The Scotsman, July 27, 2006: FACT OF THE DAY On this day in 1689 John Graham of Claverhouse, better known to some as "Bonnie Dundee" - and to others as "Bluidy Clavers" because of his enthusiastic oppression of Covenanters - led an army of Jacobite Highlanders to victory against King William's army of largely Lowland Scots led by Maj Gen Hugh MacKay of Scourie - a Highlander - at the Battle of Killiecrankie. Claverhouse himself was fatally wounded. For more information on the infamous Claverhouse, see: http://heritage.scotsman.com/timelines.cfm?cid=1&id=39992005 For those who like period fiction, I can recommend a related novel for young adults (but don't let that stop you -- it's not at all childish) by Rosemary Sutcliff titled "Bonnie Dundee." Matter of taste, but if this portrait runs true, he was bonnie. http://www.sirwalterscottway.fsnet.co.uk/int-14.jpg |
