I had not Introduced myself, though I have made a few Posts. Forgive for a clumsy lout if I have offended anyone. How I found this wonderful place! well I really don't' know, I was searching for something else and I saw Celtic Radio. I found a home with great music, then I found out hey there are great people here to go along with the music, I'm sure I have found a home.

I am Scots-Irish, married for about 75 yrs I think (allthough my wife says she has only been putting up with me for 65 yrs.). We have 2 sons and a daughter, 5 grandchildren, the youngest will be 18 next month. We have 2 German Shepards, Katie, Jack and Sammy he's kinda hard to describe. When he was 8 weeks old he looked like a malamute or husky, when he got a little older he looked like a baby Kit Fox now he just looks like Sammy. He's half Pomeranian half Chawwa ( I know it's not correct spelling but you get the idea.
I spent 24 yrs. in the United States Marine Corps retired in 1993, now I manage a AAA contract Tow Service. I love Celtic music and want to learn more about my heritage, wish I had started earlier but was always to busy. I feel this draw to Scotland & Ireland, I have not been able to go there but hopefully sometime this next year or early 2008. Well I hope to make allot of friends here, take care all.

Welcome!!!!! First of all I would like to say thank you for your years of service for our country. I have a number of people in my family that have or are serving for this country and I don't think we thank them enough! I also wanted to say that I am drawn to Scotland also. I have tons and tons of books on scotland. I don't believe that my heritage goes back to it, but there is just something about it. I hope you get to go in the upcomingyears!

Dia is Muire dhuit Antonio! (hello and welcome!)

So glad you found us - we look forward to getting to know you better! As you mentioned, you have not only found great Celtic music, but great people as well. The nicest thing we can do for one another is to help - and you have already demostrated that in your willingness to intercede for other's needs in prayer.

You and I have something in common (other than we both live in NorCal) - we both joined the Corp at the same time. I was a fighter/attack pilot stationed in DaNang and was shot-down twice - the second time did some rather serious damaged to my legs, so I did not get to finish as I hoped, but still feel that I can fight and make a difference on the "real" battlefield, which is prayer! This is why I'm glad to see that you started there - and believe me, you are making a difference!

I wish you and your family all the best - God has blessed you richly!

Best cheers! Robbie

My youngest son served in Iraq in the Marine Corps, now my Grandson ( my oldest sons! son ) is in Iraq in the Marine Corps. I pray daily that God protect him and keep him safe, and all the others that are in the Service now. Should something happen! I know that it's the will of God and he has his reasons. I feel this draw to Scotland & ireland, I have not been able to go there but hopefully sometime this next year or early 2008.

Don't even give it a second thought. Pick one of the countries and schedule a visit before May 1st. The tourist season starts then and everything costs more.

DO NOT join a tour group. Rent a car and drive your own pace and by all means, stop and talk to the locals. They will steer you to all the things the tour companies will never take you to. Visit the local pubs at night. You will pick up more things to check out and the stories and music are always the best.

If you take anything less than a 10 day vacation, your only cheating yourself. Two weeks is better. Remember, your in California and you will lose 2 days, just traveling back and forth to the country that you pick.

You will never see all of either country during a 2 week stay. Pick a section of the country and just explore that area and plan a trip for the other country the following year and do the same. Each year, pick a different section to explore.

Rent a house for the duration and use that as your base and head out in a different direction each day.

Since you have never been to either country, I would suggest that you fly into Shannon, in Ireland and Edinburgh, in Scotland. Both airports are in somewhat rural areas and that will allow you to get use to driving in either country. Dublin and Glasgow are much more congested and faster paced and will be much tougher to getting use to driving on the opposite way that we do. Continental is now flying into Belfast, if you want to be in Northern Ireland.

If you don't have one, get an ATM card and exchange a few hundred dollars before you leave the states, just so you have some Euros or Sterling (depending on the country you are visiting) in your pocket when you land. Then use your ATM whenever you need more cash.

JUST DO IT!!! biggrin.gif

If you need more suggestions, ask them here or PM me.

A Shrule Egan, Thank you for the welcome. I had been thinking, about just going it on my own. Just forget the hurry up get on the bus!! we have a schedule to keep and no we won't be seeing that on this tour. I must admit, I was going to just go all over from here to there and every where. I know I would miss so much , doing that. I was thinking about what you said and! decided to vacation in sections like you suggested it really makes more sense to do it that way. Thanks for the advise and hope to talk with you again soon.

Semper Fi Muircheartach, Thank you for the welcome, hope to get to know you better. I like cruising the open road myself, but my bike has 33x12.50x16 tires 4 wheel drive and a full rollcage. it's a Jeep. Can't get on a bike anymore and don't know why. Maybe sometime we can talk a little Corps. Take care and keep your head down.
