I decided I must get hubby one. Now what tartan to choose?
There is an unbelievable varity (I believe over 5,000 at this point) but most tend to go with the family name tartans. that tends to be the Scottish rule of thumb. Irish tend to go with the county they live in. If you are neither Scottish or Irish you can get tartans of you're country (I've seen Amrerican, German, Canada, Italian (mine), Cornwall etc. If you live in the U.S.A. there is a good chance that there is a state tartan. I know Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota all have state tartans. There are also Corporation tartans, National tartans, job related tartans, etc. Good place to check is http://www.Electric Scotland.com
While this is good advice, you can quite honestly pick any tartan that catches your eye. Families and clans did things pretty much that way in the days before clans became "associated" with certain tartans. They would choose whatever the local weaver happened to have at the time. Clan association with tartans didn't really become commonplace until the Victorian era. Stoirmeil's link earlier in the thread has some better info on this topic.
My current collection of 8 kilts has a variety of tartans, including a traditional Irish Saffron solid, the Irish National, Hunting McLeod, Gordon, Black Watch, Pride of Scotland (liked the colours), etc.
I could wear the County Antrim Irish tartan as that's where my grandfather came from, but I don't like the colours in it.

we do have a state tartan, and have even just gotten a Tricentennial tartan for our city. Unfortunately I don't like either of them. Maybe I'll let him choose one and I'll get a matching one. I have heard that women aren't supposed to wear kilts...is that true?
I got a mini-kilt that I wear to festivals and stuff. I love it! Who cares what the "rules" are. No one follows them anyway. I think it's an awesome idea to get matching kilts. Go for it!

I've been to Milwaukee's Irishfest for about five years now.Seen alot of strange things but if someone were to ask me if the lasses should wear kilts I would have to say GOOD GOD, YES!!!
Believe me, for the guys they are just as sexy on the lasses (my own opinion) and they are for the guys for you lasses.
There is another wonderful website for kilts if you cna't afford that high price right away.
They have a payment plan were I believe you can pay around $60 a month after a $75 deposit? And they send the kilt as soon as it is finished.

*is gobsmacked, contemplating the image*
I've also heard that anyone can wear any tartan, but NancyRaven had a really nice experience contacting the present chieftain for permission to wear the Hunting MacLean tartan. It's considered especially courteous, and much appreciated.
That was really nice idea. I'm hoping to officially join a clan when I find out more about my ancestry even though I've had offers. Unfortunately the Italian tartan doesn't really have a clan chieftain right now and hmmm...wait a minute
