This is not a Trad. but it does speak of the hardships of miners that was/is prevelant in Newfoundland, Wales, and other locations where mining is the livelyhood of the community...

Chemical Workers Song (or: I.C.I. Song)

* Ron Angel

Go, boy, go
They time your every breath
Every day you're in this place
You're two days nearer death
But you go

A process man am I, I'm telling you no lie
I work and breathe among the fumes that trail across the sky
There's thunder all around me, poison in the air
A lousy smell that smacks of hell, dust all in my hair

I've worked among the spinners, breathed in the oily smoke
Shovelled at the gypsum that nigh on makes you choke
I've stood knee-deep in cyanide, got sick with the caustic burn
Been working rough, seen enough to make your stomach turn

There's overtime and bonus, opportunities galore
Young men like the money, they all come back for more
But soon you're knocking on, looking older than you should
Every bob made on this job is earned with sweat and blood

Repeat 1

relly nice lyrics. Being from Kentucky, we have mines everywhere. I'm in the western part of the state, and are not so much dependent on them as we used to be. The eastern part of the state is still very dependent. I still have a fwe family members and friends working in them.

I like this song a lot. My all-time favorite group (Great Big Sea) sings it. They have a clip of it on their website at http://www.greatbigsea.com/themusic/up.cfm
The Chemical Worker's Song is the 10th song on the list.
