The social security death index has 71,000,000 records and it is a good place to get information about deceased relatives. The information is not extensive, but it might give you some clues in your search.

Doesn't help too much, though, doesn't give you any real information. Woo, found my grandmother, but that doesn't help me, because it doesn't tell me what I need to go further back, unless, perhaps, I pay for it. Blah.

Ok, sure the work would also be redundant, my father's done some tracing of his side of the family, and they kicked around the midwest for a while. He's gone back a few generations past my grandmother and hasn't gotten out of the country, yet, far's I know.

I have had a problem with the SS index as well. I find that I don't really get too much information from them either. maybe I am doing something wrong! unsure.gif

The information on a single individual in the SSDI is quite limitted, but I have found a couple of relatives in there that I did not have birth or death dates for, so it has had its use.

Of course, that is true of any data base. I recently discovered that my library has access to the HeritageQuest data bases online free for library cardholders. The census data for 1910-1930 was very useful for extending my family in some directions. However, most of my family was not in the censuses at all, even those I knew were in the country at the time. The other data bases came up completely dry.
