Thanks for giving us this new forum!  I accidentally stumbled upon Scottish Radio a few days ago, and we have been listening to it ever since!  I am of Scottish Highlands descent on both sides of my family (my fathers family are Stewarts and my mothers family are Taylors). My children have been studying about Great Britain at school, so this has all been very timely. I tell them that the British Isles are not just one big group of islands like Hawaii, but are comprised of several countries, each with their own unique history and culture. As you can tell, my teaching background will never leave me. I am no longer in the classroom, but I still enjoy the adventure of education. :D

I will warn everyone from the very beginning that I am known to be somewhat opinionated, and I really do enjoy sound, logical debates! I do not pick fights, but neither do I walk away from one! ;)

I want to see us have 100 members by January as well. I think the more people we can get to come together here, the better the message boards will be, so I will tell all of my friends about this board!  I am currently on several Scottish message boards, but they are very, very slow to post - I am not sure why that is?  I do know that there is a 6 hour time difference between me and Scotland, so that might have a wee bit to do with it....

Your "sister" across the sea ,

Janet  :)

Paul

You sure you want to dive into all of the discussions? Some of them are pretty wild. For instance KYLassie mentioned a picture from Electric Scotland that looked like her Uncle Joe and boy did we have fun with that picture. It started with me actually posting the picture then totally going wild with him and editing a set of torn jeans for him and a rebel tee-shirt it got pretty wild. But was allot of fun and good pratice for me with overlapping graphics and such.  :D

Just wanted to take a minute and welcome our newest members.

azelb - Nov. 2001
shearpin - Nov. 2001
McLean - Oct. 2001

And of course I can't forget our new fearless leader. I know Sir Robert the Bruce you're asking yourself which way did they go which way did they go. :p

Posted by: scottish2 17-Nov-2001, 06:01 AM
Not saying it couldn't happen in fact I would love to see it myself that's why I link to Pauls forums whenever possible off my website so he gets the traffic and we don't compete against each other. We'll get there. Just a matter of how long it will take hopefully sooner then later.  :)

Wow, I leave the forum for a few weeks to work on the website and I come back and it is full of life!!!! :D

Just a great big welcome to all of the people that have posted on this topic and also a big thanks for your very kind comments! Hope you are enjoying the music, the forum and the website! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts and look forward to getting to know you better over the next few months.

It seems we really have a great group of people here and I can't wait until I have more time to really dive into some of these discussions!

I would like to welcome everyone to the Highlander Message Boards. This is the place to talk about anything and everything! We have just installed the software today, so as you can see we really do not have a whole lot of posts. To get things started, perhaps post a message about who you are and what you like about Highlander Radio.

In the meantime, feel free to explore the forum software. I think you will find a ton of nice features that you don't normal see in your regular forum software.

Thanks again for everyones continued support of Highlander Radio and enjoy the message boards! :D

Hi All!
Just wanted to introduce myself.
I'm a highland dancer for the past 3 years. I'm 25 and live in Cleveland, Ohio.
I have an avid interest in all things scottish and a bit irish. I'm an italian, and only have one relative who was from Ireland which I traced back to the scottish Cunningham clan.
Ironically, it was that tartan I picked to dance in (before I discovered my only Gaelic heritage).
I love this site and I wish i was at my desk more often because this site would be on it all the time!
So I don't know what else to write.. hope to be able to chat with a few of you soon.
I have passed this site along to all of my friends :)
Yours,
Falachaidh.    :D

(l) New ideas anyone?

Posted by: ShortBit 29-Jan-2002, 02:02 PM
I agree!!  We need something to get everyone interested and posting some sort of response.  What that would be is beyond me at the moment.

Posted by: maggiemahone1 29-Jan-2002, 09:04 PM
Wow!!!!!  I was beginning to think everyone had gone on and left me behind. I'm so glad that Shortbit and aklassie are still here. :D  Yes we do need something to discuss.  This is what the board is for.  History and music are some of my favorite topics.  What about the rest of you all?

