There.  Hopefully that'll make things easier on Macfive.To show you what I mean by the reflections having a pinkish border. Thanks a lot, desertrose. As Keltic said, Jasper is in the Alberta Rockies, about three hours west of Edmonton. It's very humbling out there. If you want to know just how small you are, just stand at the foot of one of those mountains. I'll post some more for you.  Angela and I went to Calgary, over to Canmore, to Banff, up to Lake Louise, then to Jasper for a vacation road trip two years ago. We camped in our tent everywhere we went, and it was one of the best times I've ever had. It was quite hard to go back to work after that. Last September Angela's company sent everyone to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge for the weekend. Very posh, and quite relaxing. It's like it's own town in there. The lodges base at $500 a night, so it's not something we could afford to do on our own, but would love to, of course. This was the view from our lodge porch. Could you imagine waking up in the morning to that? Sipping coffee on the log porch watching squirels and listening to nothing but the birds. |

| Truth be told, and I get flack for this ALL the time, I've only caught one fish in my entire life. One piddly little lake trout. Never got into it. Growing up with ADD, it's not easy to stand still for very long and stare at the rippling river without running into the woods or down the stream. But I do know quite a few people who are heavy into hauling fish out of the water. My brother, for instance. And if you're going to St. Mary's, you'll be able to find a guide easier than dropping a hat. There are a billion rivers and streams on that little peninsula, so there's lots of fishing to do whether you want a guide or not. Here's a picture of the IceFields, between Lake Louise and Jasper. It was taken with a Kodak Fun Saver, so the quality's crap. Our Minolta was under the weather. |

Yes, I have done lots of commissioned pet portraits. In fact, I spent two years just doing them alone. Could not even get to my other genre, Native American and desert wildlife, at the time. |

| I don't think I posted this in this thread, but here's the old Minolta I use. I'm sure it cost a small fortune in its day, but I picked it up for about $100 Canadian on Ebay after our old one, of the same make and model that Ange got at a flea market for $50, started leaking light. Repairs would have cost around $250-500, so buying another was the only option. At least the first one had a wide angle 28:1 lens, and the new one (actually older) had the original 50:1. Plus, we've got a spare XG-1 body, if we ever damage the case. Something about these old 35mm SLRs that digitals just can't touch. |

| Hello Annham. That's at the Jasper Park Lodge (obviously) in Jasper, Alberta. One of the wonderful Rocky Mountain towns that hosts breathtaking views and world class skiing. The lodges there start at $500 a night, and that's for a strip lodge, with three cabins each. That porch view shot is literally the scene from where we sat and read in the afternoons, or sipped coffee (among other things ). Angela's boss payed for everyone and a guest to take the long weekend there. One of my all time favorite weekends, needless to say. |

| Some fullo brought in this 1931 Ferrari Grand Prix race car replica to my brothers' shop. The only thing is, the first Ferrari wasn't built until 1940, and even then, it was forced, by Alfa Romeo, to cary the name Auto Avia 815. The first car to wear Enzo's name was the Type 125, (125 was the size of all 12 cylinders, coming in at a whopping 1500cc ), and that came to life as a pure race car in 1947. This is actually a VW 1600cc air cooled chassis with, what appears to be, an old Alfa body, since they were producing back in '27. Or a Fiat, who was in the game since 1905, when it won the Congo de Ventoux hill climb. That car had a 16.2L (16,200cc) beast. It's funny to look at, because it has this huge nose, with nothing in it but a battery and gas tank, where anything from a huge inline 4 to a tiny screaming V12 would have been at home. It's fully fiberglass and has all the weight directly over the rear transaxle. Donuts anyone? Could you imagine the fun you could have with this sort of machine. I'll make a thread in the garage so you can see some other views. This car is one true bastard, but it's one of the coolest things I've ever seen.  |

