A few more I thought of:

"Peace is Flowing Like a River"
"Morning Has Broken"
"Lord of the Dance" (an excellent selection for Easter and childrens' Masses)

I was having trouble coming up with my favorite hymn until I saw Sea Dog's post in the thread I started, Monday is Memorial Day..., in the general discussion forum.

My favorite Hymn is:

Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn). I've "liberated" the verses from Sea Dog's post and am repeating them here:

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who biddest the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy Word,
Who walked on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Trinity of love and power!
Our family shield in danger?s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect us wheresoever we go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Please remember our servicemen and servicewomen in your prayers, for many of them have gone (and are currently) "In Harms Way" for our freedom.

MacE

PS: Please post the names of loved-ones and friends who have either sacrificed all or served in the Armed Forces, in the previously mentioned thread, so we can honor their memory/service. If we don't remember them, who will?

Amazing Grace is the number one. I always got chills when it was sung but it took on a new meaning when it was sung over my brother's grave.

Ole rugged cross

Amen(beuatiful and simplistic)

I'll fly away. I know it was on the O' brother soundtrack but it's still a beautiful hymn.

So many other's ... I'll have to sit down and get back to you with the top 100 or so...

I absolutely love In Christ Alone and Be Thou My Vision. Recently my school had revival week, and our "theme song" was In Christ Alone. It really sums it all up in a beautiful way.

I really like the Easter Song and did a remake of it for acoustic guitar a couple of years ago when Arminta and I were asked to play a mass.

Oh, I love "Be Thou My Vision" especially sung in Irish Gaelic. I forgot to add to my favorite list earlier.

Do you have any favorite artist(s) that sing this in Gaelic? I'd love to hear it.

Favorite Hymns:
Just about all that have already been listed.

I'll also add a modern classic:
Awesome God

Mike already listed my 2 favs. Morning has Broken and Lord of the Dance.

Kind of ironic that Cat Stevens made Morning has Broken a big pop hit, then converted to Islam. Go figure!

Someone asked earlier what artist who I like or know that sings "Be Thou My Vision" in Irish Gaelic. Well, one artist is Moéyé (Mairîe) Brennan who is the sister of Enya. She does a wonderful job. The way she sings it makes the song so beautiful and haunting. This particular songs she sings is on her "Whispering to the Wild Water" CD, which came out a few years ago.

Have you ever heard Amazing Grace sung in French? Beautiful!

Posted by: High Plains Drifter 11-Jul-2004, 08:26 PM
I have about four levels of favorite hymns. Level 1 is Amazing Grace as it stands alone at the top. Level 2 would include: Morning has Broken, I'll Fly Away, Lord of the Dance, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some more. Level 3 would include probably several hundred more that I really like as I hear them and level 4 are those that I don't care for at all. I can't think of a level 4 hymn right now so obviously it is a pretty small grouping.

O'siyo,
Without a doubt one Hymn that leaves me breathless is 'Amazing Grace'..it doesn't even have to be sung..on CelticRadio I have heard it played on the bagpipes often and it takes all that I have not to 'cry' a bit cry.gif Someone very near and dear to me has asked me to promise that when he leaves Mother Earth that I will see to it that he is taken back to Scotland, Edinburgh, and buried beside of his Grams..he has also asked me to have the bagpipes/pipers playing and has requested that 'Amazing Grace' be played..it is going to be one of the most glorious tasks I will take on, yet, one of the hardest sad.gif ..so tis one reason why that song is so special..

Nearer, Still Nearer

Nearer, still nearer, close to thy heart
Draw me my Savior so precious thou art.
Fold me, O fold me, close to thy breast.
Shelter me safe in that haven of rest.
Shelter me safe in that haven of rest.

Nearer, still nearer, nothing I bring.
Naught as an offering to Jesus my King.
Only my sinful, now contrite heart.
Grant me the cleansing thy blood doth impart.
Grant me the cleansing thy blood doth impart.

Nearer, still nearer, Lord to be thine
Sin with it's follies I gladly resign.
All of it's pleasures, pomp and it's pride.
Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified.
Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified.

Nearer, still nearer, while life shall last.
Till safe in glory my anchor is cast.
Through endless ages, ever to be
Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to thee.
Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to thee.

This has got to be my all time favorite hymn.

Does anyone know the words to I Cannot Tell? It is sung to the tune of O Danny Boy but I don't know all the words to it. This is the chorus

But this I know, all flesh shall sing his praises,
The morn will break as all creation sings.
The sun will rise on one eternal morning,
When Christ the Saviour of the world is Lord and King.

