Tell us all! Mine is Loreena McKennitt, especially "Bonny Portmore". Irish Rovers though are a close 2nd . |
Posted by: MDF3530 05-Feb-2003, 05:55 PM |
You know, you can reply to this thread. BTW, look to your left. I'm no longer King of Scotland. How appropriate that "Scotland The Brave" started playing on my MP3 player ! |
Posted by: MDF3530 07-Feb-2003, 07:43 PM |
Someone other than me please post here!!! |
Posted by: Maibh 07-Feb-2003, 10:36 PM |
I replied "other" (even though I have great love for many of those listed) because right now my favourite group is Flogging Molly. |
Posted by: Catriona 08-Feb-2003, 07:18 AM |
I'm the other 'other' who has voted! Capercaillie and Runrig are past favourites - but I have to be honest and say that I find Gaelic singing can get a bit, well, shall we say 'turgid' in tone?! That's the trouble with us Lallans' speakers - no romanticism in wur sowells... |
Posted by: MDF3530 08-Feb-2003, 05:48 PM |
I wonder who the other two votes (1 other for Ms. McKennitt & 1 other "other") were. |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 08-Feb-2003, 06:30 PM |
Count me to Loreena McKennitt, mike... i love that lassie's voice. For the other: maybe you forgot RunRig?? |
Posted by: maggiemahone1 09-Feb-2003, 07:32 AM |
I voted for the 'other.' I have no favorite, I just can't seem to make my mind up, Mike. There are so many good singers! maggiemahone1 |
Posted by: MDF3530 09-Feb-2003, 12:00 PM
No, I didn't. Just ran out of room for the choices. |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 09-Feb-2003, 04:57 PM |
oh, okay |
Posted by: Cabbagehome 10-Feb-2003, 11:39 AM |
OK! I voted. Like maggie, I like them all . I voted, for my first love. They were so much a part, of my teen years, that hubby and I sang the unicorn song, to our babys. My kids sing it, to their babys. When the group was in a lower Michigan city, my son took his kids to the bar/pub, to see them. The group was so pleased, to see the kids (ages 8 &5, who were more than happy to join right in), that they stayed late talking to them. How could I not vote for such a nice group?
|
Posted by: MDF3530 10-Feb-2003, 05:33 PM
I love that song. I even have it on MP3 on my computer. |
Posted by: Cabbagehome 12-Feb-2003, 11:41 AM |
MDF, I knew, there was something, about you, I liked. |
Posted by: barddas 13-Feb-2003, 01:22 PM |
WOW! So many to chose from. But I am going to have to go with the other vote as well. Some of my Favs that weren't listed are Silly wizard, Steeleye Span ( maddy prior wgat a voice!) Scartaglen, dougie maclean... I'll stop now.... Jason |
Posted by: RavenWing 20-Feb-2003, 01:17 PM |
I voted for Loreena, but I have to add that I LOVE: Clann an Drumma Galoglas (My uncle's band) |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 24-Feb-2003, 04:49 PM |
Silly Wizard definetly are good =) |
Posted by: FloweroftheWest 25-Feb-2003, 01:21 PM |
Would it surprise anybody that i voted for "other"? Though i have to say that i love Capercaille, The Corries and most Scottish Folk stuff as well. But nobody beats Runrig and "Dust" Thanks to the person who requested that |
Posted by: baldpiper 09-Mar-2003, 02:56 PM |
I voted for Clannandrumma. I think they are awesome. Saw them last year and looking forward to seeing them again this year. |
Posted by: cptfrancis 10-Mar-2003, 04:51 PM |
I had to vote for Christy Moore. It's from listening to his music that I've been hooked on Celtic music. He sorta jump started my passion for Celtic music. |
Posted by: tartangal 11-Mar-2003, 06:01 AM |
I agree. Christy is fab!!! He makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end when you hear him live. He just stands there with his guitar and enthralls. Jules |
Posted by: Gaelic Bread 16-Mar-2003, 05:30 PM |
Voted as I must, but just saw a group last night who would never make the poll. They are called The Hooligans, and were at a place in Philadelphia called Maggie O'Neills. WOW, what a show! I like bands that encourage folks to join-in on the singing, the piping, and the celtic dancing! I found their website this afternoon at www.hooligansusa.com. Interesting mix of traditional music and soccer hooligan attitude! |
Posted by: MDF3530 22-Mar-2003, 05:01 PM |
BTW, I just downloaded some more of Ms. McKennitt's songs. I love "Marrakesh Night Market". "The Mystic's Dream" is ok but not great. You all gotta admit the lady has songs that are quite entrancing.