| This shot was taken from our road trip around the Alberta Rockies. We found this place just east of Jasper. Not far from the Park boundary. The entire clump of hills here are sand deposits mounted high up on rock outcroppings. Sort of like sand dunes that don't move. It feels like walking on the beach in the middle of a mountain delta. | Aren't you just overflowing with encouragement. Thanks Rose. Here's another repost, since it got eaten too. The Sisters Well, not really sisters. Just one. Ivy, who is my real sister, is the one in the middle, Angela, my wife, is on the end, and Buffy, my beloved pup, is .... well, that's pretty obvious. We were waiting for about 45 minutes for the sun to go down behind the hills that encompas the Bras D'or lake in Cape Breton, a peninsula off the tip of New Scotland, my home. It used to be an island, until they put the causway in. The point was to wait until that time where the red sun lights up the bottom of the clouds, and reflect over the lake and give a dark silouette of the hills. I look to my right, and this is what I see. Before they had a chance to even notice what I was doing, I prepped the shot and took it. I think it came out better than the one we were waiting for. On a side note, it's amazing how many people will stop to talk, or point out something interesting you should take a picture of, when you have a tripod. |

Thank you so much, Cori, and Anne (sorry I didn't see this one right away Anham  ). We spent the better part of the day just walking around the woods by this lake. There were brooks and streams everywhere, and moss covered stones. You can rent a canoe there as well. I wish we had time for that, but we also had the dog with us, and that's just not an option. |

| And doubtlessly THE worst picture I've taken since my teens, but the scene is cool, so I'll share it. It was taken on that same hike, and I crawled down into this crevice looking down to the lake. You can't tell from here, but my head is about three or four feet lower than soles of Ange's feet. I have no idea why I did this, because I'm incredibly afraid of heights. Oh, and it's not my picture, (obviously), I just set it up. The one I took of Ange and the dog is much better. ................  Why didn't I just post that one? |

I took the shot of Ange and the dog from the same perspective, but I had wished she were farther down. I wasn't going to ask her to do that though, so for the sake of a cool shot, I did it myself.  I scared myself a few times, both crawling down, and scrambling back up. That's some VERY loose gravel there.  And thank you, susieq. I'm going to find a few more of these brook pictures. I know there's at least one more good shot around of the water. |

| This is the '05 Lamborghini Murciellago Roadster that was at the Edmonton Motor Show here two weekends ago. VERY..... nice..... car Anyway, I discovered why you need a flash indoors, or at least 800iso film. But it was the first time I got to use my macro lens since messing around on Christmas day. That too was a mistake. I should have just stuck with the 1:28 fixed. Oh well. I still enjoy seeing the cars, which was the purpose of taking the pictures. I'll know better for next time. There's no such thing as too much light. |

| Thanks Rose. It really is an amazing automobile. Well, I'm enjoying it a lot. The only thing I need to work on is knowing the application of each piece of equipment. Indoors, always use the flash. Automotive, use a wider focal length than a macro can give you, because you want the whole car to be in focus, not just the front, or door. Trial and error, right? Hey, did you ever get your flash working on both cameras? |

| yep, that is what photography and art is all about and how we learn is by trial and error! I have had some of the best stuff I did come out because of error! LOL Well, I didn't get the flash to work on both cameras. I need to take it to a camera shop but that is an hour from me and I just have been too lazy to drive down there. However, I got my old Canon flash to work again and so I use that one on one camera and the new one I bought on eBay on the other camera. That way I have flashes on both cameras and different lenses on them too. So either way it works out and I am happy! |

Thanks everybody.  I appreciate the comments, a lot. Although, credit is hard to take when you're doing photography like this. It's more the job of a messenger than an artist. IS, I'm sure we'd all love to see that pic. Don't hold back on us, now.Rose, your words are humbling and so kind, as usual. Haldur, git'er done. There's a camera out there with your name on it. Stoirmeil, wow, thank you. And yes, I've done a few in b&w. I'm sure as I get more rolls developed, I'll find some more suitable for monochrome. | I see that it has been quite a while since I posted anything (pictures or words), so I chose a few of my favorites from the last year. They need to be processed yet, so the contrast is a tad hazy. This was taken at Victoria Park in Truro, Nova Scotia, in October. Angela was perfect in this, as was her outfit quite suitable.  Ange, being Ange.  A couple photo, of sorts.  The view of the same space, from the cliff opposite. I was literally on my arse/belly scrambling to the edge for this. Had to hang over the cliff a bit, holding a tree, just to get the nearer leaves and branches out of the shot.  A familiar photo from the other end of the country.  |