I read about a woman that disguised herself as a man so she could become a doctor.  It was at a time that a woman was forbidden to do so.  If I'm not mistaken she was a Scots, but I cannot think of her name.  Would anyone happen to know who she was? She must have really had a determination and a love of medicine and wanted to help people.

Another woman from Scotland that I thought to be courageous and brave was Flora MacDonald,  a woman that helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape to France after the battle of  Culloden, even though her fiance and her foster father were members of King Georges forces.(some say fiance and some say it was her husband)  Later her and her husband did come to the colonies and live and did support the British.  (I guess a woman has got to keep peace in the family)  She died March 3,1790 and supposedly was wrapped in the bedsheet of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  The story goes that her and the Prince had a romance during her time of helping him escape.  :B  :B  I give this brave and courageous woman (d)  (d)  (d)    maggiemahone1

Yes, things have calm down a bit here! For myself, it seems I can not get myself away from the html coding and web server. Also been learning alot about graphics through PSP7. So I do apologies for not paying much attention to the board.

I might make a few changes on the board to get interest back.

As always, appreciate Maggie's topics. They are always good reading!

Posted by: aklassie 30-Jan-2002, 01:16 AM
Hi Maggie and Shortbit,
like you Maggie, I love history also.  I've read all the intresting things you've wrote.  I've read about the women you're talking about and I can't remember her name also.  Wonderful story.  Have you ever read anything on Robert the Bruce's wife(the real Queen) Elizabeth?  I read alittle about her on  Electric Scotland.
Like you Shortbit I can't think of what would get things going again.  Maybe a topic on Scottish women? Today and in History?

Posted by: maggiemahone1 30-Jan-2002, 10:19 PM
I haven't read about the Bruces wife.  You can be assured that I'll be trying to find out about her.  Speaking about  Robert the Bruce I read after he died his heart was removed and taken on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The Bruces favorite knight Sir James Douglas, was chosen to do this honor.  He was killed in combat by Moorish calvary in present day Spain.  The Bruces heart (h) was brought back and buried at Melrose Abbey.

Would anyone know if the song "Flower of Scotland" about the Bruce?   maggiemahone1

Posted by: Administrator 03-Feb-2002, 06:16 PM
The Robert the Bruce story, and his wives - children are truely one of Scotland's most amazing come backs (of course only ranking after William Wallace!;).

I recently had the opportunity to read a historical account of Robert the Bruce and it seems at his lowest point in his life - when he had been stripped of the crown and chased into the hills, his wife and daughter was placed in a cage and hoisted up above a castle!

What an amazing story to retake the crown, Scotland and almost the crown of England! Of course, I think if he really wanted the crown of England he could have taken it.

Posted by: Gordon_HiLandR 04-Feb-2002, 10:14 AM
So glad to have found this forum.  I'll be checking in often.  I agree that Robert the Bruce was an astounding person.  I guess that sometimes it takes downward momentum to create an upward bounce!!! :D

Posted by: ShortBit 04-Feb-2002, 08:58 PM
Flower of Scotland was written by Roy Williamson of The Corries.  I believe his is referring to Robert the Bruce and the proud Scotsman that fought with him again Edward and the British Army.  But more importantly I think he is singing about the great Scottish pride in their country, the land is theirs... the Scots... that Scotland fought for the right to be Scotland...not Northern England.  The English thought that this would be a walk in the park... take the land...it was just land.  They did not realize...it is not JUST land..it is the heart and soul of the Scot.  It is their life.

Hi Mel

And welcome.

Not to worry believe it or not the forum is only a wee one Paul got it going last September but it's been growing rapidly so no on eon the boards known each other very long. But we have fun as if we'd all been friends forever. So just feel free to jump into any conversations you'll get to know the regulars and the no so regulars in a blink of an eye.

Once again welcome.

Thanks for the welcome The Scottish Thistle (sorry,I don't know your name  :B ) It's hard sometimes to arrive on a new forum, everyone seems to know everyone since years and they don't leave much place...I had bad experiences with that in the past. I guess I'm not the only one. But it's sounds great here. By the way, sorry for my crappy english. French is my first language.

