Who Is Using Router, whether wired or wireless

not only to share connection between 2 computers
and the built-in firewall is handy
like the netblaster and sasser event
router gives a big help

I've got a little 4 port linksys wireless that I use here at the house... can't divulge the work setup... but yeah, the nat capabilities are great. all I have to do is deny any port I don't want coming in, and I am feeling good. But... as we say in the IT Sec world, "Firewalls and routers are just speedbumps in the internet super highway." Don't rely solely on them.

I've got the same set up as Danann simply so that I can share my cable with my other PC's But the firewall is handy even if it only slows down a determined hacker

I use a old Pentium I running Linux and iptables to share a modem for home. I have several hubs as a back bone. Works well ans allows me to have my own machine. Wife and Kids have their own.

Similar to Madadh

AMD Duron 1ghz running a NAT kernel and IPtables to manage the DSL connection, and be the firewall. Plugged into a ~5 port 10/100 switch, and then one port on said switch providing upling to a little 10 mbit hub that I plan on replacing soon (tomorrow has come to mind, I'm getting sick and tired of the thing)

Been using routers for years, Linksys!!!!
Have always use Linksys routers and Linksys cards in the systems I build.
I've only had one problem with their routers and they replaced it very fast, was quite impressed, and the built in firewall is a bonus.

All my networks are hardwired, I don't trust wireless. From what I have heard, no one has the security on the wireless like you can have when hardwired.

Amen to that on the wireless, although the only place I haven't had horrid luck with Linksys, has been at home...

I have a similar setup to Danann. 4 port Linksys wireless router. The difference is I don't have a firewall running on the router. I have personal firewalls running on the PCs. So far that's worked. I have ethernet address filtering running and all transmissions are encrypted. So, although it's not foolproof, it would at least slow someone down from getting in. DHCP and NAT are handy.

Aaediwen, of course you have no problems at home. There's no one there to criticize your work or choice of hardware.

noone critisized my work outside the home either =) I just had issues with getting the hardware working like it should. Got it going eventually, but it simply didn't want to work right. Don't remember exactly what OS it was, but at the time the shop was running 98, and 2000.
