The Kindred Spirits Whisky Tasting enjoys the informal title as the Largest Whisky Tasting in the South, both in attendance and representation of the whiskies!
This event is sponsored by Wine & Spirits in the Quarter to raise funds in support of CelticFest Mississippi. Kindred Spirits will run from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm during the Festival on Saturday and will be a come and go format.
Shifting away from the sit-down format, Kindred Spirits allows the taster to build his or her own self-paced whisky tasting. Each admission receives 15 or 35 coupons to redeem for half-ounce pours. With many whiskies to choose from, pours are redeemed for one to six coupons, depending on the price of the bottle (not its rarity!). Knowledgeable experts will staff the pouring stations, and additional coupons are available for purchase at the event.
“This event has always been a great way to learn about Irish and Scottish whiskies, and a huge value for sampling high-end distillations,” says Perry Launius, one of the Kindred Spirits’ organizers. “With this format, you make your own tasting itinerary, get answers for your questions, and learn about one of the oldest surviving Celtic traditions.”

Historically, Irish music is passed down from generation to generation, but in Dallas as with other communities in Texas and surrounding states, there weren’t players of an older generation fulfilling that call, with the exception of Jim O’Flaherty. Jim was born in Listowel, Ireland and came to America at the age of 18. He played the tinwhistle, flute, concertina, fiddle and the uilleann pipes. An airline pilot, Jim had 10 children, all of whom played musical instruments, and he was careful to teach them the music of his homeland. Living with his family near Denton, Texas, Jim’s home regularly became a place where beginning Irish players gathered for potluck and the sharing of tunes. His “sessions” were always eagerly anticipated and served to unite the traditional Irish music community in North Texas.
As a tribute to Jim who passed away in 2001, a Dallas musician named Ken Fleming organized the O’Flaherty Irish Music Retreat. The retreat focuses on the teaching of traditional Irish music on fiddle, flute, harp, uilleann pipes, tenor banjo, mandolin, bouzouki, bodhran, guitar, piano, accordion and concertina. Singing in English and Gaelic are taught along with enrichment classes pertaining to music history, session etiquette, music arrangements, learning resources, and more. A number of the instructors are internationally-acclaimed performers and teachers many of whom are brought over from Ireland.
DANCE NOTE: Pat Murphy (the author of several books on set dancing and maybe the most well-known and highly-regarded set dancing teacher active in the world today) will be one of the instructors at the retreat.
Pat Murphy is an accordion player and renowned Set Dancing Master from Upperchurch, County Tipperary. His first contact with set dancing happened in his own home where his father Jack played the accordion, and often the Ballycommon and Castle sets were danced. In the early 1980’s Pat got actively involved in teaching and reviving sets. With his wonderful demeanor and teaching style, his reputation soon spread, and he was invited to teach set dancing all over the world. He has lead workshops in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia and practically every country in Europe.
He is the author of four books on Set Dancing: “Toss the Feathers”, "The Flowing Tide", "Apples in Winter" and “Tabhair Dom Do Lámh" and has produced several DVDs containing set and two-hand dance instruction. Pat is passionate about spreading the dances and ensuring that they are not lost again, as happened in previous times.

Saturday, April 8, we have a very special treat in store! Brían Ó hAirt will be giving a workshop on beginning sean-nós dancing (an older-style, traditional form of Irish solo dancing). The workshop will begin at 10:30 a.m. He is a great teacher and only in town for the weekend. This workshop will be beginner-friendly and suitable for all ages, 6 and up.
$10 for JID members and $15 for non-members. If you’re an old hand at sean-nós, come anyway – great warmup for Sunday’s workshop!
Sunday, April 9 will bring an intermediate/advanced-level sean-nós workshop with Brían from 1:00 pm to 2:30 p.m. ($10 for JID members and $15 for non-members).
Both workshops will be held at Applause Dance Factory at 242 Stephens St, Ridgeland, MS 39157
Also on Sunday, April 9, it’s time for the return of the Mostly Monthly Céilí at Fenian’s Pub from 4:00p.m.-6:00 p.m. with Emerald Accent and Brían. Huge weekend – don’t miss it!