And Teliesin, you're lucky to have some snow because we don't have any winter at all here in Montreal. The snow doesn't stay longer than 3 days in a row (cry) .

have good weekend everyone!

Hi Mel

Just so you know when you're looking at the listings the users ID is above their little incom like I use the Saltire and my ID is Scottish2 then in your profile area you can add a Custom member title which in my case is The Scottish Thistle because I am the web master for the Scottish Thistle website. Just so you know how that works. In real life though the names Dave  :)

And I'll pardon your English if you'll pardon if you'll pardon mine and English is my first language just stink at writing and spelling. Seem to be able to read well enough LOL :p  but writing was never my forte  :p take after my dad in that sense.

Hi everyone I found celticradio, a few days ago.  It is great! I checked out the boards yesterday.  Now I'm jumping in.  My user name is the English translation of hubby's family name.  His grandmother's mother was a McIsiac (sp?)  I learned from my birth mother I was Irish and Apache from her.  Hubby & I graduated from a Robertson High.  We now live in a town, where the highschool is the Highlanders, and the band wears kilts and has a few bagpipes.  My oldest daughter married a McDonald.  She learned to make a kilt before the wedding.  We have gone  the Ren Fest on highland days, I love the battle of the bands.  My grandson was out on the field when he was 15 months in his kilt, plaid, & tam and the drummer took pitty on him and let him play drum.   Though if I have my way, it will be the bagpipes he learns.  Granddaughter is into singing and dance. would love  to get her into culteral dance.
 :B a little long (h)

It's been snowing here for the last three days! I think Spring had forgot us .

But enjoy the spring that is coming up anyway!

Well the weather was warm here in lower Michigan on the first day of spring. It snowed yesterday, and again this morning.  Saw a crocus in a city south of us this past weekend, can the  tulips be fay behind? Or am I dreaming?

Been hot here the last few days in SC now very windy this morning white caps on the water I can see from here. Should make for some interesting tennis this afternoon if weather holds. Always fun trying to control the ball when the wind wants to do just the opposite to it.

And yipee 300 posts for me with this post!  :o)

One week ago we had warm 70' temperature and bright sunshine. Today we have had a record low of 19' and we have had to turn our heaters back on in the house! El Nino is on its way!!!!

Posted by: Mel 22-Mar-2002, 04:56 PM
it's  -27 degrees Celcisus here today with the wind. Does some talked about spring??? I think Mother Nature is running after the little El Nino who's messing around with the weather  wand.  ;)

Posted by: aklassie 23-Mar-2002, 12:21 AM
It's 22 right now.  Been nice and sunny.  Snow is melting! ! !
After temps have been in the - it's realy nice.  Spring in Alaska is called brake up because of the ice braking up in the rivers.  Spring is here when the ice goes out in the Tanana River.  Some time in April.

Posted by: kylassie 01-Apr-2002, 08:33 PM
Well, we have had our third 70' day of the spring!  (rose)  Spring here is several cold rainy spells followed by brief warm sunny days, with the weather eventually turning drier and warmer. So this week, we have had three wet and cold days, including a major storm, which was followed by the lovely day we had today. Weatherman says tommorrow will once again be wet, cold and rainy. I have been comparing our weather to that of Scotland, and I believe we are getting pretty much the same weather, except the temperatures there dont go as high as our do.  :o)

Actually I think of all of the airports - Logan ought to now be the SAFEST airport in the world! I heard they fired everybody and have set up all new security.

Gosh I can't believe they made you ride in a "prop plane" - isn't that one of those fake planes they use in the movies?  :O  ;)

Yeah, I was a little shocked what I had to get into. Even though it was US Airs - a prop plane??!?! It was about the size of the WWII bomber planes, so I got a good feel what it was like to fly in 1945!

I had to fly to Syracuse, NY for just the day. I guess they don't have any jets going there. Well, atleast I had today off and I enjoyed the warm weather. 91 degrees here in Mass and we turned on the air conditioners!!

