I was once invited into a Catholic church to speak about Patrick on St.Patrick's Day.

I began my talk by informing the congregation of three bits of bad news:
1. He didn't chase the snakes out of Ireland.
2. He wasn't Irish.
3. He wasn't a catholic.

He was a wonderful celtic evangelist, he was independent from Rome in his theology, having very different methods of making converts (more successful than catholic priests), and he differed from rome on some key issues such as the date for easter and the day of worship.

He was pretty radical.

Just heard a track from Distant Oaks, and the lovely voice of Deborah White.
It is now over four years since her untimely death, a beautiful soul whose memory will live on in her music and the lives of her talented sons.

I'm lost, how does a Mac user listen to Northern Woods?
I use iTunes for Highlander Radio, not sure how I did it but works and saves paying for Live 365.

OK got that, begun by pagans, reinvented by popes, celebrated by witches and is now a family fun day.

As I say, even from a "fun" perspective, it largely bypasses Australians.

And as a Christian, I don't believe in ghosts.

Seeking to learn of what really Celtic Christianity is today and how it can relate to me now - I've been buying books.

To be honest, I have been mostly disappointed with what I have seen so far. Some books have been:
Anam cara - John Donohue
Christ of the Celts - J. Philip Newell, plus other titles by this author.
Celtic Christianity - Joyce

Most of them seem (and this may sound harsh) to require that I disregard the authority of the Word of God and accept a mixture of Christianity and New Age.

One exception has been The Celtic Way of Evangelism by Hunter, this is a more historical work but very excellent reading.

Thoughts?

This book was recommended by a celtic brother so I bought it. After two pages I lost interest so I handed it to my wife who is good with books with lots of pages and no pictures, she couldn't follow it.

I'm not a great fan of novels anyway.

It is my impression that halloween is very important to Americans, unlike us downunder where it is generally disregarded except by a few nutters who like to have a party dressed up as witches.

From a Christian viewpoint, most believers I know regard it as a celebration of witchcraft.

However, having a growing interest in what may be called Celtic Christianity, I remain open to correction and "new light". Therefor I ask my brothers and sisters in this celtic forum what they think of this celebration.
Can a Christian celebrate it in good conscience?

Seeking to understand, not create controversy.

Well here is another issue, quite aside from the question of accuracy, biased translation, and other matters - the matter of cultural relevance comes in here as to one's Bible of choice.

While I understand that some here cannot cope with the old-worldly language of KJV - I actually like it.
I guess it not only syncs well with my love of all things medieval, but the language is classic and beautiful to me.
I know that some words have lost their meaning or even mean the opposite today, but it isn't too difficult to work through those words, and I'm not especially clever.

I love KJV and NKJV for the same reasons others have mentioned.

Just to broaden the discussion, but hopefully not detract from it, I also love to use electronic versions. eg, I use a Palm Treo and have several versions of the Bible on it.

I love the technology that allows mutliple versions, concordance, commentary etc - all in my pocket, not to mention the fast search features.

Maybe this could be the subject of another thread.

King James Version - based on the Textus Receptus. Don't like translations from the Westcot and Hort school of thinking (Sinaiticus or Vaticanus).

I agree, KJV for me, I don't mind the NKJV either. I mostly read the Bible on a Palm these days, it means it's always in my pocket.

Robert, God really is amazing..when we trust Him. An old pastor of mine used to have a saying "Work, don't worry". It was a simple way of thinking, he said 'just get on with the work before you and leave the worry to God'.

We don't serve some obscure 'force' in the universe, and idol made of stone, a human leader or a multi-headed deity.
We serve the Creator of all that is, Who has a great and personal love for all His creation, including Man, so much in fact that the Father sent His own Son to pay the price for our disobedience and to bring us back into His love.

So God does listen to us, as a Father does.

Wiz, you are very much in our prayers, those we love often let us down, but Jesus never does.

The time IS coming when we will all come to a common belief, Jesus is returning to establish His Kingdom for those who are faithful to the truth. Then all will worship the One True God, the only God, the God of the Bible through the Son, Jesus Christ.

Worshippers of false religions, dark arts, pagan religions and atheists will not be part of that Kingdom. They disqualify themselves through their disobedience.

Rev 22:12 And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to each according as his work is.
Rev 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the Ending, the First and the Last.
Rev 22:14 Blessed are they who do His commandments, that their authority will be over the Tree of Life, and they may enter in by the gates into the city.
Rev 22:15 But outside are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and makes a lie.
Rev 22:16 I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify these things to you over the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright and Morning Star.
Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come! And let the one hearing say, Come! And let the one who is thirsty come. And he willing, let him take of the Water of Life freely.

The following is from a ministry I support here in Oz. It's called Saltshakers, they are very much about helping Christians to understand the Christian World View as opposed to the atheistic/Humanistic world view we are bombarded by every day.

