They've got some good songs Can't say I'm a huge fan, but I've found enough songs I like that if I could find them on the same CD, I'd certainly be ordering it. Haven't found any one CD that has made it to my to-buy list yet. Still looking.

GBS is a fun band, but in my opinion little more than a good bar band. I know they don't aim to be hardcore celtic, and it is a good thing as there is only one solid musician in the group. Nonetheless, they are okay, but I wouldn't put them on the same level as the Rankins were, or the Barra MacNeils.
I like their cd "Up" alot, but I can't say I like them as much as some other bands. They have good c.d's but they don't play any instrumentals which is what I like more than anything. But if they are on or come to town to play, I'll def. be there listening.

You've found another fan here!! Their live energy dwarfs the Barra's in concert. Musically, you can't compare Great Big Sea with the Barra MacNeills or the Rankins because it would be like comparing Led Zeppelin with Harry Connick, Jr. Different styles for different folks!!

Keltic, I am surprised. Having seen both bands (the Barras many times and GBS twice), I wouldn't say their live energy dwarfs the Barras. GBS does appeal more to a half-drunken audience, or a pop-music type crowd, but for dancing, foot stomping, or for listening to a more pure ceilidh type band, the Barras pack plenty of punch - especially at one of their outdoor concerts back in Cape Breton. Instrumentally, comparing the two bands is like comparing Brittany Spears to Ricky Skaggs (or Neil Peart, if you are a drummer). Anyway, I don't want to argue the point, just felt the Barras deserve their due. The best way to find out is experience them live.
Don't get me wrong... I'm not putting the Barra's down. I have seen them a number of times as well and they are a great band. I just find that the times that I've seen Great Big Sea their energy level was much higher than at the shows that I've seen the Barra MacNeills play and again, they are two different styles of music, aimed at different crowds.
I must say I was surprised to see them as part of Highlander Radio. I never thought of them as being even remotely Celtic. I put them in the Canadian Folk Rock category (yes..it's a category I made up). I think they are very similar in style to Carbon Leaf, though, whom I just recently discovered.
I like what I 've heard. I've got "Something Beautiful" and "Sea of No Cares" and they're both fun.
