The root name is most likely from the word "Verne" which means 'Fern', or someone who lives in an area surrounded by ferns... The earliest name in records is of a Philippe Du Verne in 1334 in an area of France called Forez which is South Central France and within the Massif Central. There's even an area called Les Caves Duvernay a wine producing area.
