"Nature always wears the colors of the spirit." -
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.
K. Gibran
In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.
John Muir
"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."
I wish to remind all that this Christmas as on far to many in the past young people from both our Nations stand on guard in distant lands against hostile forces bent on destroying our way of life. I would like to tell you of a 19 year old Canadian in other war in another time. Unwanted by his parents he was sent at the age of 11 to live with his grandparents in England here 4000 miles from his home in Alberta he was educated and grew into a young man who at 18 joined the British Army Territorial (Reserve) Regiment The Essex Rifles. On Aug. 18 1939 he turned 19 and 16 days later WWII began. By the beginning of Oct. he was in Belgium in a trenchline defending the NorthEast flank of France. This was the period known as the Phony War. Christmas Eve of 1939 saw him and his Regiment standing too shivering in the cold and wet waiting for an attack that never came at least not until May of 1940 when the Germans invaded both Belgium and France. This young Canadian was Pvt. Albert Raymond McArthur, my step-father, and this was the last Christmas he would spend with his friends and Regiment. Christmas 1940 saw him now a Commando in training in Northern Scotland. Christmas 1941,1942,1943,and 1944 he would spend in Germany, a Prisoner of War. Although, like me Raymond was not religious, Christmas was alway a rough time of year for him and although he never ever spoke of it we all knew that it was a reminder of his hard youth and of all the friends and commrades he had lost. I ask that you please remember all The British, America, Canadian, and NATO troops who Stand Guard against those who would destroy us. May The Creator, or God, watch over and Protect our young Men and Women and return them Home soon Safe and Sound.
I want to wish everyone here a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and if you celebrate a comparable holiday this time of year, Happy Holiday to you.
