A few weeks ago, I caught the tail end of an episode of Monarch of the Glen, and it caught my interest. I decided to go ahead and record a full episode. My wife and I really enjoyed it, so we decided to rent the first season from Netlix. I must say, that it is one of the most wonderful drama series I've ever watched. It's made me fall in love Scotland. I've really never seen much of Scotland, and this show has opened my eyes to it's awesome beauty.

The show is very well made, and is very captivating. The Glenbogle Estate is (the fictitious estate in the show) is breathtaking. We should be getting season two in the mail this week. Unfortunately, only season 1 & 2 have been released thus far, yet they are airing season 6 on BBC. hopefully more will be released soon, and we can get our fix. smile.gif

I really have a strong desire to travel to Scotland now, in addition to Ireland.

For anyone interested, here is the real http://www.ardverikie.com/

That sounds great, Brian! I will check it out soon - I am trying to whittle down my Netflix list a little more before adding anything to it. Some others that I have found hilarious are "Vicar of Dibley", and "As Time Goes By" - I think that is what it is called, with Dame Judi Dench. Great show. I also love the show "Keeping Up Appearances".

I love The Vicar. So how many movies in your Netflix Queue? We have 173!

You won't regret it if you do rent it. Let me know what you think of it when you do. smile.gif

Jeesh! I have 16!!! I whittled that down from 45, but 173??!! Wow, you are going to be set for life, man! I will definately let you know!

I love Monarch, I've seen all the episodes to date and bought series one on DVD.

Duncan (Hamish Clarke) is my hero biggrin.gif and it was really him running around in a kilt that led to me doing the same and chucking away all my trousers.

Such a shame he's sold off is kilt!

I just recently read on the BBC site that he was keeping it. hmm.

Posted by: Tassiecelt 11-Oct-2004, 08:45 PM
well he must have bought another kilt, he autioned off his kilt and boots at a Scottish restaurant a couple of months ago.

Good news tho', MOTG would not be the same without Duncan.

Posted by: MacAibhistin 11-Oct-2004, 08:54 PM
I really enjoy it too! It always bugged me that Hector, Molly, and Archie have such an English accent. My favourite characters are Duncan and Lexie (she's a babe!). I'd love to see more interaction with Scottish locals in the show. But it is a cute and fun show. Our PBS station shows it but we are two seasons behind, so if anything major has happened, please don't give it away here. wink.gif

Caution...this may be a spoiler to some....if so...read no further!

I must have assumed he was keeping it, because of what he had said: "'They are giving me the kilt and the leather jacket and the sporran. And I definitely want them because they are Duncan. I was going to buy an old wooden dressmaker's dummy for them as those clothes are also part of my own history. But then I though I would just look like a complete a**e having my own costume on a model in my front room." I did not know he sold them. Was it for charity? If that's the case, I can understand.

Duncan is one of the best characters. I also like Golly and Molly. I've only seen Paul in one episode, but I think I'm going to like him too.

I can't believe I missed this thread! I love Monarch of the Glen! I have season 1 on DVD and have seen most of the episodes. the latter episodes I have missed. Like what happened to Archie's half brother and then Lexie? I don't seem to get it on my telly anymore! sad.gif

Posted by: Avonlea22 07-Nov-2004, 11:42 AM
Yay! Another fan. smile.gif

Does anyone know what kind of dog Useless is in the, I think, second season and on? Is he a Brittany Spaniel?

Posted by: CelticRose 07-Nov-2004, 11:49 AM
I do think it is a Brittany Spaniel, but would have to look at the series again. Series 2 on DVD is coming out soon you know!

Posted by: Avonlea22 07-Nov-2004, 11:58 AM
Series 2 is already out on DVD. Do you mean series 3?

Posted by: CelticRose 07-Nov-2004, 12:06 PM
What???????????? Series 2 is on DVD? The last time I checked it was not! Well, I best get on the ball here and order it! Thanks for enlightening me! smile.gif

Posted by: dragonboy3611 08-Nov-2004, 10:18 AM
I must regret I have never seen it.... sad.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Nov-2004, 01:09 PM
dragonboy! Do you get BBC America? It comes on there.

I had to go back and re-read this thread cause I somehow missed the first post, Brian that you had purchased Series 2 on DVD. What is Netfix? unsure.gif

Brian, when is the show airing now? They did have the new series running on Sunday evenings. Is it still running then? My favorite character is Duncan! Can't believe he sold his kilt! sad.gif

Brian, when is the show airing now?

http://www.netflix.com is an online DVD rental company. We use them a LOT! We watch an average of 3 movies a week from them. Check them out...they are worth it. They have more movies and television shows than any local movie store will ever have.

As far as when it airs, it all depends on your PBS station. Here, it's on Monday nights and Saturday mornings. I record it on the VCR 6am Saturday. smile.gif Trust me, I'm not getting up that early to watch it.

