Aleister Crowley was many of the things that were printed about him. Many were his own creation. Yes, he was a drug, and sex addict. And loved ALL forms of experamentation of those things. But you also have to look at what he did in the age that he was doing those things. The turn of the 20th century. When Victorian conservity, and pre 20th century expressionism were colliding!
His writings and studies on Magick is what should be looked at.
I personally recommend his book - 'MAGICK in theory and practice'
That is where I would start...... then maybe to '777 and other Quabalistic writings'

I only half answered your question. As a person Aleister was a little 'out there'. Even for todays standards.... Just think the stir he made back in his day! But I think a lot of it was his own hype. As an Occultist his writings are very text book, and precise. You can tell by his words that Magick was his passion. I like his works.... many have a problem with it...... It works for me......
I am fascinated with Crowley. You have to weed out they hype from the oh, how do I say it, serious things he did. he definitley had a narcissistic streak. Some of the stuff he did was pure baloney.

Genious or Lunatic huh? hmm sounds like Nikola Tesla but on a more spiritual plane. It is amazing to me how when these men were alive they were put down and made fun of. Their reputations ruined because of other men and their arrogance. Yet now in this day and age we find that what they said or did was actually fact & correct in alot of ways. Are we more open minded physically or is there a deeper spiritual truth being shown to us?

I think it's a bit of both.
Today Magick is less Arcane, than in the day when, Aleister was practicing. At that time magick was done in 'secret' societies, ie The Golden Dawn. And he broke that mold, with his group O.T.O.
But I think his obsession with being an adventurer, took its toll on him. He lost his son to Scarlette Fever, while they were on one of his trips...... I think he was a bt obsessive about the things he was into. And that on top of his drug habits....... gave him some of his reputaion.
