NEW Dozens of Yakamas pray and walk for open government, unity

Yakima Herald Republic
TOPPENISH, Wash. -- Calling for more transparency in tribal government and unity among members and leaders, more than 100 Yakamas gathered in front of tribal headquarters Tuesday morning to pray.

Tribal members filled the grassy area in front of tribal headquarters on Fort Road as a few Tribal Council members and religious leaders sang ancient spiritual songs and candles were handed out.

After leaders and members shared concerns about alcoholism, job and housing shortages and more transparent decision making in tribal government, the group — some with candles in hand and others wielding signs — slowly walked in prayer around headquarters.

"I am satisfied," said tribal member and organizer Regina Jerry about the turnout. "I’m happy about that."

The event reflected a long-standing distrust of tribal government by some tribal members who complain that important decisions have been made by tribal leaders without a vote from the general membership.

Yakama governing laws say major decisions must be brought before the people.

The Yakama Nation is a confederation of 14 tribes and bands and its members belong to several different religious faiths.

It’s hoped that the prayer walk will bring those different groups together, said Miss Yakama Nation Carmen Selam.

"It’s something that’s there to strengthen the tribe as a whole," she said after rounding the building.

The prayer walk not only brings unity to the many different groups among the more than 10,000-member tribe, but also reminds tribal leaders to follow tribal laws when making decisions, said Jerry, who is also a minister with the Shaker Church in White Swan.

A political firestorm raged across the reservation five years ago when several Tribal Council members were recalled from office in the wake of the tribe’s purchase of the now defunct Sun Kings basketball team.

Most tribal members weren’t aware of the purchase of the team until after it was made.

The team was eventually dissolved after it was determined the tribe was losing too much money on the venture.

Jerry said she’s not blaming current council members for past mistakes, but hopes they follow tribal procedures in decision making.

"And all the decisions that they make affect each and every one of them," she said. "And that’s our reminder today."

It seems that ALL governments are forgetting who they represent AND who put them there in the first place.
I grew up with these people, and after the prayers there will be a SERIOUS reckoning!
Pull your head out of your a$$ ALL elected officials, it will be YOUR scalp on the lodge pole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All politicians need an eye kept on them. The same thing applies to them as Ronald Reagan said about the Ru-skies, "Доверяй, но проверяй" (trust, but verify)
