With development on our site calming down, we would like to focus more on obtaining quality music for our broadcast.

Feel free to recommend your favorite musicians and music here. We will attempt to write to the musician and obtain their CD. Plus we will ask real nicely if they wish to send a few extra copies for our beloved listeners and members!

I'd like to suggest http://www.patriciamurray.ca/. She has a wonderful voice, and sings quite a bit in Gaelic.

Also like to suggest http://www.tempestmusic.com/.

I would like to hear from a Celtic band out of western New York called Kilbrannan.
They are a four-man band that performs original music and modern arrangements of traditional Irish and Scottish tunes.

I'd also like to suggest the Acadian band http://www.barachois.com/menu_en.cfm. I'm not sure if Acadian music fits CR's agenda, but it's good music. smile.gif

I'd like to hear a Chicago-based band called Arranmore. Here is their website:

http://www.arranmore.com

Here's my favorite song of theirs:

"South Side Irish" is a local favorite in my neighborhood. One of the local high school marching bands has even taken to playing it in both the St. Patrick's Day parade (held on the Saturday before Paddy's Day) and the South Side Irish parade (the day after the St. Patrick's parade) biggrin.gif .

Ok, here's another. http://brendannolan.com/ is a local here in Florida, born and reared in Ireland. I've seen him a few time at the local pub, and own one of his CD's.

Paul...If I don't have a web link to an artist, would you care for a phone number? There is another artist who plays here in Florida in the winter months, but all I have for him is a booking phone number. He does have at least 1 CD. His name is JJ Smith. Let me know if you want me to PM you the number.

I also wouldn't mind seeing more of David Arkenstone. He's on the Narada Label. Arkenstone gives a new age twist to his music. Narada also has one or two Celtic compilation CD's.

Posted by: Avonlea22 25-Aug-2004, 05:19 PM
Ok. Ok. I thought of one more. Wow, what a pain I am, eh? http://www.maggiesmusic.com/mmsr.html plays some really beautiful harp music. I'd certainly like to hear more of her than the one CD I own. smile.gif

Right on! thumbs_up.gif

Kilbrannan rules! king.gif While nothing beats a live show, their cd's
sure come pretty darn close. I definitely recommend visiting their
website (where you can listen to their music), and would love to hear them on Celtic Radio.

They are an extrmemly talented and entertaining group, and I've actually
started planning my work schedule around some of their shows when I can.

Here's to Kilbrannan! beer_mug.gif

Haven't quite figured out how to work this "quote" feature, but I must say I WHOLE HEARTEDLY agree with what Cragganmore (Craig) & ChickenChick (Kathleen) posted about Kilbrannan.

They are an exceptionally talented group of musicians and certainly are the pride of the Buffalo region. They not only excel at delivery of traditional songs, but are extremely gifted songwriters.

I might also add that the solo CD's of Kilbrannan's lead singer, Kirk S. McWhorter ("Brambleshire Wood" & "Eye of the Storm") and the newly released "Misery Loves Company" (McWhorter & Tim Leonard (Kilbrannan's acoustic guitarist) are amazing and definitely worth acquiring.

Their lead guitarist, Paul Runfola, just recently competed in the 2004 North American Rock Guitar Competition and placed second. (He lost by only one point). An article on this competition and the "hot guitarist alert" appear in the October issue of Guitar Player magazine.

But don't just take my word that they are awesome ... give them a listen. walkman.gif I guarantee you too will be hooked! note.gif

I love Carlos Núñez. He's a musician from Spain, but better known in France.

He plays the bagpipes and whisltes, but plays with a whole band. I speciall like his quality folk mixin. Celtic with Salsa, Celtic with flamenco...

He's not a begginer at all, so a question comes into my mind. Do you need to ask everybody before playing their music? I thought so, but the thing is... Have you asked the chieftains, clannad or Altan? I so, go ahead for Carlos Núñez!

Posted by: ANNHAM 05-Sep-2004, 08:11 AM
I love Brian Boru by Alan Stivell... I have a CD set called Celtic Circle which has it and a variety of other musicians and songs that I like. Another is Skellig by Loreena Mckinnett.

