I just came back from buying groceries. My husband is outside working on the deck so I thought I would buy 2 drinks at McDonald's. Their credit card machine was down. Talk about an eerie feeling.
But it did get me thinking about what I would stockpile if I didn't have the luxury of going to a store very often.
What would you stockpile? Be serious if you want or enjoy a good laugh, we need both now.

Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.

In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.
John Muir
"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."
I have purchased non perishable food and I have about 25 gallons of water. I plan to increase both till I have about 6 months worth. I bought a pellet stove and one and a half year supply of pellets. I have stock piled some medication. Especially the critical ones. I have silver coins and have bought silver bars (one oz) which should be in spendable amounts in the $14.00 to 25.00 range. Barter items will be on my list soon and a small generator to keep the pellet stove working. I have a power inverter that will operate it from a car battery too. I have a freezer full of food that I will trade for goods I feel I need. Oh and get a Flu and Pneumonia shot this year!
There are more things but it takes time to accumulate these things.
I take it you're not talking about beer and cigarettes. Seriously, one of the most difficult to obtain to stockpile is prescrition medicines. If you do manage a multi month supply, be sure to follow the "first in, first out" rule, in other words rotate the stock every month to keep it reasonably fresh.
In the past good scotch and smokes would have been the priority. for 15 years I have given up both. I can easily get a 90 day supply of medications. By paying for the whole prescription, my MD will allow more. I have a "Seal-a-Meal" to vacuum seal the meds.
I suspect if we do not go into hyper inflation, the stockpiling may not be necessary. We will see some tough times but money will still have value.
What a serious bunch we have. Yes, we do need to take this with concern, but where are my friends' sense of humor. I thought I would get a couple of good laughs. Come on you guys, don't disappoint me.
Patch you mention a pellet stove. I'm not familiar with this. Is it like a sterno stove that you can backpack with?
I am with those who say they will give up cigarettes. I don't smoke but I do know that can be a very expensive habit. A good bottle of scotch could be used for medicinal purposes no?
Dogshirt I will definitely have a hunter's orange vest on around your area!
With all this talk of Doom and Gloom and if Armaggedon (in any form) is just around the corner. I will stockpile absolutely nothing. I will see to my daughters safety and then I will go into Toronto to Ground Zero sit down with my right hand raised and clenched, middle finger pointing up and wait.
It seems I spend a good deal of my time with my middle finger in the air anyway.
Slàinte,
Patch
Patch;
I know what you mean. If and when the afore mentioned day should arrive and my remains if any are interned. I told my girls my headstone is to be the finger and inscribed below, "NILS CARBORUNDUM ILLEGITIMATE" (DON'T LET THE B.....DS GRIND YOU DOWN).
I started my stockpile a number of years ago, with a years supply of Devil Doges…You know these days there shelf life is somewhere around ten years, give or take a year or so. I also have plenty of water, not for drinking, but for use in making bath tub Gin. Bring it on….I’m ready.
