Way back in the dark ages when I was a boy scout we cooked wonderful deserts and sandwiches in these...

I purchased 2 of these wonderful cast iron cooking devices a few years ago and have about run out of ideas of things to cook in them.

Does anyone own and use these?
What recipes do you use.

Here are two of my favorites:

As with any pie maker recipe trim the bread or other ingredients that hang out the sides so they do not burn.

Hash and Egg
( round pie iron )

1/4 cup corned beef hash
1 egg
pad of butter

Fry corned beef in a well greased PIE IRON until almost done.
Open the cooker and form a 2 inch hole in the hash.
Into the hole crack the egg and top with butter.
Close the cooker and continue to cook until egg is done to your liking.

Rueben Sandwich
( round pie iron )

2 tbls cooked corned beef
1 tbls canned sauerkraut
1 slice Swiss cheese
2 slices pumpernickle or rye bread
softened butter

Between buttered bread slices ( one side only ), place corned beef, kraut and cheese.
Latch handles and grill unil bread is hot and toasty.

My favorite is breakfast cooked over the fire.

Bacon & Eggs (can't go wrong)

Cut up some english muffins and put them in them in the greased/buttered pie iron, then add some pre-cooked bacon strips on top of the muffins and pour on some scrambled eggs. Cover and cook 5 min and it's breakfast time. The same can be done with hashbrowns in place of muffins. Salt n Pepper to taste, gotta love the classics!

I agree this is a wonderful dish... I have taken it a step further by adding shredded cheese and hot sauce to the eggs before cooking.

Great use of the pie iron, thanks!

My almost 2 year old grand daughter was over for the weekend, we had a pire ( what she calls a fire ) in our fire pit and made pie iron pizzas.

We had an assortment of breads and pitas.
We added pizza sauce, pepperoni, assorted cheeses, and assorted other toppings.

The pizza girl was in heaven.

What have you done latley with your pie irons?

You want a real camp treat, take your bread, butter both sides place butter sides down in pie iron.
Add left over beef ( or any meat ) stew ( can use canned stew from the store ).
Close iron and cook over hot coals until heated through.
KInda like a hot pockets but better.