|
Posted by: CelticAingeal 26-May-2003, 01:21 PM |
I have to agree with ye there, MDF3530....her songs are very entrancing. The thought and work she has put into creating some of them is really something too. |
Posted by: Keltic 26-May-2003, 07:08 PM |
Solas, Silly Wizard, De Danann, Niamh Parsons, Tannahill Weavers.... I better stop before I list my whole collection. Too many great bands to chose just one. |
Posted by: brettzky42 03-Jun-2003, 03:40 PM |
Right now I'm splitting my time between Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and The Hooligans. And Hadrian's Wall...Seven Nations...Ashley MacIsaac...whew! |
Posted by: brettzky42 03-Jun-2003, 06:38 PM |
Oh yeah, did I mention Gaelic Storm? Don't know who their fiddle player is, but they can rip a great Tam Lin Reel! |
Posted by: hilander1299 05-Jun-2003, 10:52 PM |
How about the Brobdingnagian Bards?? Excellent Irish/Scottish tunes!! |
Posted by: Macfive 06-Jun-2003, 07:31 AM
The Brobdingnagian Bards are an excellent duo from Texas!!! We have a number of their songs on the broadcast and they have been very supportive of our broadcast. Placing links on their site and providing us with a number of their CD's. In fact, I just heard from Mark a few weeks back. He is sending us their latest CD - Memories of Middle - coming soon on the broadcast! I am really looking forward to this one! Here is a link to their site for more information: http://thebards.net/ |
Posted by: Swanny 08-Jun-2003, 02:42 AM |
I'm new to the forum, just found it tonight. I voted "other" as my favorite is a group that performs primarily at American Colonial era living history events in the Eastern U.S.A., called "Father, Son and Friends". I may change my mind as I keep listening here, though. Swanny |
Posted by: maggiemahone1 09-Jun-2003, 10:36 AM |
Hi Swanny, If I'm not mistaken Father, Son and Friends performed at our firstever Celtic festival in Beckley WV in August of last year. They were great. BTW... I don't think I've said hi to you since you have joined Highlander Radio forum. H E L L O... maggiemahone1 |
Posted by: Madweasel 02-Jul-2003, 08:25 AM |
Ghah! Too many of my favorites up there to make a choice... One I'd like to see around on the playlist but haven't though, is Catherine-Ann MacPhee. Anyone else ever heard of her? She put out 3 albums that I know of (and own), between 1987 and 1994 - I'm still looking to find out if she did any more. Great voice, all her albums are in the Scots Gaelic, which for some reason seems hard to find generally. The albums, in no particular order: Cànan Nan Gàidheal (The Language of the Gael) Chi Mi'n Geamhradh (I see Winter) Catherine-Ann MacPhee sings Mairi Mhor Chime in if you have a clue what I'm talking about. -Madweasel |

Hi Difficult question but I vote to: Altan as group Mairi MacIness as singer Saludos |
Posted by: Donegal 15-Jul-2003, 03:17 AM |
By the way, Catherine is a great singer but she was already voted I think she only has the 3 albums you mentioned Saludos |
Posted by: tartangal 15-Jul-2003, 11:29 AM |
Altan are fantastic. I saw them live at celtic connections in Glasgow and they were wonderful . The singer has the sweetest voice. |
Posted by: QuiWanKenn 25-Jul-2003, 11:27 PM |
My favorite is "The Poxy Boggards" to bad that they only have one song here. |
Posted by: dober 30-Jul-2003, 03:50 PM |
I think Loreena McKennitt is great, but her music is hard to find in my area. |
Posted by: Mari 05-Aug-2003, 11:05 PM |
Emerald Rose, has to be one of the greatest Celtic Rock Groups around |
Posted by: Scatha Arzetyn 09-Aug-2003, 09:56 AM |
I voted 'Other'. My favourite's probably The Crossing, or Clannad. Most of the bands listed I've haven't heard yet. Anja II |
Posted by: craig 02-Sep-2003, 02:42 PM |
Out of the list I had to choose the Glengarry Bhoys. They always get everyone on their feet. I live in western New York and I get to see them often. A special mention must be made about a celtic rock band out of Buffalo, NY. Kilbrannan has a growing fan base and perform regularly in the Norhteast, primarily in New York State. Check them out at http://www.kilbrannan.com |

