We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

FREEDOM ISN'T FREE


I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze
A young soldier saluted it, and then

So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert

Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?

So if you get a chance this weekend give a veteran two big hugs: One for their service and one for their brothers and sisters in arms who never got to come home to a big hug from their family or friends, because they are still on "eternal duty" rip_1.gif .

MacE, I sure wish my Dad was still here on this earth so I could give him two big hugs! I love Memorial day and what it represents, but it's such a sad day when you go visit the graves of loved ones and all you have left of them is your memories.

BTW..that poem was a tear jerker! sad.gif

On a lighter note, I hope everyone has a safe and Happy Memorial Day! It's great to be able to be wth family and friends and eat, play and have a good time!

I must confess that I never served in the military, nor have I lost any loved ones to war, but I am thankful for those who chose to sacrifice their time and - in many cases - their lives to guarantee us our way of life.

To all of our vets - both living and dead - Thank you! You will not be forgotten!

Hope you all have a wonderful, safe holiday!

I will be celebrating Memorial Day somewhat. Since my husband is not at home - I can't give him a hug. But I hope he has a chance to call me or be online.

I know I will be thinking about him very much. I got the balcony decorated and will do a bit more decorating. The door is already framed with green Ivy in wich are yellow ribbons tied. And I got a few of those car magnets on the frontdoor wich are yellow ribbons.

As is my custom every Memorial Day, I would like to pay tribute to my fellow "Silent Warriors," especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice while flying "peacetime" aerial reconnaissance missions in a "Silent War" that even today few are even aware was taking place. The families of one crew had to wait 39 years before they were honored with a memorial service, and the families were finally allowed to talk to those who had served in the same squadron as the crew.

My thoughts and prayers are with those men and women, and their familes, who are now fighting the war on terror so the the rest of us can enjoy the holiday as we choose, whether it is in solemn commemoration of the sacrifices so many have made, or a celebration of the beginning of summer.

Just wondering what everyone will be doing on Memorial Day?

I may go to either a baseball game or the local Irish Fest.