My fave is "Softly & Tenderly" - I had it played at my son's funeral:

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling for you and for me;
See, on the portals He?s waiting and watching,
Watching for you and for me.

Come home, come home,
Ye who are weary, come home;
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
Pleading for you and for me?
Why should we linger and heed not His mercies,
Mercies for you and for me?

Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing,
Passing from you and from me;
Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming,
Coming for you and for me.

O for the wonderful love He has promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.

Enya sings a great Quaker hymn called "How Can I Keep From Singing" which is incredible. And another I love:

"Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus"

Posted by: susieq76 03-Sep-2004, 04:01 PM
"In Christ Alone" - which I want played at my funeral:

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost it's grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Brought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
'Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand

Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming

Lo, how a Rose e?er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse?s lineage coming, as those of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.

Isaiah ?twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
To show God?s love aright, she bore to us a Savior,
When half spent was the night.

The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger they found Him,
As angel heralds said.

This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
True Man, yet very God, from sin and death He saves us,
And lightens every load.

O Savior, Child of Mary, Who felt our human woe,
O Savior, King of glory, Who dost our weakness know;
Bring us at length we pray, to the bright courts of heaven,
And to the endless day!

One I want at my funeral:

Nearer, My God, To Thee

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E?en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I?d be nearer, my God to Thee.

Refrain

There let the way appear, steps unto Heav?n;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I?ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I?ll fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

There in my Father?s home, safe and at rest,
There in my Savior?s love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.

Refrain

I really like "The Old Rugged Cross" and this newer one called "How Deep the Father's Love:

How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He would give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross
My guilt upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no powr's, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

What Kind of Catholic Are You?
Results of Beliefnet's Catholic identity quiz

You are a traditionalist Catholic
You wish the church would revive the time-honored customs and strong institutional discipline that prevailed before the Second Vatican Council. Your favorite hymn is probably "Immaculate Mary," your favorite pope is Pius X, and your idea of a great Catholic movie is "The Bells of St. Mary's."

Here's a hymn I want at my funeral:

Lord of The Dance

I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth,
At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Refrain

Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.
And I?ll lead you all wherever you may be,
And I?ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
But they would not dance and they would not follow me;
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John;
They came to me and the dance went on.

Refrain

I danced on the sabbath when I cured the lame,
The holy people said it was a shame;
They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high;
And they left me there on a cross to die.

Refrain

I danced on a Friday and the sky turned black;
It?s hard to dance with the devil on your back;
They buried my body and they thought I?d gone,
But I am the dance and I still go on.

Refrain

They cut me down and I leapt up high,
I am the life that?ll never, never die;
I?ll live in you if you?ll live in me;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.

Refrain

So Welcome back my new friend! I can't wait to get to know you through your posts! And don't stay away so long next time! biggrin.gif

Thank you so much Allen (and everyone else) for your warm welcome back. School and the like kept me much too busy for a while, so I hadn't been able to visit the site as much as I would like. Hopefully I'll be able to visit more regularly this semester.

Cori, you can find out about Indelible Grace http://www.igracemusic.com/. They have info about all of their cds, plus music, lyrics and chord information available if you want to learn the songs. They even have a link to a hymnbook online which offers a collection of 143 songs available free of charge. Enjoy! biggrin.gif

Oh, I love "Be Thou My Vision" especially sung in Irish Gaelic. I forgot to add to my favorite list earlier.

Glad you mentioned that, Bi Thusa Mo Shuile (Be Thou My Vision) is my all time favourite.

I especially love to hear Moya Brennan sing it on her album "Whisper to the wild water"

I love to sing it in church, I sometimes play it on the whistle. It is one hymn that can truly be called 'celtic'.

...very inspiring stuff, makes me think of God's Greatness!

Tassie,

Who wrote "Be Thou My Vision"? Was it originally written in Gaelic?
Do you sing in Gaelic at your church?

I have always loved Church music and still to this day. I bring the kids every Sunday as I think it is very important.

A few favorite hymns of mine:

In the Garden - 'And he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am his own own, and the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known...'

Amazing Grace
Rock of Ages

I'm Going Home - Sacred Harp Singers (Sung in the movie Cold Mountain and requestable from our request list).

And one that our church sings 'Aaediweiss' from the sound of music, but they change the words to a Christian Verses.