I'm new to this forum and new to the site (although i'vbe been listening to it for a few years now). I may be off here, but the first celtic CD I ever bought is still my favorite- Sons of Somerled. Steven McDonald does awesome work. His music is haunting and uplifting at the same time. He also throws in quite a bit of a history lesson when he can. I also like Gary Stadler-although he may be considered new age he is played on this site. He is one to listen to when you go to bed at night or just want to relax. Steve McDonald is who you listen to anytime you need an emotional jarring around. |
Posted by: Richard Bercot 03-Oct-2003, 12:26 PM |
I really do not know who is my favorite, but a couple I do Like that I have not seen listed are BARLEYCORN and FAIR ISLE FOLK. They have a sound that appeals to me. |
Posted by: Elspeth 03-Oct-2003, 09:10 PM |
I'm new as well, but I love the voices of Mary Black and Karen Matheson |
Posted by: Aaediwen 22-Oct-2003, 04:16 PM |
My vote, of course, had to go for Loreena McKennitt All of the music is stellar, but my #1 and #2 picks should be Loreena McKennitt and Heather Dale I certainly consider Gary Stadler as New Age, used <I> Fairy of the Woods </I> to relax after class in college, most of the time found myself falling asleep without meaning to. Nice stuff =) And the first insturmental I found that I could listen to. |
Posted by: MarinePaul 14-Jan-2004, 11:26 AM |
Well I guess I will add some others into the list. Karen Kasey, Mary Jane Lamond, Solas, Battlefield Band, Clannad. Instrumental wise I absolutely love Catriona MacDonald. Oh yeah; Leahy, Great Big Sea, and Natalie MacMaster. It is too hard for me to pick an all time favorite. I listen to different bands depending on the mood I am in, or want to be in wow, I just started clicking on some of these cool emoticons. I think I found the one for me, Paul |
Posted by: Lionel 14-Jan-2004, 12:18 PM |
Loreena Mackennitt, Karen Matheson and Sinead O'Connor for the female singers ! Runrig, Capercaillie for the bands. Great singers, great bands and wonderful music ! |
Posted by: silverdragon 14-Jan-2004, 12:53 PM |
Afro Celts, Wolfstone, Silly Wizard, Clann an Drumma, Clannad... Yah, that's me with all those Afro Celts requests... |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 14-Jan-2004, 02:09 PM |
voicewise i voted.. long time ago.. for loreena.. otherwise I wouldn't be able to decide, so much depends on my mood and on what I have available... |
Posted by: Losgann 14-Jan-2004, 02:31 PM |
Mine is Runrig. But I like Wolfstone and Great Big Sea too... |
Posted by: Lionel 15-Jan-2004, 11:58 AM |
Runrig ! Tiens comme c'est étrange Losgann ! J'aurais parié les Chieftains ou encore Alan Stivell ! |
Posted by: Losgann 15-Jan-2004, 01:21 PM |

Posted by: Lionel 15-Jan-2004, 05:59 PM |
Nan Losgann ! |
Posted by: massi 20-Jan-2004, 06:05 AM |
i love Pogues with Shane Mac Gowan lead singer but i like also Andy Irvine and Deaf Shepherd |
Posted by: balisodare 21-Jan-2004, 07:39 PM |
Lunasa would probably be one of the hottest bands I know of. I'd also say Bothy Band and Planxty are on my "Top Celtic Bands Ever" list. (sure...they're old...but has anyone really outdone them? |
Posted by: Keltic 21-Jan-2004, 09:29 PM
Can't argue with that!!! Have to add Solas as another powerhouse of a band. |
Posted by: massi 24-Jan-2004, 05:11 AM |
and what about young bands like kila or peatbog faeries??? |
Posted by: lighthouse 27-Jan-2004, 08:43 PM |
My favorite singer is Charlie Zahm follwed closley by Alex Beaton. I have yet to pick a favorite pipe band though Darlene |
Posted by: Lionel 28-Jan-2004, 03:16 PM
Who are they ? |
Posted by: Kiwi Gael 31-Jan-2004, 06:42 AM |
Of the named artists allocated for the poll, the winning sash goes to Loreena McKennitt. Classy and stylish lady, great music, and I love the way she blends the Celtic genre with influences and flavours from other cultures. I'm looking forward to her next studio release! |
Posted by: Aaediwen 31-Jan-2004, 01:56 PM |
