Irish Crack!

Irish crack is slang for "conversation" found in the pubs of Ireland.

Maggie..
There is the most fantasic woman from Ireland, who has become a client of mine
Her Husband is the reason they are in Pittsburgh , he just had transplant surgurey.
UPMC draws people from all over the world for transplants..
He is healing perfectly , I am happy to report..

She was filling her days at the Salon with us, and we loved every second of it ..
This woman had never really pampered herself.. and she really learned to relax..
Not knowing a soul , and having such a gravley ill husband, we all fell in love with her..and felt blessed to spend time with her..

One day, early on.. things were not going well at all..
She came in, and was having a service with me.. she was wrung out ..
the more exausted she was , the thicker her accent ..
I have to addmit, somethings she would say, went right over my head..
I got her a cup of tea, and listened , it was all I could do..
By the time we were done, we had a few giggles.. and she said to me..
" I am so happy I have a place to come, and have a little crack"
I almost FELL off my stool !
The first thing that went thru my mind was..
" gee I thought it was ME who made her feel better"
She took one look at the expression on my face, and explained..
I still get a laugh out of thinking about that day ..

That is a good story!! By the way correct me if I'm wrong because I should be the last person to correct any spelling

But I see it spelled Craic' in the pubs that we play in. Does that make them Craic' houses

I've only ever seen it spelled 'craic'...

Yeah, 'craic' is the spelling. When my visit there was almost over, my Irish friend Donna told me how to shake up everyone when I got back to the states:

Tell them that while in Ireland I smoked a fag and had some 'crack'!

She then explained to me that it was craic, and meant good conversation. And, 'fag' is slang for a cigarette.

Speaking of Craic...
I've heard the term "the criac was ninety" in various songs and conversation before and was wondering where this came from.
I know that the expression means that the craic was really good (*ahem).
Is there an actual rating system for craic?
Any ideas on where it came from?

if yall remember i am studying in limerick at the moment i couldnt help but write something about this. all the american students always talk about how when we get home we are gonna be saying things that we would say here that just dont make sense in the us. some of my favorites are:
-craic (good craic, how's the craic)
-things are always brilliant or gorgeous
-yer man ( that is that person over there that you are talking about)
-half 9 (or whatever time you are talking about, you say this for 9 30)
-everyone ( boy or girl) are lads

there are probaly some other ones that i cant think of now cause i hear them so much that is it just natural.

I'm actually looking at studying in Limerick. The University there has a MA in Traditional Irish Performance as well as ethnomusicology.

Anything you can tell me about the city or the school?
What are you studying?
