Hay, Subhuman, on a differant note, How do you even start armies??? I'm obviously missing a technology somewhere.
The first step is researching a militia- or is it archery? I forget which comes first, but it's one of those two.

I have two modes: wiseass and dumbass. Mode is determined by current blood alcohol level.
Drinking is a sport. In order to be competitive, you must practice on a regular basis. Although you can practice alone, it is much more fun to practice with friends. If you're out of shape and practice too hard, you will regret it the next day.
Life is a disease. It is sexually transmitted and always terminal.
So, if workers are not really cost efficent, and building up resources is better, what would be the advantage of have worker? short of having a minimum in the begining?
I have found that having a lot of workers trained in a skill really adds to the resources each hour. The more trained workers the more of those resources get added each turn. Having buildings likes farms or mines amplify the amount you receive. Subhuman makes a good point about the cost of training vs. the cost of a building but this comes in to play as you get up to a hundred or more trained workers.

Grateful am I to have a sword in which to defend myself at all times, blessed am I for the days I need not use it.
Getting workers has been different every time I try it...one time I get 1 worker and the next time I get over one hundred...it's like rolling the dice...you never know what will turn up..
I rolled the dice and bought 600 workers what am I going to do with 600 workers. I'll go broke feeding, clothing and sheltering them. just maybe they all have good strong backs to work in the mines, the lumber mills and farms.
I would say workers AAAAAHHHH! I decided to just throw the minimum amount of gold needed to get a couple more workers and ended up getting over 180 of the little buggers!
It would seem that there is quite the flood gate of workers coming available right now!
And here we have a strapping young lad, born on a farm, worked in the fields since a young lad. Strong muscles, good teeth, good health..... and what do I hear for this strong, young worker.......... I have 2 gold pieces, do I hear 3???????
I absolutely detest human trafficking. I use indentured servants in my kingdom. They make much better workers and at the end of their contract they have the option of working for me! What say ye'?
Dear Lord, lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that someone died for me today. And if there be war, help me to remember to ask and to answer "am I worth dying for?" - Eleanor Roosevelt
The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools. -- Herbert Spencer, English Philosopher (1820-1903)

How about instead of trafficking them we "subcontract" them out to other kingdoms who could use a larger work force? If we do it that way we'll only have to worry about having them forming unions.
im new here so this might have been asked and answered already... my understanding is that you have to have workers to build something, but you cant use the workers till the building are built? i can build wood camps and such but no buildings? thx.

Different buildings become available to build after you complete certain research and construction options under the "buildings" section (Farm, Lumber Camp, Gold Mine, and Guard Towers). As far as I know you can have 3 workers or a hundred workers and still be able to build these once you have completed the correct research.
Under the "workers" section you can train your workers to specialize in farming, mining, or being a lumberjack which should increase your total resource output depending on the number of trained workers you have.
Workers matter less in regards to constructing a building and count more to the accumulation of resources.
Hope this helps.