What was that title I saw in a dream last night... it was actually on a book... But felt like a preview of her next CD perhaps... Probably just wishful thinking... |
Posted by: Haggishead 09-Nov-2007, 12:59 PM |
My favourite is still Alex Beaton. But the Corries and the Irish Rovers are great too. |
Posted by: Robert Phoenix 11-Nov-2007, 09:40 PM |
Even though this is a old thread I had to go with Loreena. Enya last album wasn't the boldest step so she went down a level for me. If Loreena wasn't up there I would have gone with other for the Battlefield Band |
Posted by: Haggishead 12-Nov-2007, 08:28 AM |
I admire the talent behind the Battlefield Band, but last time I saw them live ( about 1 year ago), they were far too political in their commentaries. If I wanted a spin on the news, I'd stayed home and watched TV. If they had just stuck to the music, it would have been perfect. |
Posted by: Robert Phoenix 12-Nov-2007, 06:21 PM |
That's too bad. When political views overshadow the music then its just not fun to listen to anymore. I haven't had the chance to see them live. They were in town twice and I missed them both time due to lack of funds. But who knows-bands ad their views change over time. |
Posted by: Haggishead 12-Nov-2007, 07:20 PM |
Very true. They are excellent in their music. |
Posted by: WizardofOwls 12-Nov-2007, 07:57 PM |
Of the listed artists, I would choose Loreena McKennitt, but my vote is for other. My favorite is Capercaillie and Karen Matheson. |
Posted by: dundee 13-Nov-2007, 10:00 AM |
had to go other... i would say my fav group is Silly Wizard or any group with andy m stewart.... also i like the old "steel eye span" and many others eddi reader, tannenhill weavers etc... but i ramble on and on...... |
Posted by: stoirmeil 25-Nov-2007, 10:27 AM |
I'm all for Silly Wizard and Battlefield Band meself. Favorite solo performer has become Ed Miller, since I've encountered his singing on CR. |
Posted by: Jimmy Carbomb 03-Dec-2007, 09:18 AM |
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about pulling a thread out of hibernation!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's nearly three years that this baby has been lingering in the archives!!!!!!! Almost makes me want to go into the attic and see what I can find. |
Posted by: Sìmeag 02-Mar-2009, 02:12 PM |
I'm a fan of the Peatbog Faeries, but The Corries run a close second. |
Posted by: Saltydog 05-Mar-2009, 07:14 PM |
Hehe, oh why not, since the thread sprouted new wings. Favourites at the moment, Bothy Band, Lunasa, Great Big Sea, John Doyle with anyone, but especially Liz Carroll, Alain Stivell, Celtic Fiddle Festival and us (but I'm partial) |
Posted by: PiperJR 05-Mar-2009, 09:21 PM |
Runrig, hands down. In my world no one is even close. |
Posted by: JollyMolly 13-Apr-2009, 11:26 AM |
Good choices! Need a Flogging Molly button though! woooo or how about Albannach!? |
Posted by: aquagirl 13-Apr-2009, 05:52 PM |
Currently I am a big Celtic Thunder fan!!! |
Posted by: LibraryJim 15-Apr-2009, 06:03 PM |
I put down Loreena McKennitt, because she is superb, but there are so many that I like that it is hard to pin it down to one, and it also depends on my moods at the time! Moya Brennan is another that I buy any CD she puts out, whether on her own or with "Clannad" Anúna The Chieftans Flogging Molly Seven Nations (Clan na gael) and local favs The McIlroys Tinker's Dam(n) The Wyndbreakers There are soooo many. |
Posted by: SonofHenderson 16-Apr-2009, 12:08 PM |
I love Runrig-only picked up on them a few years ago on this radio station but have a lot of their cds and even dvds now![COLOR=blue] |
Posted by: Rindy 16-Apr-2009, 12:32 PM |
I voted other. Some of my favorite groups are Clann An Drumma Great Big Sea Blackmores Night Rapalje Clan Wallace Tam McLucas Dougie MacLean Barley Juice Celtic Thunder Kevin Walsh Clanadonia Seven Nations Ed Miller Phil Coulter Heather Dale The Elders The Pogues The Trybe I think most of the artists here on Celtic Radio are fantastic musicians it's hard to just name a few. I could go on forever.. Slainte |
Posted by: LibraryJim 16-Apr-2009, 09:12 PM |
