Quote (Catriona @ Dec. 03 2002,14:30)
I've seen both the Proclaimers and Capercaillie, live.  I prefer the Proclaimers, though.

For those of you who don't know what a Capercaillie is.... it's kinda like a very large grouse or pheasant...   they live in the northern highlands :)

Proclaimers, they ain't bad. That song "I'm Gonna Be" (American title-"I Would Walk 500 Miles") has helped me in a board game my friends and I like to play called Encore! For those who've never heard of it, depending on the color of the space you land on, there is a corresponding word on a card and you have to sing a song with that word in it. They have to be actual songs; no original works. Pop music is preferred but commercial jingles and show tunes are allowed.

Just wanted to say that Runrig's 30th anniversary concert is finally announced ... in fact it' s been a week out lol. Just my usual long pipeline hehehe. It will be in Stirling, the Castle Esplanade. So far its Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham for support but I am sure there s more in the line up ... It will be an absolute tremendous party. No need to say that i ve got already tickets lol (price 28.60 L; tickets from ticketweb and various stores and halls throughout scotland incl. Inverness, Aberdeen  and Stirling; of course Edinburgh as well if I remember right; starting time is 7.30 so far but that could well change)  :D  :;):      :)

note.gif Kept quiet for a long time in this thread lool but i think its time to speak up again lol with the fantastic 30th anniversary gig in Stirling past and the new album Proterra out. A word about that. Brasilian expat Paul Mounsey who returned home this summer had a hand on this and as some of ye might know he loves juggling with computer technic and traditional scottish songs. Did a great job on Proterra, particularly on "An Toll Dubh" from Recovery album. But honestly Proterra does rock. A bit harder , more dramatic in some bits but very melodic all the way through. Favourite song is a cold shiver one called "From the North", a cooperation between singer Bruce Guthro, Guitarist Malcolm Jones and band bard Calum McDonald on Percussion. Celtic orientated I ll give ye the words i think hope u like them

From the north came a warrior,
bearing burdens dark and deep.
I ve a will and i ve a wanting,
and miles to go before i sleep .

Blood red wine, a toast for heroes,
and harping till the morning comes.
Come the dawn, the road will lead us
if ye ride with me tonight.

very dramatic and ye can see the warring tribe going out to get the cattle of the neibouring clan or mebbe to fight for Prince Tcharlach ... And hear the horses and bagpipes phew back to atmospheric keyboard and shiver down the spine.

The other of my faves is of course Faileas air an Airigh, where my nick comes from. Radiating happiness and idyll, as it is about the peaceful atmosphere of the Airigh, a pios of pasture on the family croft near the grazing cattle with the family sitting in sunshine and blissful harmony. Just one to melt away ...

Anyway my tip is get Proterra, borrow it from someone or whatever lol but i am sure it wont disappoint walkman.gif cool.gif laugh.gif angel_not.gif thumbs_up.gif note.gif

This is another one of my favorite bands. I don't have all their CDs yet....still working on that. I do have Celtic Glory, Beat of the Drum, Recovery, In Search of Angels and their latest, Proterra. I think that In Search of Angels is my favorite. One of my favorite song of theirs is "The Big Wheel." I just love the rock sound of that song.

I wonder if they speak Gaelic fluently or if someone translates the English into the Gaelic for them. Doesn't matter. But I just think it is really neat to hear the Gaelic, even though I can't sing along! biggrin.gif

Runrig and the Proclaimers are great in my opinion, and I'm glad to see the opinion of many others here smile.gif
I grew up listening to Runrig because my mother was very much into Scottish music, but only recently has the influence struck. She had two videos of Runrig, one was the Loch Lomond concert, not sure about the other, going to dig them out tomorrow and watch them.
As for the Proclaimers, it's another case of I heard their music when they first appeared (late 80s) but only recently found my own interest in them. This time is was thanks to hearing one of their lesser known songs on local radio a few years ago, "Then I Met You", and the lyrics hit me in a big way. Been a fan since then but never had any opportunity to go see them, or Runrig even, perform live. No matter though, some people cringe at the mention of them, but I can proudly say I like them a lot.

Snowblind! You have concert videos of Runrig????????! Wow! What I wouldn't give to see those, but here in the states I doubt we could even get something like that. I will have to check on Amazon.com. uk and maybe they will have them. Never thought about concert videos of them! Woweeee! Thanks!

I like The Proclaimers from what little I have heard. I must admit I have only heard a couple of songs of theirs. Runrig and Capercaillie has really struck me!

Snowblind. I have a lot of friends who are professional musicians in Scotland - most of them on the folk scene.... They think I am losing my sense of good music because I like the Proclaimers!

If you can, have a listen to 'The Best of the Proclaimers'. It has three of my favourites on that CD - 'Sunshine on Leith', 'Cap in Hand' and 'Throw the 'R' away'...

Cap in Hand is a really powerful song - and 'Throw the 'R' away' is about when people suggested they should lose their Fife accents and 'anglicise' their songs in order to get a record contract!

The Proclaimers are headlining the Glasgow Hogmanay concerts this year.

(Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the Runrig thread!) biggrin.gif

Sorry for the late reply, CelticRose.
The two I have are City of Lights and Wheel in Motion. Both are on amazon.co.uk on video (and I think one on dvd too) but you'd need to be sure your vcr or dvd player can play PAL videos or Region 2 dvds. Try amazon.com first and then the UK site if that fails.

I watched Wheel in Motion on Tuesday, it covers a tour they did which ended with the Loch Lomond concert. There are a few behind-the-scenes bits with the band talking about their status and the tour (which was in 1991) throughout the video and some helicopter shots of Scottish mountains and lochs to please. As for the music, you have songs from Loch Lomond to start, then 2 or 3 from Edinburgh Castle, 2 or 3 from Germany, 1 or 2 from the Western Isles and then it's back to Loch Lomond for the end.
It's around the 90 minute mark in length and worth getting smile.gif

I've not watched the City of Lights video yet but when I do I'll give my thoughts on whether you should get that one too, I know that it's a compilation of regular music videos and live performances so it'll be good no doubt.

Catriona, I'll keep an eye out for that cd next time I'm in HMV. I love having music recommended so thanks smile.gif

Hi Snowblind! thanks for the reply. My DVD and video player will not play PAL or Region 2, so I will look on Amazon.com here and see what they have to offer. I bet the concert videos are great though! I also need to get me some more Runrig CDs. I have several but not all of them. I love their new one Proterra and In Search of Angels the best that I have.

I too enjoy Runrig. I think they are one of the better Scottish bands out there. It would be great if they took on an American tour in 2004---It would be great to see them live!!

FotW - aka Failais is the Runrig specialist here - but often gets too busy to post... so, here's what appears to be an 'official' fan club site. May be details there of tours.
