OK, humor my ignorance, but what exactly is a Pennsic Event? It sounds cool from what you have mentioned, but I was wondering if you could tell me more about it all. Give me knowledge! I'm in the dark here. Oh, maybe it's the shades. Nope, took them off and I'm still in the dark.

If society prospers at the expense of the intangibles, how can it be called progress?
The Pennsic War , is the "battle" of the East and Middle Kingdoms in the SCA There are other wars also for other Kingdoms...
It is two weeks long.. the first week is the land grab ... where folks go to stake out their camps.. Some travel in very large households.. and of course , some locals are far more desirable than others.. Closeness to the Porta Dragons, store and showers... or by the events you want partake in. Somesay , the first week, is the REAL war
The Second week , is for battles, and classes.. there are parties EVERY night.. And Court is held, titles are given , recongnison awards.. and it is magistic ! There are classes daily, in every aspect of life in the middle ages.
Coopers Lake is a big place, even when filled with over ten thousand people. There is a lot of walking , and even for the smallest house hold, lots of preperation. There is a food court, and a mechant row that is just amazing..
Everyone is in persona every miniute of the day, and in full dress.. No one is in mundane anything. But you see everything from LLBean tents. to Panther Pavilions that are nicer than my house ! some with fans , and all the comforts of this period, but they are well hidden..
The site is very detailed, and will explain everything you could want to know There is even a FAQ section, and articles on how to plan for your very first Pennsic..
It is pure magic to be there.. it really is stepping back in time, When someone is informed , that it is your first war, They would say to you ," Welcome Home M'Lady Elspeth.."
I am sure my explaination is poor, as there is so much to know.. and so much goes on, every minute of the day .. But I hope , I at least got you into the starlight !
If there is anything else I can try , to shine some light on, please ask .. I will do my best..

Paula, Thanks for the reminder about Alexander's website--I hadn't looked at it since before Pennsic. There are some great photos there. I noticed some photos from the neighboring Barony of Delftwood, but none from the Barony of Thescorre, so will have to scan some of my own when I have a chance. I was at the Masked Ball in the barn when the fireworks started. Fortunately, there was a decent view of the fireworks from behind the barn, so I got to see most of the show. At the Thescorre baronial social meeting following Pennsic, Baron Devon, the Pennsic autocrat, gave us some of the behind-the-scenes details. Most importantly, the folks who put on the show enjoyed it enough themselves that they definitely want to do it again. There will need to be some fine-tuning. It seems that some of the burning debris from the fireworks drifted into the tent area across the road from the castle area and could have have caused some real damage were it not for quick action by some of the gentles. I suspect the next Pennsic will be here before I have a chance to look through everything on the site. Definitely worth a look for anyone with an interest in the SCA.
Excellent website. From my limited experience in Artemesia, the parties are beyond good. Since I am always in my persona as a court jester, I have great fun. My owner keeps me on a leash, but that doesn't keep me from behaving outrageosly. My character is Richard Le Chere, which means Richard the sweet. Those silly Brittish types keep getting my name wrong and misspelling it. I keeps comin out as Lecher.
