Favorite Foods?, Whats your favorite Scottish/Irish Food?

Do you have a favorite Scottish or Irish Food?
My vote won't be haggis I can assure you but I do love the raisin raised bread from Ireland, (kind of bitter- sweet)...what's your favorite? Maybe your's is haggis. Well I'll save mine for ya too! Wouldn't want ya to go hungry now!

I was at a little pub in Temple Bar, in Dublin. They had the*BEST* Guinness and beef pie!
Meat was tender, carrots were sweet, and the broth was thick and flavored with Guinness. What more can one ask for???

Locally, here in Cincinnati there is a dish that is fresh mussels simmered in cream, garlic, and Harp. Very yummy!



Now it's only 9 am and I am hungry!!!!

Hi all,

Shepherd's Pie definitely tops my list, and my hubby would immediately say Guinness!! As to the drink, well I prefer Bailey's every time.

Enjoy food too much to pick a favorite. But can say without a doubt that kidney's would not be anywhere in the list. Not sure if it's Scottish, but last time I was over there it seems that that was in everything we ate. Kidney pie, kidney stew.....etc.

Here's a recipe for SHEPHERD'S PIE from my Mom:

2 c. leftover turkey stuffing
2 c. leftover turkey, cut into 1/2 in. cubes
1/2 c. defrosted frozen peas
1/2 c. defrosted frozen carrots, cubed
1 1/4 c. leftover turkey gravy
2 c. leftover mashed potatos
1/4 c. milk or sour cream

Lightly grease a 9x9 baking dish and layer first 5 ingredients in order given. In separate bowl, combine potatos with milk & spread over gravy. Bake at 350 for approx. 20-25 minutes until gravy is bubbling. Cool 5 min. and serve.

Tip: Dish can be made ahead of time, covered and refrigerated or frozen. Add 10-15 minutes cooking time if refrigerated: defrost before heating if frozen.


As far as I am concerned I prefer my pie with beef instead of turkey and like the vegetables fresh rather than frozen....but this will give you the general idea of what it's about.

We've played around with our Shepherd's Pie recipe. Here's the one we all can agree on.....

Grease a round glass cake dish
Layer, in order:

Pillsbury ready-made pie crust
1 lb. browned hamburger
1/2 C. peas
1/2 C. corn
1/4 C. carrots
1/4 C. green beans
(cover above with a rich brown gravy)
mashed potatoes, approx. 1 inch thick!

Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes, or until mashed potatoes are browned and slightly crusty

I've also heard of using strips of sirloin instead of hamburger. Either way, it makes a very filling, satisfying meal!

Karen (Dreamer): I like your recipe better....it's more like I remember having Shepherd's Pie.....I prefer big old hunks of meat as opposed to the burger, but that's just me and my tastes.

( I suppose one could substitute lamb in there for the burger, too.... destroying the "evidence" so to speak....the obligatory sheep joke, ya know!)

Favorites......hmmmm let's see....boiled ham with parsley sauce, mashed parsnips and carrots, brown soda bread, Cadburys biscuits (cookies to us yanks), colcannon (mashed potatos and cabbage slathered in homemade Irish butter) Fresh pot of tea with scones and clotted cream in front of a lovely turf fire....sigh.......November 5th can't come soon enough!!