Happy (early) St Patrick’s Day to All!
My troupe will be dancing (traditional set and sean nós) at a retirement center this and next Tuesday in celebration, and then on Thursday my hubby and I will go to Fenian’s pub to listen to some great traditional music, do some dancing, and enjoy the craic.

Welcome! Some of the stations are only available to Founding Members. I was a non-paying member for a very long time and not long ago joined at the Founder’s Club level, but I do remember prior to joining the Founder’s Club that sometimes I would receive a “join now” message when trying to access the Highlander Radio station through the CelticRadio.net website. I can’t remember exactly the circumstances of receiving that message but I do remember it was contingent upon how I tried to access the station. I don’t know if this helps you at all, but it is an issue I encountered after the dust began to settle around who would be hosting CelticRadio.net for licensing purposes. I just never emailed CelticRadio.net for an explanation or perused a resolution on how to consistently gain access to Highlander Radio. I would suggest emailing CelticRadio.net (http://contact.celticradio.net/) to see what they have to say and to receive technical support. |

Celtic Fest Mississippi is an annual event held at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum since 1992, celebrating the traditional music and dance of the Celtic nations including Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Brittany. The festival has featured performances from many well-known Celtic musicians and artisans over the years. It has now grown to a 3-day event with multiple music/dance stages, several workshop areas, public dances, singing and music sessions, an educational children’s area, numerous Celtic exhibits, ample vending of food and Celtic specialty items. FYI… I did some digging around and cleared out some browsing history, cookies and the cache. That worked! When I click on the “listen now” button, the website now says "Officially Licensed under SonixCast!" instead of Radionomy.

I am trying to listen to Highlander Radio. I checked the app on my phone and it will play the same songs celticradio.net (on my computer) shows the track information for. I listen at work through my computer and when I go through the celticradio.net website and click on the provided “click here to listen now” button, it takes me to http://celticradio.one/free_web_player.html . This link is still playing the Radionomy stream (for me at least). Is there another link I need to go through because when I search for Highlander Radio on SonixFM.com it plays the same stream as Radionomy (It also states that Namibia is the country of origin for the station on SonixFM) |

I am a little confused here… I use the “listen now” link on celticradio.net to listen to the music. That link still directs me to Radionomy were the track information for the song playing differs from the track information that celticradio.net provides on the website. (Radionomy’s information is correct for the streaming song) Because of the discrepancy, I went directly to SonixFM.com to find the correct stream, but the streaming song there is the same song playing on Radionomy.
Has the transition for the main channel to SonixFM.com not yet occurred, or am I doing something incorrectly? I am in the USA if the location matters for streaming purposes.

Dance master Patrick O’Dea will be in Jackson, MS for a set dancing workshop on Monday, May 16. Based in County Roscommon, Ireland, he is one of the best-known and all-around BEST instructors of sean-nós, (old style) dancing in the world today with a very special knowledge of traditional Irish dancing. Patrick comes through Jackson from Ireland once a year or so, and taking a workshop with him is a direct connection to the Irish dancing masters who have kept this art form and its culture alive for centuries. He’s also a longtime friend of the Jackson Irish Dancers, and we love his visits!
For teens and adults; come one, come all!

I just saw Scythian preform at the North Texas Irish Festival this past weekend (NTIF in Dallas TX is always the first full weekend in March for those who may be interested, and it’s a great festival to attend!). I first came across their music when I heard their song Hey Mama Ya on Highlander Radio years ago. It’s a catchy tune with a little Celtic mixed with a little Zydeco and a whole lot of fun. When I saw their name on the performers list at NTIF, I made sure to check them out. They are a high energy band with a great sound and infectious personality. They play an eclectic mix of music with a strong bent towards the Celtic genera. I hope they are able to come back again next year. I thoroughly enjoyed their performances!
It’s a real pleasure to be able to listen to artists like Scythain, Ed Miller, Dervish and many many others on the Celtic Radio stations then be able to see them preform live. Keep up the good work! Sláinte
