I do love a man in a kilt. Not all men should wear them though. It takes a certain kind of man. No twiggy men please! ha ha sorry guys! He must be tall thick chest, heavy muscular legs. A little hairy is ok but no winter coats. Oh lord, I am not making a good impression here. What must you think of me?! Anyway....mmmmm men kilts. Ok... difinate fave and the music and the vendors and the dancing and everything really. |

I love the music at these things but I especially like working as a vendor. Good people, great fun. Besides, when your working as a kilt vendor, you can go pants free for days at a time! |
Posted by: Keltic 04-Nov-2003, 10:25 PM
If your tables are high enough you can go pants and kilt free. (not that I have) |

I would love to vote on this one but considering that I have never been to one of these I can't in good honor vote. Oregon doesn't have anything like this. I would love to start something like Highland games considering how many Celtic people we have in this state but I wouldn't even know where to start. Blessed Be, Angel |

It was really hard to vote on this one as I love several things about the Highland games. In Arizona here we have three a year! 1) the Men in kilts 2) the pipers and drum bands (I hear the pipes for days too afterwards ) 3) The Vendors cause I love to buy the Celtic jewelry. 4) The Highland dancing 5) Clan MacPherson booth I am also a big fan of the Renaissance festivals. Attend that every year. I love the period costumes and all the fun be had by there. Some good looking men in kilts there too! |
Posted by: rock_serenade 01-Mar-2004, 05:23 PM |
I love the piping and the dancing and the drumming and just everything at the games, its a great way to spend the day, and if the vendors are local craftsman then you can get some great buys on fantastic nicknacks |
Posted by: CelticRose 02-Mar-2004, 04:07 PM |
We are one of our three Highland games this past weekend! It was really big and awesome! Alex Beaton was there performing and I so I hung around for most of the day listening to him. Was neat to hear her perform some of the songs I have heard here on CR. I got to hear my favorite Scottish song, Scotland the Brave from the pipes and drum. Such both a sad and proud song. Then I had some meat pie for lunch. That was good, but then never having had it in Scotland I had nothing to compare it to. Would like to know what the meat and mixture is inside the meat pie. Anybody know? Not that it matters, just curious. |
Posted by: Catriona 02-Mar-2004, 04:19 PM |
Was it a steak pie, or a mutton pie, CR? Steak pie is often made with flaky or rough puff pastry and our mutton pies are made with a water crust . The filling is mutton and onions with a blend of spices (depending on which baker you buy them from!) The filling in mutton pies is a little 'peppery', but delicious. |
Posted by: CelticRose 02-Mar-2004, 04:38 PM
Cat! Uh! I couldn't tell you, honestly. but I would venture to say it was mutton pie from what you described! However, the crust was about 1 inch thick and very heavy. I am sure the people here didn't do it justice as I would have gotten in Scotland. If it was peppery, it wasn't enough for me! I love that! But it still was very very good! They had cornbeef and cabbage too. I LOVE cabbage! But don't care for corn beef though. I am already planning to go the games in Flagstaff in July and hopefully will have other Scottish delicacies! Plus, one of my favorite bands is going to be there, the Wicked Tinkers! Will have to spend the night for that event as it is 3-1/2 hours away. |
Posted by: A Shrule Egan 02-Mar-2004, 09:07 PM
Rosemary, make sure you sit near the stage or an aisle seat. And wear your dancing shoes. The Tinkers come off the stage (yea, like that's something new with them) and form a conga line. You just have to jump in line. |
Posted by: CelticRose 02-Mar-2004, 09:37 PM |
Oh thank you Mike! I have spoken to hubby about it tonight and he said he was game to go! I am so excited! It is not until July 17, but I so want to see the Wicked Tinkers. I just really love their music! I want to make my reservations a head of time for hotel accomodations. Now also, my favorite author, Diana Gabaldon, will be there too doing a reading and book signing! That's how I found out about it! So there are more reasons for me to go than one! Plus, if you have never been to Flagstaff, Arizona, it is a place to be and go to! Very beautiful place up in the mountains! Anyway, Mike! Thanks for telling me! Sounds like a lot of fun! |
Posted by: MDF3530 02-Mar-2004, 09:45 PM |
I just found out that The Irish Rovers played practically in my backyard this past weekend and I didn't know about it !!! |
Posted by: Catriona 03-Mar-2004, 04:26 AM
Pastry AN INCH THICK? It must have been AWFUL! A water crust pastry should basically be a thin shell to hold the meat filling, with a thin 'lid' which has a hole in the centre to allow the steam to be released during cooking, and is just the right size to let you put a good dollop of HP sauce into the meat mixture.... The one you ate sounds like you could have used it as a doorstop!!! You'll just have to wait for your trip to Scotland to find out how mutton pies are supposed to taste! Corned beef and cabbage is what we mostly consider an Irish dish - so you seemed to have the foods of other Celtic nations at your Games, CR! Cat |
Posted by: CelticRose 03-Mar-2004, 04:44 AM |
