This looks like it should be a fun event. I notice that Christina Harrison, whose album I play on a regular basis, is one of the featured entertainers, and that Clan Donald USA is heavily involved. It may even be within driving distance for me. How far from Pennsic is the site?

I'd LOVE to come (as you know) but September is a busy month for us. I'll have to wait until closer to the date to see. Love those Laurel Highlands.

Sounds like fun, A-rhod. The big festival on my side of the state is Celtic Classic, in Bethlehem, PA, and is two weeks after Ligonier. Looks like September will be a banner month!

I would say about 120 miles one way from Coopers lake..
I have to look at a map.. Ligoner is not far from the turnpike..
so that "may" shave off a few miles..
BUT you know the PA Turnpike.. if anything.. it takes you OUT of the way !
It would be well worth the trip !
The games take place in a charming old amusment park..
that is closed for the season..lovey place.

Elspeth.. I hope you can make it..
we have talked about this since we met ..

Eamon, please call me Paula..
all of my friends do..
I heard about the Celtic Classic right here on CR..
sounds like my kind of Event!
September is allways a banner month for me..
The greatest day of the year falls on Sept 8th..

In Service to the Dream,
Paula

Hmmmm... Does someone perchance have a birthday on the 8th? I'm thinking a belated birthday celebration would be in order. Now if only my kids didn't have 18 things going on that time of year..... Darn kids....

Since my very favorite Celtic group, Iona, is playing, I should try to get there! Where's the best place to stay? Is there a campground nearby? What's the weather like that time of year? With this much lead time, it might be possible! biggrin.gif

We went to check out the Celtic Classic in 2002. What a fantastic festival. We are planning on applying to set up there in 2005. The only problem is that whenever we set up, we miss a lot of the bands and the Celtic Classic always has a great line-up

And Sister Squash, I can personally vouch for the hotel in Ligoneer. We've stayed there several times. smile.gif And there are several other fine ones in the area as well.
OK, Paula, now you're getting me wanting to go to this thing.

I haven't been to Ligonier in about 20 years. I've been there several times competing with the pipe band. It used to attract some of the better bands from Ontario and the east coast. Do they still have the big pipe band competition?

Cheers!

Elspeth..
Plan Plan ! come on ! *waves from the picnic table*

Todd ..
Last year they had the most Pipe bands EVER ..
it was awesome to hear !
With that canopy of trees over the piping area..
the sound was just .. it went THRU you ...

The Games allways bring a lot of bands..
and it seems to grow each year..

Last year.. some lady was in the middle of the practice area..
TRYING to talk on her cell phone.. I laughed all day ...

I think they had , I maybe wrong, but I thougt someone said
they had over 100 bands last year,, let me check the book ..
bah no listing..
Lots and lots of Solos too ..
and a lot more women piping then I have ever seen in the past..

I do know that the Pgh Police Pipes , were not there..
they are just fantastic.. but they had a funeral to play ..

Its just a great week end..in a very pretty place..

Paula

greensburg and Latrobe are both relatively close for hotels, foods, etc. Most of the places to stay are around $50-$60 per room per night... weather has typically been hot, humid and lots of sunshine.

Except for last year, I've been going there for the past 5 years. I will be there for my daughter 1st highland games. Although my wife may not as she is expecting.

In relation to the enterntainment, I know they are great to listen too.

I won't be having my usual purple/gold EZmemories CD booth there, but I may wear my purple shirt with gold lettering (EZALUMNI.COM) shirt.

who knows... but if anyone sees me, let me know your from Highland Radio.

Before I forget, everything you need is off of Route 30 close to Westmoreland Mall.

If anyone needs directions or whatever, let me know via Email