Nice try Longshanks but this time around you'll have to start off as a lowly Peasant. If you note just under your avatar picture is your current ranking. The more you post the higher your ranking. For instance I was the first to reach 200 (Officially) posts which entitled me too the title King of the forum. Since then our true fearless leader Machfive AKA Paul reached the same title and then we also have just recently crowned two queens Kylassie was the first queen and maggiemahone1 was our second. So hate to say it but this time around you will have to earn the title.  ;)

But in the meantime WELCOME to the forum hope you will find it as fun a place as the rest of us have.  :D

Hi Dragonfly,

Nice to see you on the board again. Great pictures. I think I know what you wanted to do, so I took your picture, reduced it to 100 x 135 and put it in your profile.

Let me know if that looks ok and such.

So do you perform at the theater?

:) I have been listening for about a week now and figure its time to become a member.  This has been a great station to listen to while working on my art.  (3d computer models).  I really must get more memory so I can continue while rendering.  Any ways I don't have a bit of Irish Scottish or celt in me.  So I can only think I must have been Irish in a former life cause its been an influence in my life from the likes of red heads, celtic music and even my art work.  Though I did fail miserably at learning to play the harp and Gaelic.

Yes, W, I know....  but MacFive kindly said that if I objected to having any title, he'd go into his 'admin' mode and just remove them from my name....

A former SNP member has great difficulty in accepting any unearned title.....  and chieftains and chiefs are through the bloodline...  not the internet!!  :D

Braveheart - Mel Gibson and that film has a lot to answer for - the history as shown in that film was complete rubbish....

I just wish, for once, history would be allowed to be shown, warts an aw, instead of the stupid Hollywood embellishments.  I MEAN.... that WOAD....  whitsatawaboot as we would say? :D

::viking WG & C you think Hollywood has messed up  British History, just guess what it has done to West U S history which is closer for them to film. There is nothing like going to the movies and rooting for the bad guys, which you know is going to loose.

(note) Although the film isn´t true to history, the sound track of braveheart is great...And here I listen several times to parts of it (Clannad, especialy).

So, don´t be too upset about the title, Catriona!!

I agree 100% about Hollywood messing up what is true and what isn't.  Hollywood wants to please the crowd, and the crowd wants fantasy, so of course the truth goes out the door...A Bad thing in my opinion...I have a history channel on our local cabel and sometimes they have some great programs, in fact they did a series about the Braveheart film and went thru what was fact and what wasn't.  The thing is, not everyone wants to know the truth.  They just kinda go along with the flow!  :rolleyes

Here in the states, as a young girl growing up, the films always marked the Native American Indians as bad guys.  They portrayed them as murdering, scalping, savages.  When I started researching my family history, I found out I had some Cherokee Indian in my family.  I started doing more research on the Indians and found out that they were just trying  to survive. All their lands was taken, they were lied to by the US government, they were given supplies that were disease ridden, some did convert to the white ways, I guess they did it thinking they were going to have a better life  and some stood their ground for what they thought was right and fought til the end.  In my opinion if any one race of people could cry how unfair they have been treated, it is the Native American Indian.  I could go on and on about this, but I won't!
Anyway, Everyone have a nice day today, it is raining here in the mountains of WV.  Not unusual for it seems it always rains on election day.

Cabbagehome......  here's my story :D
I am a Scot.  I come from Edinburgh.  I have no title.  I want no title  :D

Titles here have a different meaning than overseas, I think....   I know three people who have a British Title, ie they are called Lady......    they have that title from the Queen.  The only time they use those titles is to get a good table in a restaurant or when they write their name and address out in full  :D

I'm really uncomfortable with role playing/fantasy type boards - I tend to avoid them  :)

My family are proud Scots, and we have no other bloodlines - certainly in the past 400 years or so - I cannot vouch for earlier than that time, as written history is hard to come by!;) I am not too keen on all this sham clan stuff either.... :(   Sorry if that offends anyone here, I truly don't mean to upset anyone here...   BUT, the clan system is DEAD - granted there are clan societies - but a lot of them, particularly the ones based in the USA don't even ask for proof of connection - you just have to express an interest in the 'works and names of the clan'..... I mean.... how real is that?

However, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade  ::lol   Just cos I don't like it, doesn't mean I have a problem with anyone else buying into fantasy titles .......     :D

Posted by: Cabbagehome 06-Nov-2002, 06:07 AM
::viking Oh maggiemahone1, you're a tame indian. I'm afraid our dog solders, were not to nice to your tribe, after it was take on the trail of tears, and settled in Oklahoma.
::hmm Catriona I guess when you grow up with titles lording over you, you would rezent them. You have a title somewhere I bet. Someones daughter at least. We may have to make you Historian of Scotland, or Two feet in Scotland, or ?.  ::hehe

Posted by: Catriona 07-Nov-2002, 06:03 AM
No one was 'lording' it over me, Cabbagehome  ::lol

And yes, probably, there are a few titles in my history, but way back (that holds good for most of us, after all, go back far enough and we are ALL related!;) - but I have no interest in that side of things :)

Like most Scots, I learned the history of my country, in detail, at school....  However, if I come across as a  'hectoring know-it-all' then I apologise :D

Posted by: Macfive 07-Nov-2002, 10:20 PM
The titles were just a fun way to make use of the ranking system on the message board. I am completely open to a new ranking system if anyone has a good idea. Just send me an email and we can discuss on here. Otherwise, we shall stick with what we got.

:)D

Posted by: Cabbagehome 11-Nov-2002, 07:32 AM
::viking Catriona the titles I was refuring to were ones that you hold now, ie daughter, son, mother, father, aunt, uncle, etc.
I guess if I went far enough back, I could find a cheif. That would make me, still just a squaw.

Posted by: Falachaidh 16-Nov-2002, 09:03 AM
Funny thing, the medieval organization I re-enact in uses titles all the time. Though, you have to earn your title. Lord or Lady you earn when you do enough service work and people recognize you. they write letters, then our 'king and queen' call you up in court and hand you a scroll. There are others such as Baron and Baroness.. granted by the king and queen. Count and Duke when you have sat on the throne so many times.. etc.
In no way are these used outside of our re-enactment. But it's interesting to see how they come into play, as our group tries to be as close to the middle ages as possible.. with England the center.
Of course, none of it is mandatory. Like me.. I just go and have some fun. :)

As far as this baord, is definately not roll-playing. We just share information ..good and bad. :)
glad you're here :)

::viking I vote we keep the titles. But I do love hearing from our Edinburgh connection.

Posted by: Macfive 18-Nov-2002, 01:57 PM
Titles are staying. I have not received any alternate ranking system that would be better than what we have. I think for the most part people find them fun.

Maybe it would be better if I just left you all to it - I'm not sure how much of a contribution I can make here

Posted by: free2Bme 20-Nov-2002, 04:30 PM
You must take something for that cough cousin! You can ask  our King Macfive to remove your title - he is a wiz with the computer and it can be done. However before you go about getting it changed or removed, consider this, it is ONLY a sort of fun ranking system - if you are a chatter box like me, you will be Queen in no time at all. I think it took me less than a month to make enough posts!!!

I relate this system more to a friendly game of checkers - eventually EVERYONE gets to be King or Queen (a few jump around and get crowned and all that stuff too). It is of more an act of sportmanship, than a social caste system. Besides, it gives us an excuse to have a message board PAR-TAY whenever one of us finally gets "coronated."

Someone usually bakes a (cake), followed by several well wishes and lots of (gift), perhaps a spot of hot (coffee), and if we are really in a good mood a round of   ::beerchug for all!

If you care to look at my earlier posts here, I explain WHY I don't like titles...   And, as you are all resident in a republican country, I'm amazed that you are so wedded to such a 'ranking' system  ;)

I still feel that I don't fit in here.... I'm too 'staid', too grounded in reality.  I have no illusions about my home country and my history...  I love it, but I see it - warts anaw, as we would say.

I HATE shortbreid tin-itis, BPC and Jacobite romances etc....

I HATE shortbreid tin-itis, BPC and Jacobite romances etc....

