I posted this first in Rememberance Day/Veterans but reworked it , I hope for the better.

He came from
Out of nowhere
A Spectre in the dusk
The Battle Dress he wore
Was tattered, torn
And frayed
The mud smeared Kilt
It's Tartan lost
Beneath the dirt and blood
Swayed in rhythm with
Each step of his
Boot shod feet
The bulging pack
Upon his back
Was sixty pounds
At least
And on his head
His Tommy Hat
Scarred and dented in
Sat low across the forehead
Shading the face within
At the port his Enfield
Carried, bayonet tip agleam
The hobs struck sparks
On Coble stones, his body
Forward leaned
On down the road
He trod from sight
Fading in the mist
And on that road
Just down the way
A Cemetery is
And to one stone
Amongst the rest
A muddy track did lead
And on that stone
A Maple Leaf with
Words inscribed below
"A Soldier of The Great War"
Here lies a gallant soul.

"LEST WE FORGET"

Camac this is a very touching tribute to the scottish soldier.
One can close eyes and see the spectre walk in the mist in all his glory.
As I read your poem I'm listening to a CD and the tune that's playing is call "The Mist covered mountains"...oddly appropriate for your poem.

Thank you my dear friend, keep writing for my eyes to read.
