I tend to think of anything by Peter Beresford Ellis as good starting points. Two that I like are "The Celts: a Hisory," and "A Brief history of The Druids." Elllis has been criticized by some for being too favorable to the Celts, and for too much of a bias against the Romans. Personally, I tend to think his analysis tends to be well-reasoned.

Yes, Peter Beresford Ellis is a good start. Here are a couple I have read:

The Celtic Empire: The First Millennium of Celtic History 1000 BC - 51 AD by Peter Beresford Ellis

The Druids by Peter Beresford Ellis

I just looked through my bookshelves, and I have these two books:

A History of Wales by John Davies
Scotland: The Story of a Nation by Magnus Magnusson

Both are good sources for the history of those individual countries.

Try "The Historical Atlas of The Celtic World". It clears up a lot of history and offers a very easy to understand explanation for many trends and events over the last 7000 years of Celt history.

Well, not strictly related to the Celts, at least not all of it, but I came to consider this book essential in understanding the construction of "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Europe" which, after all, is the geographical environment housing the Celts.
The book is:

* Facing the Ocean: The Atlantic and Its Peoples, 8000 BC to AD 1500'', by Barry Cunliffe, OUP, 2001.

Cunliffe has plenty of books dedicated to the Celts alone, but this one I've just mentioned puts everything into context (IMHO) smile.gif

Myths and Symbols in Pagan Europe -Hilda Roderick Ellis Davidson

It includes a study of Scandanavian cultures as well, but there is a lot of valuable scholarly info about the Celts in it.

I also recommend Celtic Gods and Heroes -Marie-Louise Sjoestedt

Great introduction to Celtic (especially Irish) mythology.

The book I started with was: "The Celts: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)" by Barry Cunliffe.

These have been recommended to me for follow-up:

"The Celts" by T. G. E. Powell; and
"The Ancient Celts" by Barry Cunliffe.