Blackmore's Night is the absolute best! But I wouldn't class them as Celtic, as such. Closer to Renaissance or Mediaeval Rock. I just got their "Paris Moon" DVD, and think it is better than "Castles and Dreams" even though I like C&D for the setting better (in a Castle at a Ren Fest). Along with Blackmore's Night, I would add Steeleye Span and Pentangle. |
Posted by: valpal59 17-Apr-2009, 08:12 AM |
I voted other. Some of my favorites were not on the list, some were. Loreena Mckennitt Enya Blackmore's Night Clann An Drumma Runrig Pipin Hot Wicked Tinkers Secret Garden Gael Warning Too many to list. Val |
Posted by: Amergin 19-Apr-2009, 09:14 PM |
Had to put "other" as well. There are just too many top notch groups not mentioned here. The Cheiftans, for instance. How could you leave off the superstars of Irish music? Also love the Elders, Dropkick Murphys, Steeleye Span, Tannahill Weavers, and dozens of others. Who's heard Albanach? Outstanding music. What a beat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Svvk8IAfr4E |

Posted by: MMEPhilly 09-Apr-2010, 09:24 PM |
Hey all, I voted "other" cause I am a huge Celtic Thunder fan... they have a way about them that has their dedicated fans getting into all things Celtic/Irish/Scottish... you can't ask for something better for tourism purposes in this economy!! They are bringing traditional music to masses of Americans and other international audiences, while playing cover songs, original music and traditional Celtic tunes. And they are all as hot as their rich voices!! Plus, almost all the lads play instruments, even if not in the show (on their own recordings). Many fans have sought out Celtic history/culture/jewelry, etc., you name it, and have picked up on Irish lingo and Gaelic Irish because the lads speak it... nw that is what I call an influential artist!! I listened to some Celtic music here and there... nothing serious... an MP3 here or there... or at a Ren Faire... owned a few Celtic Woman cds... but Celtic Thunder has made me a Celtic music fan and I have sought out other artists cause of them... I LOVE CELTIC THUNDER!! My <3 belongs to Ryan Kelly, Keith Harkin, Paul Byrom, Neil Byrne, Damian McGinty and George Donaldson!! ~Michelle in Philadelphia |
Posted by: firewood2u 06-May-2010, 09:24 PM |
As others have already said, there is such a plethora to chose from it is hard to pick ONE. However, if I must chose it would be Ryan's Fancy . The members are Denis Ryan, Fergus O'Byrne, and Dermot O'Reilly. Their rendition of The Cross at Spancil Hill is likely my all-time favourite song and if you have the chance to pick it up on 'The Irish Love Songs' album do yourself a favour and snap it up! Yes, I said album as i don't think it ever made it to C.D. Check out their impromptu vocals at the East Coast Music Association's presentation for a Lifetime Achievement Award. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMl45MrUmm8&feature=related |

Posted by: Antwn 08-May-2010, 07:25 PM |
I like Loreena McKennit and Maddy Prior but I'd also add Sandy Denny (!!). Group? Well, not strictly Celtic, but the Incredible String Band and Pentangle, Solas, Karen Casey and her band, the Chieftans of course, Mary Jane Lammond to name a few. Some singers who sing in Welsh too: Julie Murphy and Sion James. |
Posted by: tekj2000 09-May-2010, 05:35 AM |
Enter the Haggis !! |
Posted by: heartsong 25-May-2010, 06:07 AM |

Sure, but if we do it again, lets get rid of all the Irish options, please! What a group the Corries were!!! www.corries.com Coyote Run is a fun and fascinating group. But I really like Alex Beaton... okay, he does a wee bit of Irish songs, now and again... |
Posted by: IrishBeachLassie 25-May-2010, 11:02 PM |
NO Irish? hmmm ! Wow, that's like saying "No Music or Music with No Talent" that hardly sounds right ! |
Posted by: Shenaniganz247 13-Jun-2010, 12:36 AM |
to englishmix finally agreeing about Coyote Run!!! I was afraid I was the only person on here who had heard them lol I was so glad to finally hear them on the Celt-rock radio station here!!!! |
