Camo and canvas kilts are a mainstay for some of the military guys who also participate in Scottish Athletics. I'm a bit late on being able to see the article that started this thread, as it's no longer posted on the web, but you can find these alternative kilts at Utilikilts.com. I use a camo kilt myself for athletics, and I wear my family tartan when I compete in bagpiping.