Cat! I would agree it could have been comparable to a doorstop! I was trying to be polite as I have no idea what true Scottish food should taste like! It didn't have hole in the middle. Only an inch thick crust and very hard at that...............a doorstop! I still liked it though. Can you imagine what I would think of the real thing? Yummy! Well you know? I thought corn beef and cabbage was an Irish dish, but I was not sure! I just know I don't like cornbeef! My mother used to cook it all the time............she must have been Irish for sure............and I always hated the cornbeef.....yuk. The cabbage? I swear I could eat a whole head of that stuff! I just love it! |
Posted by: CelticRose 03-Mar-2004, 04:46 AM
Oh no! Mike! How horrible! Poor you! |
Posted by: tsargent62 03-Mar-2004, 12:57 PM |
I just happened upon this thread. There's one thing missing from the poll. Beer Tents! There's nothing like finishing massed bands (I've been in more than I can count) and cooling of with some nice cold suds. |
Posted by: A Shrule Egan 06-Mar-2004, 11:17 AM
Hmmmm........I thought that WAS the reason I was going to those festivals!!! That and the whiskey tasting. Paul, can you make an addition to that poll? |
Posted by: CelticRose 06-Mar-2004, 02:34 PM |
I don't think we had that our games, the suds and the whisky. I know they do at our renaissance festival which is going on now and I have yet to make! |
Posted by: A Shrule Egan 06-Mar-2004, 03:27 PM |
Rosemary, it's obvious that you need to make better selections of your festivals. Keltic festivals WITHOUT booze!!!!!!! Add to those frequent flyer miles and get back here to the east coast and I'll take you a few of the festivals. Booze included!!!!! (Paul needs to add a smiley for whiskey shots.) |
Posted by: CelticRose 06-Mar-2004, 03:39 PM |
Mike! you made me laugh out loud! It is very obvious that I need to go to the east coast for your Highland games! Geez! I never saw any wisky or suds at my games last weekend. The best I got was a doorstop meat pie! I was really missing out. I hope to go to the ones in Flagstaff, so maybe it will be better there! |
Posted by: A Shrule Egan 06-Mar-2004, 03:50 PM |
Don't they have web pages for the festivals out there? It should tell you what's included in the days activities. I always found drinking to be an activity. One that I try to excel at. |
Posted by: Arianrhod 07-Mar-2004, 05:50 PM |
Here are two pics from my own beloved Ligonier Highland Games The Bridge takes you to the main part of the games.. Elspeth will recognise this... And the Highland Cow is eye candy for Jason !!! In Service to the Dream , Paula Im so embarrased, they wont post sorry |
Posted by: CelticRose 07-Mar-2004, 06:12 PM
Yes! they have web pages for the festivals out here. In fact, I just got one for the Highland game for Flagstaff and made our reservations already for July 17, 18! Hubby will be with me so hopefully there will be some suds to imbibe in! I am so excited I can hardly contain myself. I love Flagstaff as it is nestled high up in the mountains of Arizona and it is so beautifull! Only an hour from the Grand Canyon. I have been to many Indian powwows up there but never a Highland game. so I got my reservations and I going to see my favorite author and the Wicked Tinkers! Yippee! Paula! Sorry your pics didn't work! boo hoo! |
Posted by: Arianrhod 07-Mar-2004, 07:10 PM |
I had burned them on to disk.. and am not a puter genius, so.. Ill have to print them out and make Jason a T shirt LOL... Rose Id LOVE to go to the Pow Wows you get to go to ! They must be amazing ! In Service to the Dream, Paula |
Posted by: reharper 07-Mar-2004, 07:38 PM |
My Wife would vote - "Men in Kilts" Too bad one can only vote for one, because HighlandGames/Festivles are all of these things. I have the privlege of living in NC where we have 8 or 9 games a year we go to. Come visit the Grand daddy of them all - Grandfather Mountain - July 8 - 11 - come hang out at the Clan Wallace tent and have a great time. |
Posted by: CelticRose 07-Mar-2004, 07:44 PM |
Woweeeeeeee! really harper? I used to live in Asheville and at the time I was not into Highland games, let alone ever heard of them. I know exactly where Grandfather Mountain is! Boo hoo! Wish I had known then what I know now, but at the time I was hanging out at Native American powwows and enjoying myself there tremondously. It is amazing how many similarities there are between the Highlanders of old Scotland and the Native American culture here. Paula! You would love the powwows. So rich in culture, wonderful people and good food too! |
Posted by: A Shrule Egan 07-Mar-2004, 07:55 PM
Rosemary, I think you said this was at the same place as the POWWOW's you went to. Maybe it's in your best interest to bring your own whiskey, just to cover your a**. You know what happened to General Custard, the last time he didn't bring whiskey to the POWWOW??!!!! |
Posted by: Arianrhod 07-Mar-2004, 07:59 PM |
Ah Rose..... I can smell the fry bread ! reharper.. Going to try to make GFM this year ! I will PM you if we go ... My boyfriend is from Wrightsfield Beach , Clan Henderson.. Making that game is on the very top of our list ! In Service to the Dream , Paula |
Posted by: CelticRose 07-Mar-2004, 08:10 PM
Mike! Better believe I will be bringing my own brew! I bring it everywhere I go! always have to be prepared you know! They don't allow alcohol at powwows. But I swear I have the best beer at Renaissance festivals! I have drank Scotch before and got so sick I thought I would die and so have never touched it again. But it could have been the blind date I was on, I NEEDED the Scotch and took in too much! |

