Hi Drummie. I haven't checked into the forums for a while, so this is the first I've seen your message about a possible meet-up in our area. Did anything come of your idea? I get my live Celtic music fixes at concerts at the Blackstone River Theater in Cumberland, RI. Do you have any places near you that feature live music? Bob

As for local groups, Pendragon, based in Rhode Island, has been performing for many years and is widely regarded for their wide ranging selections.

I saw parts of the PBS show featuring tThe High Kings last night on Boston's WGBH and was wondering if anybody else is familiar with them. I thought parts of their show were very good, but other parts were quite "scripted", similar to the show put on by Celtic Women. I did see a familiar face in the audience at one point--Aoife Clancy. Has anyone else seen their show, and do you have an opinion of them?

Lunasa put on a brilliant performance to a sold out audience last night at the Blackstone River Theater in Cumberland, RI. Kevin Crawford was, as always, the genial and very funny spokesperson for the group, although Sean Smyth managed to sneak in a few funny comments as well. But it was the music that all came to hear, and nobody was disappointed. We were treated to a very energetic and wide-reaching performance, one not to be missed if they will be appearing in your area!

I recently had the opportunity to see Barrage perform their amazing show in Wayland, MA. These musicians are incredible, and if you have the chance to see them, you won't be disappointed. They have a wide repertoire, with Celtic well represented. Jason Hurwitz, the son of a close friend, is one of the members of the group, and it was great fun to see him in a professional capacity.

Dougie MacLean performed on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Blackstone River Theater in Cumberland, RI, which is a small and intimate venue, just a perfect place in which to experience his concert. He is such an accomplished songwriter and composer, and he exudes a familiar and friendly personality. Audience particpation was great, and laughs were many, especially as a result of a bit of a complicated chorus of one particlar song, but Dougie good-naturedly retaught us so we eventually "got it". A magical evening of music from one of Scotland's pre-eminent performers. He'll be performing again in the US as part of Brian O'Donovan's Christmas Celtic Sojourn in Boston in December, so Celtic music fans in New England will have another opportunity to see him again soon.

One of the most fantastic places I've ever hiked was through Bryce Canyon. I was only planning to stay for a couple of days, but I just couldn't leave, so I extended my stay. I hiked all of the available trails several times and went out at first light until last light. The changing colors of the hoodoos were mesmerizing, particularly at sunrise and sunset. I'd been to Zion on my way to Bryce, and that had floored me as well, but I'm glad now that I visited them in that order because Zion was would have been a disappointment following Bryce. I've also hiked trails in Oregon and northern CA, as well as some in AZ in the desert mountains. All are spectacular in their own rights. Even my favorite local trail here in RI at Trustom Wildlife Refuge has its own appeal of a mix of woods and ocean, so you can find beauty wherever you are.

I attended Jim Malcolm's performance last night at the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, MA. It is a small auditorium, which was perfect for someone of his talents. The concert was outstanding. He was really able to showcase his guitar and harmonica playing, as well as his smooth, rich voice in his interpretations of Robert Burns' poetry and his own compositions. And he even had his "little man" dancing on the paddle! If he's coming to your area in the next few weeks here in the US, do make a point of seeing him--you won't be sorry! You can check out his upcoming shows at his website http://www.jimmalcolm.com/ .

Just wanted to mention the wonderful job the crew from the Blackstone River Theatre did in producing a fantastic day of music, dance, and theater at Diamond Hill Park in Cumberland, RI on Saturday. Among the performers were The Jennifer Roland Band, The April Verch Band, The Clancy Legacy(Aoife Clancy, Donal Clancy & Robbie O'Connell), Pendragon,Windharp, The Gnomes, The Atwater-Donnelly Trio, The Publicans, and The Eastern Trad Trio, plus a number of dance groups and childrens' performers. The festival was very well organized and the three stage set-up allowed options for seeing a number of performers at any one time. As is now expected with the Blackstone River Theatre folks, everything was at a high standard. They're aiming for a two-day festival next year, so anyone in the Northeast part of the US should check out their website at www.riverfolk.org for the upcoming season's schedule and for more information on next summer's festival. Congratulations on a very successful first-time effort!

I had the opportunity on Saturday night to see the Scottish group, Back Of The Moon, at The Blackstone River Theater in Cumberland, RI. They were terrific! If you see them on a venue schedule in your area, you should make an effort to get to their concert. They really put on a great evening of music. In 2005, they won the "Best Folk Band" at the Scottish Trad Music Awards, a well-deserved prize, judging from their performance on Saturday night.