Check the web site of your local PBS station to see when it airs.

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Nov-2004, 02:17 PM
Thanks a lot, Brian! I will do that!

BBC? What is that?

Posted by: Avonlea22 08-Nov-2004, 03:18 PM
BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation. They have an import station here in the U.S. that plays British Programming.

Definately check out the show if you get the chance.

I started watching Monarch of the Glen just today. It came on BBC on Demand in our region. So I could watch 5 Episodes in the row. That was fun. I put it already on my christmas list so I can watch it all the time. And it will keep me busy in the time that my husband is gone overseas.

Describe the show "Monarch of the Glen" television program. We don't get it here in Georgia so it would be nice to hear more....it's evidently offered on DVD?

Annabelle

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Nov-2004, 05:46 PM
Oh but Annabelle you can get it in Georgia. My best friend who lives in Georgia gets it and watches it faithfully. You just have to have BBC America and as Brian said PBS, but she watches it on BBC America.

Monarch of the Glen is about a Scottish family and is filmed in Scotland. It is about the Monarch of the family who has gotten too old to manage the estate so they call in their eldest son....albeit they trick him in to doing so.....who then lives in England to come manage it all. It is a wonderful family show.......full of comedy and drama! I think you would really love it! I just ordered my Series 2 DVD today!

Would you get it on Cable? Lol, I live in Upstate NY!

Posted by: CelticRose 08-Nov-2004, 06:28 PM
Yes you would, dragonboy, if your cable network that your parents subscribed to it that also includes BBC America and/or PBS.

Posted by: Annabelle 08-Nov-2004, 06:31 PM
Thanks Rose I'll start looking for it. Sounds like a good program to watch! I'll let you know if I find it.

If not I'll buy the DVD's.

Another Monarch of the Glen fan here. Unfortunately I have not been able to find it this season. It used to be on daily at 4pm and the new episodes were on Sunday eve at 6. I was afraid that it was no longer airing. Am so glad to find out that it is still on, even if I haven't been able to locate it. I will be searching for it's time slot here in Kentucky.

Sounds like a great show. Unfortunately, I don't think my PBS station carries it and I'm too far in "the sticks" for cable. sad.gif I'll watch for it, maybe I'll get lucky. smile.gif

I think that Monarch of the Glen is one of the best shows on TV. I look forward to watching it each week. Thankfully Dish Network carries the BBC. thumbs_up.gif

Ojkay, Netflix sent Monarch of the Glen. It is pretty good. I am not used to serious serials. Here in America, there really aren't any great weekly shows that don't have sex, violence or stupidity rampant in them. So it took some getting used to, but I will be checking out the second season soon : )

Is the first show on the DVD the actual first show of the series? If Brian hadn't explained it all to me, then I would have been a bit confused.

Posted by: CelticRose 22-Nov-2004, 02:06 PM
Hi Susie! MOTG gets better! I wasn't particularly fond of Series 1 myself as I did not like Katrina.

The first show on the DVD 1 is the first of the series. DVD 1 should be Series 1. I love Series 2. Hope you get that soon! I ordered my Series DVD 2 and it is supposed to be shipped to me soon. If you can, Susie, try to rent them all. It is a drama and comedy all in one! And thank goodness I too have Dish Network so I can watch it on BBC America!

Posted by: susieq76 22-Nov-2004, 02:19 PM
I sure will, Rose! Thanks for the recommendation smile.gif

Posted by: Avonlea22 30-Nov-2004, 06:36 PM
Susie, have you watched season 2 yet? If so, what do you think?

We're still eagerly anticipating the release of season 3.

Posted by: CelticRose 01-Dec-2004, 04:50 PM
Brian, any word on when Season 3 will be out on DVD?

Posted by: susieq76 01-Dec-2004, 04:57 PM
I haven't Brian. Sadly, I forgot! But I am adding it to my queue now...

Posted by: Avonlea22 02-Feb-2005, 01:15 PM
Well...according to Amazon, the next season is being released on May 17th!!

Posted by: susieq76 02-Feb-2005, 02:55 PM
Okay, I finally added it to my queu, and it should be here in the next few weeks or so! I will let ya'll know what I think of it when I get done watching it. May seems an awful long time from now, doesn't it?

Posted by: CelticRose 02-Feb-2005, 05:34 PM
Oh! How exciting, Brian! That is great news. By that time I should have seen the first two Seasons I have now! rolleyes.gif

If you get a chance too. Look for Hamish MacBeth on BBCA on Monday evenings. Very good show set in Scotland. You can't get the series on DVD, but it is going to restart the series on February 14th and I am going to record it.

Posted by: Monarch's Own 02-Feb-2005, 07:20 PM
Well I got season 1 and will be getting season 2 soon and as soon as season 3 comes out it will end up also in my DVD collection LOL
