I received an interesting email this past week from an individual commenting on how we pronounce ?Highlander? on the broadcast. He felt that the proper way to say Highlander is ?Highlinder.? Which does sound like how the Scottish would say it. I tried pronouncing this out loud, and my wife thought I was saying ?Hi Linda?. Needless to say I quickly stopped for fear of getting into some hot water at home!

:B

Perhaps it is that we Americans pronounce the ?a? more than others do in Canada or in Europe. Any comments on this? Would love to hear from both sides of the Atlantic!

Unfortunately my Scots dictionary doesn't have a pronounciation for any word(s) containing highland or highlander. Sorry couldn't help further.

I'm not sure how a Scots would pronounce highlander. What I would like to know, is their accent the same all over Scotland?  Here in the US we speak English but with different accents.  The way I pronounce my words is totally different from someone living in Chicago or Boston.

I'm still looking for the correct pronunciation of Highlander.  maggiemahone1

Hi Y'all,

Now I thought it was pronounced "hee-linder" that is how my friend from Inverness seems to say it.  :D

I received an email from a lady in the Highlands and she says that Highlander is pronounced as it is spelt.    maggiemahone1

My Scottish expert in Motherwell Scotland...southeast of Glasgow says"It is pronounced two ways , there is Hielander,( pronounced HEELANDER) then there is HIGHLander,
But you should be aware that the Inverness people are reputed to speak better English than the English people!!!"