Hey, me too!!
I think one of the worst movies out there was Braveheart. So highly acclaimed, all of my friends loved it, I loathed it.
I think the only thing I'm really enamoured with is the history of the dance, music and all those half beaten castles. I think Ewan MacGregor is a fine speciman of a man, and a good actor.. but just because he's Scottish isn't my reason ;) Same with Sean Connery.
I identify with the dance so much, I really haven't a reason. I don't do that with any other form. (I've done ballet, tap, medieval, ballroom, jazz, square, country, courtly, and irish.) It just draws me. Just like the music. (I grew up playing woodwinds in school bands and private lessons.) Though, I have to say, I want too bad an irish flute!

Now what I have to say is just a general concensus. I think most of us on this forum board think enough for ourselves, we can exclude some of it to some extent. An in no way do I mean to sound attacking, or Fruedian. It's just my nickle of thoughts on why we like certain things :)   (b)

I think the real reason why we're like this, us in the US, is we don't have the history you  have. When we learn American history, it starts with the Pilgrams in 1642. Well, I can tell you, we've already skipped about 100 years of real American history. But in 1642, the Elizabethan period was already halfway over in England. We can't date anything back before 1000 AD..unless you count the Native Americans.. and even then, we don't have much in our books on that.

As far as the ranking system here.. I really don't see it as a ranking system. I was one of the first handful of people on this forum. I'm not a queen. Primarily because I like to read more than chatter unless I'm in a chat-room. But I think we like it because it wouldn't be so much fun if we were called Presidents. We have that: Clinton, Nixon, JFK, Bush.. who wants to be that? Or dictators.. Castro?? um, no thanks ;)King and Queen hold a romantic title to us. Ask any American to name the first Queen that comes to them. Elizabeth? Victoria? Catherine of Russia? Mary, of Scots? We never think of the harships they endured to hold that office. Especially in a man's world..even more so back then... to keep their countries together. Elizabeth had one heck of a time keeping England financially afloat. (only because I'm studying her now. Mary is next. her half-sister.) We think of.. wow.. those dresses, the manner of speech. Victoria and her white wedding, the romantic age. Elizabeth II, Charles, Princess Diana, etc. The paintings, the castles, palaces, they got whatever they wanted, the money, gold, silver, the jewelry, those crowns and sceptors and coronation robes, the la-ti-das of births, marriages, coronations, and deaths. They are all in our storybooks we read as children. So, to have, even a fake, title such as queen or king, it's literally awesome to us. We all want to experience something like that in some way. (I mean, when little girls dream about their wedding -in the traditional sense- what do they want to happen? That massive church wedding comes from the Victorian Age. Queen Victoria was the first one to standarize white as the wedding dress. Purity. Virgin. Love and Peace.)

It's romantic to us.. and amazing. We really cannot comprehend our ancestors 'being there' when castles were being stormed by knights. When Henry VIII divorced from the Church so he could divorce his first wife and marry 5 more. It's hard for some of us to comprehend clans that didn't wear the kilts and tartans.
Hollywood brings it to life and we revel in it because it's not in our books.
Honestly, we really don't ever get into that kind of depth of history unless we major in it as a degree of some sort. (education, research, etc)

I learned a lot about British history just by attending highland games. I talked to the Scots that came to sell their wares. They cleared up a lot of "romanticism" about their country. I was definately proud to hear them tell their stories. I can imagine how proud they were to just be able to help set the record straight.

btw, Spanish romances are awesome ;)   (d)

Well, then.  Hello there.  It's great to find an active community to discuss Celtic culture (and especially nice that it's not on EZBoard), that is active and alive.

Hope you all had a lovely holiday.  Currently listening to the celticradio.net streaming radio as I type this.  I love Scottish and Irish trad music, as well as a good deal of the contemporary music being produced.  I have a lot of other tastes in music as well, feel free to ask me about that.