Brother
http://www.brothermusic.com

A good band, but they don't play traditional Celtic. They are part Celtic, part Australian, part rock/pop. They use the bagpipes, didgeridoo, etc and are quite enjoyable to listen to.

Even if they don't end up on here, everyone should at least check them out.

i'll hopefully be seeing them in november at the dunedin celtic festival. i'd certainly like to hear some of their music before i go. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Sekhmet 14-Sep-2004, 05:39 PM
Oh, geez...there's a ton!

I'd love to have more here from the following:

Alex Beaton
Old Blind Dogs
Andy M. Stewart
Celtic Soul

I would highly suggest:

Dust Rhinos

Wylde Nept

97th Regiment String Band (They're a Civil War group, but they not only do a lot of Celtic crossovers, but they're just wonderful! Especially the Sea Chanteys album.)

Acoustic Shadows of the Blue and the Gray (The name's a mouthful, but they're another Civil War group that are excellent. Doesn't help that they originated from my regiment so um...I'm a little biased. tongue.gif)

Boys of the Lough

The Bothy Band

Celtic Nots

Steeleye Span

TamLyn

Aeone

Jera Denny

Now, if you aren't afraid to get into the realm of filk, there's a few artists who have done great crossover songs. Of those, I'd go with the big ones, like Leslie Fish, Heather Alexander, and Julia Ecklar.

Ok, I'm done now!

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Pleasanton Highland Games and heard from a band called Kinship. I really enjoyed their music and didn't see any of it in your playlist.

If I missed it, I apologize for the redundancy...I'm new to your site. You have a wonderful community here, and a beautiful site.

Two words...Moya Brennan!! her album "Whisper to Wild Water" encapsulates all that is good in celtic music..IMHO

I discovered recently a wonderful celtic album. It's from Nolwenn Korbell, a breton singer, the name of the album is "N'eo ket echu" (it's not the end).

You can hear some extracts here :

Here in the Albany New York area the band Hair of The Dog is a really good local band. Personally I like Flogging Molly, Hair of THe Dog, and the Glengharry Bhoys as well as a lot of the other more popular bands and singers.

I am pretty sure we have received music from some of the suggested groups. Will have it all indexed within a few days.

I saw Le Vent Du Nord perform in Montreal during this past summer at Francofolie. They played at the Trad" booth. Also headlining was La Bouttine Souriante ( referred by Dirty Linen Mag. as the best band in the world biggrin.gif ) I also saw Vent Du Nord perform on CBC TV with the Chieftains a few months ago.

La Bouttine Souriante ( Smiling Boot )

I recommend Malinky! I have Last Leaves, and it's wonderful. They have beautiful accents, and the music is gorgeous (and very easy to get stuck in your head, to which one of my friends can attest - although I probably shouldn't have played "Alison Cross" quite so many times - I just love the instrumental part building the dramatic background for the singing.)

Their website is http://www.malinky.com/

Let's talk a bit about Breton music... tongue.gif

I suppose you don't know Dan Ar Braz, a breton musician (great guitarist) and singer, very famous in France and creator of The Celts Heritage. I would love to hear his music on CR, even if it's not really my "cup of tea"...I prefer something more punchy like Boxty or Anthony Chaplain des Côtes d'Armor...but I'll speak of them later wink.gif

Brian Mc Combe is an Irishman who migrated to Brittany.
He arrived in January 2002 with a camping car, a set of bagpipes, a voice and... "five euros in his pocket".
His album, The voice of the blood is a tribute to Ireland and to Scotland, even if they are far away, they are always in his heart and above all in his music.
Singing on Breton musics and lyrics, as well as pure Irish compositions, Brian Mc Combe has a voice which is not be forgoten smile.gif

I have a couple of requests, both groups have been around for a long time but the music holds up very well.

http://www.dervish.ie/ has been around for a while and they are still together and releasing new CDs.

http://www.planxty.ie/ is an old group that is no longer together but they reunited last year and did a great live CD.

Finally, http://www.betsymcgovern.com/Index.html, of Irish Bayou Music, who with her band, The Poor Clares, rocked Festival International (a mostly French music festival) the year the theme was the Celtic connection. My personal favorite CD was Change of Habit but they were all good.
