I may have missed this topic on another thread but.... has anyone else read or seen the documentary Celtic Tides: Traditional music in a New Age

I found it in my local library database. As soon as I opened it up Iknew it was going to be a winner. A brief history of the Celtic peoples is followed by a very well researched book with many[U]references by Paddy Moloney, Loreena McKennit, Cookie Rankin, Karen Matheson, Mary Jane Lamond, .......

Photos, Lyrics, stories, anecdotes, beer (just kidding), but you get the point cool.gif

It is written by Martin Melhuish and published by Quarry Music Books. Putumayo World music apparently has a series titled Celtic Tides on DVD/VHS that go along with the book.

Anyhoo I highly recommend it.

This is what was posted at her website:

This is a message from sinead. This being a very special anniversary for me, I have chosen it to announce that as of July 2003 I shall be retiring from the music business. In order to pursue a different career.
The last recordings I will make will be (believe it or not) a track for Dolly Parton's upcoming tribute album and a track for sharon Shannon's forthcoming album. These will be recorded in May.
In July I will be releasing a DVD of a live show and documentary featuring tracks from way back along with tracks fom Sean Nos Nua. The DVD will be entitled "Goodnight, thankyou. You've been a lovely audience."
And so ye have.
I wish here to thank everyone who has been a fan and or supporter of mine over the last twenty two years in the music business (first record at 14, deal at 17. Half o first album wrote when 15). As well as all the people whom I have had the honour of working with. Not least the great Dolly Parton herself!
Thanks to all of ye for a great time and a great education.
I would request that as of July, since I seek no longer to be a "famous" person, and instead I wish to live a "normal" life, could people please afford me my privacy. By which I mean I would like not to have exploition of my self or my name or anyone connected with me by newspapers.
I also mean that (with love) I want to be like any other person in the street and not have people say there is Sinead O'Connor. As I am a very shy person, believe it or not. So I ask with love, that I be left in peace and privacy by people who love my records too. And I hope it doesnt sound rude. It aint meant rude. I am glad that ye are helped by my songs. So help me too, by giving me what is best for me, a private life.
My advise to anyone who ever admires a so called "celebrity" if u see them in the street, dont even look at them. If u love them, then the lovingest thing u can do to show them so is leave them alone and don't stare at them! Or bang on restauraunt windows when they in there. Or make them get their picture taken, or write their names on bits of paper. That's pieces of them.
And one day they wake up with nothing left of themselves to give.
Love, peace, and don't 4get to pray y'all.
Sinead

Sad for us, but I can see where she would never get any peace as a "celebrity"

bye1.gif We will miss you.

Umm, something looks wrong with that link I put in there. Try cutting off everything after thistle. The site is easy to maneuver around, just look for the connections link.

Sorry.

I highly reccomend this link to NPR's "Thistle & Shamrock" radio show website. Fionna Ritchie is a great source of background info, news, interviews, and links to the websites of a host of great Celtic music.

As for good fiddle playing, try Catriona MacDonald from Shetland. Her latest cd is titled Bold and is available from compass records.

She is currently part of the "Blazin Fiddles" project. Some of the best players around right now. Although there is so much talent in the Celtic arena that I think it might be hard to say that one is better than any other.

Enjoy,

Well I guess I will add some others into the list. Karen Kasey, Mary Jane Lamond, Solas, Battlefield Band, Clannad.

Instrumental wise I absolutely love Catriona MacDonald.

Oh yeah; Leahy, Great Big Sea, and Natalie MacMaster.

It is too hard for me to pick an all time favorite. I listen to different bands depending on the mood I am in, or want to be in smile.gif

Just to throw my two cents into this topic. I saw Natalie McMaster two years ago, and as part of her show she asks if anyone is from the Maritimes. Well quite a few people spoke up and Natalie asked them where they were from. After a brief conversation, it turned out that Natalie and this one woman were distantly related.

The audience was quite amused by all of this.

I had plans to go to Celtic Colours this past year, but the military had other plans for me smile.gif Actually though, they sent me to the UK on an exchange tour, so that wasn't so bad.

Any comments on Mary Jane Lamond? She is definitely one of my favorite Celtic artists.

Long before "Mummer's Dance" was played on the airwaves, CFNY out of Toronto was Loreena McKennit. It was amazing to hear songs off of her first two cd's mixed in with all of the other great stuff CFNY played. It always made me wonder why Toronto had any other radio stations biggrin.gif

Living near the border I have probably had better access to Canadian artists than most people. Now with the advent of internet radio, the whole world can explore the incredible wealth of Canadian music. Wow, I sound like a salesman tongue.gif

Expect to see me commenting on more artists, as I explore this amazing website.

I had the good fortune to see Sinead at a small theater in Portland, Oregon USA in 1990. I just happened to be in town and I saw the marque advertising her show. On a lark I asked if they had any tickets left. As I was by myself I ended up with a second row seat. Wow, what a great expierience.

My friends in Ireland don't seem to appreciate her, but I guess that kind of voice is a dime a dozen over there. smile.gif Thanks for starting this topic.
