I'm expecting a Border Collie to join the family soon. I thought it would be really fun to try to teach the dog commands in Gaelic. Not only would it mystify people around us, but it would be a chance for me to start picking up words and a reason to pursue more vocabulary.
Anyone know a few words? My real worry is putting together some simple phrases; not understanding the syntax of the language, and of course the nuances.
My hope is that, by late next summer, or early next fall, that I will be able to start herding with the new fella.

I do speak to my cats in Gàidhlig, and they're getting used to it. At first they would give me rather puzzled looks. Once when I was practicing my Gàidhlig pronouncation, I was having some trouble with the dark L sound and one of my cats freaked out. His eyes got really wide and he got up and sniffed my face to make sure I was OK. I think he thought I was choking!

But speaking of dogs, Scotland has some of my favorite breeds. I love Border collies, Border terriers, Westies, and (my dream dog) Scottish deerhounds.

On a related note I have a friend that has Scottish Terriers well they used to bark at me, but one day I dropped in with my kilt on and they started licking me. After that we became fast friends. They must have been homesick for real men!

LOL! I used to dog-sit a friend's border terriers. They were great fun. The older ones were very dignified, but the young female was a pistol. They took to me right away, but I'm good usually good with dogs. I've got that "pack leader" vibe. Of course, that means nothing to my cats....