I was piling wood in the shop and saw this guy on the wall.... about six inches from a light bulb. Well, I knew the lighting wouldn't get any better. I'm really starting to feel the limitations of the stock lens, as this macro is as close as I could get. Still, I think it takes up just the right amount of frame. The funny thing is he's (and I assign gender without proper knowledge ) actually vertical. |

| Oh, thanks Rose! I haven't been in this thread in a while. Anyway, I haven't added anything in a while, so here are a few shots of the 'pond' across the road from our house, and Pringles Lake, which is about two minutes away on my daily commute. I had the Canon mounted on my tripod and ran out to catch these before leaving for work. There were bucket-loads of dew on the weeds, though, so I arrived at work with my pants soaked half way up my thighs. These are stock and un-doctored photos, so forgive me if the colours don't exactly pop.    I really like this one. Believe it or not, that is the moon, and yes, those are stars. I took these probably two hours after sunset with a 30second exposure.  These aren't spectacular photos, but they were fun to take and I enjoy them for their honesty. |

| Hi everybody. A very belated thank you again, Rose. These are a little less honest, but not much has changed other than some work with B/C and a bit of saturation (very little, the reds you see here are pretty much exactly what I saw, and no hue adjustments were made). I saw this just as I was pulling into our road last night and ran to get the camera.    |

| Thanks guys. Ange and I are taking our late anniversary hiking/camping trip this weekend and I'll hopefully have some new images to share. We're doing a hiking tour through Cape Breton (NW) now that the Celtic Colours Festival is on the go. The colours should be perfect. There's still about a third of the leaves that are still green, but should be all turned by the weekend. |

Yes, indeed. In fact it seems to me, looking at these, that if you couldn't get the Scottish highlands, Cape Breton would not be a poor substitute. . . You've got a wonderful eye, oldraven, as I've said before, but you also have some stunning subject matter to work with. Those rock-and-water shots remind me of a verse from Willam Cullen Bryant's poem "March" (timely, no?): " . . . Then sing aloud the gushing rills and the wild brooks from frost set free, that lightly leaping down the hills renew their journey to the sea . . ." (I had one of those sixth-grade teachers that made us memorize things ) |

Did you know they are geologically related of old, my dear? The top half of Scotland above the diagonal rift came in from the west on a shifting tectonic plate many millions of years ago, all the way from the vicinity of Nova Scotia, and ground to a stop on the southern half. Everything about it is different from the south: the stone, the formations, the life it will support -- everything. Even the kind of Scotsman it will produce, as I firmly believe. A Highlander for me. |

Now that you have mentioned it no wonder there is such an affinity between Scotland and Canada.I know I should not do this but just one last little note for glaswegian. Up until the 1960s' there was more Scots-Gaelic spoken in Cape Breton that there was in Scotland. In certain parts it was the only language spoken. Camac. |

| Absolutely true, Camac. But it has since suffered the same fate and has been fully replaced by English as the first language of all Cape Breton residents. Thankfully, our Province has put a lot of resources into reviving the language by promoting Gaelic classes for all ages after hours in select schools, as well as day time classes for the children to get them acquainted with the speech their parents let go. St. Andrews Elementary School in Antigonish Co. is one example of this, and the students had a float in the parade for the Antigonish Highland Games where they brandished posters with Gaelic phrases, greetings, etc., and sang Gaelic songs. There is also St. Anne's Gaelic College in the heart of the Cape Breton Highlands, where many aspects of traditional Gaelic culture are studied. Last, but certainly not least, Antigonish Co. has added a second language to all of their road signs on high traffic highways. This is probably the most important, as it is something we can see every day, though I'm sure one in 200 can properly pronounce the names (myself included, as I've only begun to understand the phonetic structures of the speech). Well, all I can say is thank you so very much. Coming into this thread gives me both a huge boost to my ego, (which probably doesn't need the help), and joy at knowing others get to see the beauty I've been lucky enough to capture and share. I've said it before, the only art involved with nature photography is in trying to show it in its' best light. It's already there. Valpal, any chance to to to the Island I'll take. That being said, it turns out those photos DO have a bit of touching up. I didn't remember doing it, but going back on the office PC, (I use it primarily for photography now and photoshop work for clients. Day to day, we use the laptop.), I saw that they were doctored. I'm just now learning about colour manipulation, though I'm not sure how to keep these darker areas (river) from hazing out without contrasts turning the entire section black. I've read a bit about layering the photos, so you can take two identical (tripod) photos at different settings and paste them back together later. One photo for the trees and sky, another for the river and rocks. Maybe someday I'll have the time to try that out.   To give this photo some perspective, this is shot about 35-40 degrees from vertical, not horizontal. You can see a ledge below with trees growing on it. This is taken from the same height as the other shots looking over at the Cabot Trail highway. Those trees farther below.... I couldn't even guess how far down they are. Try not to get vertigo. There are no railings here, but there is a $5000 fine attached to taking one step off of the boardwalk built there.  |