Their latest newsletter deals with the nonsense (and worse) surrounding Harry Potter
Part of it is below, I hope we who are Christian and love celtic things will achieve a balanced understanding of one of the most negative images of our times.
*******************************************************

Harry Potter - movie and book release

The film of the fifth Harry Potter book ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ has just been released.

The seventh, and final, book in J K Rowling’s series about Harry Potter, titled ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’, is scheduled for release this Saturday 21 July 2007.

We are concerned about the promotion and practice of witchcraft in these books/movies by the hero. Our primary principle in this situation is that the Bible tells us to have nothing to do with witchcraft.
Young people are often enticed to further explore the occult. For instance, Fiona Horne's book on being a 'Teen Witch' teaches girls how to be a witch and cast spells.

We have a page on our website which contains an analysis of the 'Harry Potter series.
It contains the following newly-added articles as well as a range of previous articles, and references and a list of books/videos that we stock.
See http://www.saltshakers.org.au/html/P/12/B/79/

We urge parents to carefully analyse this situation and read the following information - especially if your children are asking to see the movie(s) or read the books.

Some new articles:

MOVIEGUIDE has a review of the new film - ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’.

KJOS Ministries has written many insightful articles about the Harry Potter series.
The latest one is on the current movie - "The Deadly Magic of Potter Movies - The Order of the Phoenix is not "just fantasy!""

KJOS has a review of the book behind the movie ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’.

Hi Celtic Rose, I know, I know...I've been a stranger crybaby.gif but I thought I'd look in and your post caught my eye (as many of your posts do).

I feel too for this horrific event, I cannot begin to understand what happened, except in the terms you express.

You may know we had a similar tragedy in Tasmania some years ago, a nutter with a gun shot 35 people at Port Arthur. 30 - odd families affected, who knows how many others in the extended families, plus friends. It has a HUGE impact on a community.

I look forward to the coming of the Lord, then there will be no death, no tears, no guns!
Other than that I see little joy in this world gone mad.

I've certainly been enjoying the music on HR surrounding the theme "a Celtic Christmas".
I began thinking about what that term meant, given that Scotland (sure, only one of the celtic nations) has historically ignored Christmas, preferring to focus its celebrations around Hogmanay, what is a Celtic Christmas?

What are it's roots and what does it mean (to you)?

While I've never been one for trees and santas, I have to rejoice in that this is one time of year where the Name of Christ can be spoken of with less grief from the atheist clan.

Let us hope we can show such that Christ Jesus is no longer a harmless baby in a manger but now reigns in Heaven as King of Kings and will soon come to judge the nations.

Just a few Christmas thoughts..

Since becoming a Christian over 30 years ago I have from the beginning believed that we are in the Last Days.

Events of the last ten years or so have only further convinced me that Christ's Return may well be in my own lifetime - I hope so!
What events?

Increase in wars about the globe
Increase in natural disasters on a huge scale
Increase in the influence of and interest in false religions and the occult
Decrease in church attendance and solid Biblical belief.
Demise of family values and ethics
Wide acceptance of sexual deviance

I could go on, but I've kept to those things which the Bible says will happen. (Matthew 24, 1 Peter, 2 Peter)

Many people I speak with see that the end of life as we know it may be imminent, even those who have no Christian belief. One does not have to be a prophet to see the world is groaning and sick.
Only the born again Christian has hope for the future that is based on truth.

but hey, in spite of all this, the world is still a place of great beauty, at least where I live.

Tassie. God bless you but here in the US everywhere that they've banned hand guns, crime has increased. We have the 2nd ammendment here and it's our right. Canada is all ready trying to drop long gun registration because it hasn't solved anything. When someone says gun ban. I start to think of one thing. The loss of a right. ALso one name comes to mind. Hitler.

Hi Nova Scotian, yes I am aware of that and am familiar with the passion that some have with the "right to bear arms".
I do sympathise with that view, but as a Christian I have to ask some questions:
Why do i need a gun?
What are guns for? one answer is that some guns are designed only to kill people, do I want to kill people? No, but what about self defense? what does the Bible say about this? where is our faith in the God who is able to protect us?

I know this is easy for me to speak of, I live in a peaceful place (as much as anywhere is), I can walk the streets at night, I don't have to lock my doors when I leave the house.
but do I really need such a gun?

I do have a gun, a rifle, for keeping snakes and possums at bay...but do i want to kill people (for whom Christ died)?

yes guns are a controversial issue, but I hope to be guided by the Lord in this Who told Peter to put away his sword.

On another matter, I must say that Nova Scotia is one place I have never been that I really want to see, we may yet meet biggrin.gif

Do Australians have sovereignty over their own country or not? Doesn't that sovereignty include determining the standards for enacting law?

Sadly, I believe the answer to this question is "no". Australia has signed many many agreements with the United nations and other world bodies, most, without the people and even many politicians in some cases. The result of this is that the people really don't have a say, whichever government is elected they still have to abide by international treaties. This has severely eroded our independance.

It's still, however, IMHO, one of the best countries in the world to live. Women are respected a good deal more in general than in Muslim countries for one thing.
