My wife has tried this many times, I really love it.
VEGETARIAN HAGGIS
Originally from Dan Ellingworth [email protected] sent to Veggies Unite! 2oz rolled oats 2oz pinhead oatmeal 2oz mixed chopped nuts 2 oz margarine 1 large carrot 4oz mushrooms 1 large onion small can kidney beans (drained) 2 oz vegetarian suet 1/2 teaspoon yeast extract 1 tablespoon (or more!) whisky 1 teaspoon (at least) freshly ground black pepper juice 1/2 lemon (or 1 lime) 3 teaspoons of dried mixed herbs 1. Melt half the margarine in an ovenproof saucepan / casserole. Add oats, oatmeal and nuts and cook for 3 minutes. Put in bowl.
2. Chop carrot, mushrooms onion and kidney beans finely (food processor very handy here!). Melt rest of margarine, add chopped veg, and cook for another 2 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients, and the oat mixture. Cook for 5 minutes.
3. Transfer to medium oven for 40 minutes.
Traditionally, serve with "bashet neeps" (mashed swede) and "mashet tatties" (mashed potatoes) and copious amounts of whisky. Also goes well with roast onions (put in the oven 10 minutes before the haggis). (The fat content can be reduced by halving (or removing) the suet. If this is done, check it isn't getting too dry, and add some veggie stock if neccessary.)
Also traditionally served on Jan 25th (Robert Burns Birthday) with some suitably poor poetry!

Some how I just can't place the words "vegetarian" and "haggis" in the same mouth full of words! I believe you it is good, but can it be called true haggis? LOL!

Given that haggis is basically made up of sheep innards, it is literally impossible (not figuratively impossible, LITERALLY impossible) to make a non-meat version of haggis.
In the same way, it's impossible to have vegetarian steak, vegetarian beef stew, and vegetarian chicken fingers.
I could add beef to vegetarian lasagna and still call it vegetarian lasagna, but we know it's really not.
I'm not pooh-poohing your vegetarianism, I'm just questioning whether you can call this haggis.

I understand, but "we are not alone", well known scottish haggis makers MacSween now produce vegetarian haggis.
This is from their site:
A CHALLENGE WAS ISSUED by the Scottish Poetry Library for their opening ceremony in 1984 - Would Mr Macsween make a vegetarian haggis? A satisfactory recipe was devised and widespread interest after the event, encouraged production on a commercial scale. The vegetarian haggis was launched on the market to cries of horror and amazement - the poems and letters are still flowing and it is now 'Vegetarian Society Approved'.
As with all vegetarian products, they only profess to offer a tasty, healthy and similar tasting alternative for those who for health or moral reasons choose not to eat meat.
Haha, veggies unite! I always wondered what haggis tasted like when I was eating meat, but knowing what was in it, never got up the nerve to try any. Same thing goes for the headcheese that my mom and grandma were so fond of. Meh. I'm a wuss, I guess.
But this sounds great, I'll definately be giving it a try!

But it not be Haggis if it don't have the meats and the stomach! Political correctness does not apply to foods!
Vegetables are just that vegetables and no way can they even resemble the true food called haggis.
All I am gonna say on that!
Hi Guys I just don't think I could eat the stuff. My Dad was a butcher for 45 years and he liked to eat head cheese Oh My goodness, nope, nope, nope,. Just couldn't do that or cows tongue...