These were taken at Uisge (OOSH-ka) Ban Falls, near Baddeck in Cape Breton. We took the kids and dogs out there for a hike on Monday. It was too nice of a day to stay inside, and we wanted to do something to celebrate some recent good news. It may look cold, but it wasn't in the least. The kids' snow pants were soaked by the time we got back to the car. The whole time we were walking on 2 to 3 feet of hard packed snow, so the bridge railings were only up to Seamus's waist. The dogs were there to deter the Coyotes (a girl was attacked and killed last year on the trail those photos above were taken from. The Skyline Trail.). Anyway, since you can't really see the upper falls without climbing gear (ice climbing gear this time of year. You could see where people had been climbing the lower falls.), and the lower falls were just one big chunk of ice, there weren't any photos of the falls worth sharing. I got some shots from behind a wall of ice, which were interesting.  I don't know what happened here. It must have happened when I transferred the image to the flash drive, because it's like this everywhere but the original on my desktop.  These are just to show how damn big the falls really are, and also the size of the gorge.    |

| Greetings, Old Raven! It has been a long time since we heard from you. Or is it me? Cause I haven't been too active on here myself. I love CR, but so much going on in my life all the time I forget to visit. Your photos are wonderful! I personally don't know how you live in snow. Been there and done that and I hated it! Well, I was fine as long as I could stay inside, but I sure hate driving in that stuff. I was also impressed with how big your kids are now! Wow! What a shock! I bet they keep you busy. Great looking dogs to keep the coyotes away. Are they both German Shepherds? Great seeing your new photos and know that you all are doing well. Blessings! |

Thanks to you both.  It really wasn't cold at all. The temperatures were between 6-10 (42-50) degrees that day. It was almost warm enough to get that heavy fog that comes from fast melting snow. I only had my jacket liner on, and Ange was wearing a simple hoodie. Plus, it was a 3km walk. Here at the house, there is no snow left in the yard, just the ditches. Then again, what I consider hot is probably sweater weather for you, Rose. Seamus couldn't do much walking, though, due to the uneven surface. Coira had such a good time. We pretended it was a treasure hunt, and at every trail map, we would talk about 'clues'. She wasn't that impressed that her treasure ended up being a frozen waterfall, though. A natural treasure. She was expecting candy, I'm sure, since we do these hunts at home sometimes, with a map of the property and a box of treats at the end of the 'trail'. It took her about 30 seconds to get over that, though, and start enjoying herself at the destination. She was sliding down the banks on her but with Ange. Her little photo shoot gave us some gems. Most were of her making ridiculous faces. |

| Oh, and as for the dogs. Buffy is a pure-bred German Police, and Ozwald (Oz) is a Stafordshire mix. They were both good, but Oz shocked me with how well he behaved. He's a bit prone to chasing anything that might even think about moving. I was very proud of them. |

| Uisge Ban -- isn't that "White Water"? These are lovely, but so cold . . . that one from behind the icicles is interesting. There's a beautiful rhythm in that first one looking upstream over the rocks and into the trees-- it looks like it should be an engraved frontispiece in an old book of poetry or fairy tales. That boy's eyes are just astonishing. They haven't changed at all. Both those kids are going to be real heartbreakers -- you will have your hands full! |

It's funny, but it sounded like you were using the future tense there. I'm starting to see my Dad in him now. Those eyes are recessive in both Angela and myself, but they're very much like my brother Jimmie's. Some days they're cold blue, others they're flat grey. In that photo above they're the grey. It seems the name Seamus was very appropriate (my Dad is a James, as is my nephew, who is James III). |