What else?  I'm 29, married, have two cats (Reilly and Fatima) and am currently trying to write a novel.  I am in the U.S. and I just moved to Austin, TX (please don't hate me) from San Francisco, CA after being laid off from my job.  Come the new year, I'll have to find a real jobm, I suppose.  I sew both "modern" streets clothes and medieval and renaissance costume.  I picked up a book on Celtic designs for embroidery that I'm about to get into when I find the time.  I have also recently taken up archery, which I'm finding is absolutely the most Zen thing I have ever done.

Want to know about me?  Just feel free to ask.

Cheers,
Maibh

Allo allo everyone!  M'name is Maia, and I'm from Minnesota.  Besides being one o' the biggest mutts in the history of the world...(>.< I kid you not..name a country in europe), I am obsessed with celts, as well as irish and scottish culture.  My grandfather is 50% scottish, 50% english (odd combo, ne?).  I found that from his last name, Howell, that his clan would have been McDougall and the motto was "To Conquer or Die".  Fits my family well, actually.  And while he is not a blood relative, I do have scottish and irish in my blood, and his last name, so I've adopted the name for m'self.

My genetic breakdown is thus:

Norweigian
Swedish
German
French
Alsacian
English
Irish
Scottish
Native American (*unknown at this time if this is actually in my heritage)

So, like I said...start naming countries in Europe.  lol.

Anyhoo, pleased to meetcha!

Hello Maia! Welcome aboard! Stop on by the Pub and have a pint of wallop (b) with us!

Man, I thought being German/Irish/Scottish/Slovak was quite a combo.

I use my Scottish clan's (Maxwell) crest as my avatar. I don't know if you can read the inscription or not, but it says "Reviresco", which when translated means "I flourish again".

Posted by: Aon_Daonna 08-Jan-2003, 05:11 PM
As for the German I can go with you, also quite alot Russian and French in my blood, and there was an Irishwoman called Megan McNamara at some point.....
But that's all I know so far....

Welcome and have fun!

Welcome Maia to Highlander Radio.  So you are from the Minnesota state.  My husband worked there in the 60's and was very impressed with the fishing there.  He has always wanted to go back, but has never gotten to!  Do you ever go to the Pow-Wow's that the Indians have? I hope you enjoy the music and message board as much as I do.

I was raised by a 100% Swedish father and English, German, and Black Dutch mother. My husband has a German family name, with a French mother. His grandfather was 50% PA German & 50% German. His mother married & went to Germany to hubby's home got pg and came back to States and had the kid. His grand mother was French Canadian, Scotish, and some northern tribe.

Hello. I am new to the forums, but have been listening to Highlander Radio ever since I stumbled on it about a year ago. I live in the states (Maryland), but have Scottish blood (a few generations back) and have always loved the Highlands. Someday I would like to retire there and be a proprioter of a pub and raise cattle. I have also been facinated with the history of the whole region and the everlasting fight with England for independance. It looks like I can learn much form the information posted here. With all that said, I look forward to chatting with you and I raise my pint of stout (Guinness) to you all. (b)

BTW, I changed my signature from "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" by John Belushi (arguably the funniest line from "Animal House") to arguably the best joke and punchline from "Airplane!".

Posted by: tartangal 27-Feb-2003, 07:49 AM
I never saw ANIMAL HOUSE so I have to say that your signature had me scratching my head in puzzlement  ???  but I have to say that I really like the new one. What a belter!

Posted by: MDF3530 27-Feb-2003, 10:15 AM
You've never seen Animal House? It is the original comedy about a fraternity. Go to your local video store and RENT IT!

The John Belushi line from AH that I used to use as a quote is from this scene where the guys have been kicked out of school and he tries to raise their spirits with a well-meaning but historically inaccurate pep talk. "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" Tell me that ain't a funny line.

Posted by: tartangal 27-Feb-2003, 12:32 PM
Guess I'll just have to see it. I had picked up the German thing but I think you probably have to hear it in context ??? .

Posted by: Aon_Daonna 27-Feb-2003, 02:23 PM
Ah, Mike, I'm never too lazy to talk with my online friends, you should know that ;)
(also, sitting at the comp doesn't involve moving too much)  :p

But I was journeying through half of Europe at that time =)
