In ancient times Ireland was divided into provinces ruled by a King. These provinces were dynamic and their borders changed all the time. Today when the Irish talk about the provinces of Ireland they mean Leinster, Ulster, Munster and Connaught.

Here is a list of counties in these 4 Provinces.

Leinster- Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offlay, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.

Connaught-Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo

Munster-Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary

Ulster-(Republic of Ireland) Cavan, Donegal and Managhan
(Northern Ireland part) Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonerry and Tyrone

A good starting point for the history of Ancient Uladh (Ulster) is found at:
Uladh.

A very good site with loads of info, thanks a lot Mailagnas. There's a good source of old Irish surnames that is very interesting. I recommend it highly to anyone who is interested in their Irish genealogy.