Ack!!! I feel so ..... left out!!! New to the board, and looking to get seriously involved in honoring my Irish heritage (especially the whisky drinking and really loud off-key singing!!!!) I read upthread that Williamsburg, VA holds games each year??? Well, now that I know!!! I live 45 minutes from there! (Virginia Beach) Anyone know of any others in this area?? And, even tho I have never been, I am pretty sure I know what will be my favorite. Any time I get to hear bagpipes (there was a lone piper at a friend's funeral...I could not even talk...) it moves me. |
Posted by: booker1122 03-Apr-2004, 08:43 AM |
* hangs head in shame * Just did a bit of research, and found a local (20 minute drive), though small, event in my area TODAY. Yes, today... when I will be working 10 hours! I imagine that this is not news to regulars, but if you are new like me, there is a pretty comprehensive event listing at http://www.maclachlans.org/games.html hmmmmm... have not posted using codes on this board yet... hope that worked... Anyway... maybe I can get there before they clean up this evening.... |
Posted by: ChuckDenton 04-Apr-2004, 01:10 AM |
The music, the vendors and the bagpipes...all contribute to a great outing. The food, the sites, the people. It's all great, and now that Spring is here and the season's upon us...I can't wait! |
Posted by: CelticRose 10-Apr-2004, 03:49 PM |
I think I said this already, but I am attending the Scottish Highland games in July up in Flagstaff, Arizona. Get to see the Wicked Tinkers there.............woo hoo! |
Posted by: wizardofowls 30-May-2004, 10:44 AM |
Although I love most everything that there is to see and hear at our local Highlander Festival (at Radford University in Vriginia every October), I have to say that I would still go if there was nothing else to see but the vendors! I love walking around and looking at all of the fascinating things I wish I could afford to buy! |
Posted by: CelticRose 30-May-2004, 07:02 PM |
Allen! I love the venders too...............and I always buy! |

Posted by: CelticRose 30-May-2004, 11:41 PM
Keltic! That is the first place I hit is the venders! I buy all kinds of stuff from them.......mostly jewelry! |
Posted by: Eamon 31-May-2004, 04:53 AM |
Toughie... Concerts (Shrule can back me up on this..Celtic Classic always has great bands) Massed Bands Any sort of 'tasting'...(makes the bands sound better) vendors (especially if they are vending yummy adult beverages) Ah, heck! It is all part and parcel! Paul, you should have put an "All of the above" in your Poll! Eamon |
