QUOTE (dundee @ 03-Jun-2004, 02:09 PM)
was pleasantly surprised when i looked up be thou my vision and found that it was indeed an ol irish tune..... wondering if there were other words before it became a hymn...... there is a christian harpist by the name of amy shreive (sp?) (i before e except after c???) that really does a great version of this song..... she has a wonderful voice and plays harp like she took lessons up there....... angel_not.gif

I actually new that about "Be Thou My Vision" as I read it on the sheet music when I did it with my church choir biggrin.gif

I was surprised how many hymns that came from Ireland.
I bought this CD years ago called Hymns International - Ireland
Here's the songs on it:
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
Morning has Broken
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
St. Patrick's Breastplate
Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus
Redeemed
Whiter than Snow
Come all Ye Christians
Be Committed
St Columba
Daniel
Clonmel
St. Sechnall
What a Woundrous Love is This
Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
Jesus Loves Even Me
Be Thou My Vision
Jesus Shall Reign
How Firm a Foundation
Londonderry Air

--------------------
"They That Wait Upon The LORD,
Shall Renew Their Strength,
They Shall Mount Up With Wings
As Eagels,
They Shall Run,
And Not Be Werry;
They Shall Walk,
And Not Faint." ISAIAH 40:31

Someone asked earlier what artist who I like or know that sings "Be Thou My Vision" in Irish Gaelic. Well, one artist is Moéyé (Mairîe) Brennan who is the sister of Enya. She does a wonderful job. The way she sings it makes the song so beautiful and haunting. This particular songs she sings is on her "Whispering to the Wild Water" CD, which came out a few years ago.

I absolutely love 'Lily of the Valley' and 'His Eye is on the Sparrow'...

I want those sung at my funeral, plus a rousing rendition of 'Just a Closer Walk with Thee'!

I have about four levels of favorite hymns. Level 1 is Amazing Grace as it stands alone at the top. Level 2 would include: Morning has Broken, I'll Fly Away, Lord of the Dance, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some more. Level 3 would include probably several hundred more that I really like as I hear them and level 4 are those that I don't care for at all. I can't think of a level 4 hymn right now so obviously it is a pretty small grouping.
